Today, on October 20th (Sunday), my wife and I resumed our "Saigoku Sanjusan Kannon Pilgrimage" which we had previously paused, and headed towards the 21st temple, Anata-ji in Kameoka. Before that, we decided to grab a bite to eat. We took Route 46 from Ibaraki into Kameoka City and turned left at the Higashikake intersection, about 200m down the side road. It took us about 30 minutes by car from Takatsuki to reach this old farmhouse nestled in the mountains surrounded by rice fields.
When we arrived a little after the opening time of 11 am, we were lucky to find the last parking spot available. As we got out of the car, we could hear the sound of a nearby stream and felt a slight chill in the air. The restaurant itself was a renovated old farmhouse, with about 10 traditional Japanese tables. It was almost full, but we were seated without having to wait. The elderly couple who ran the place were busy but kind. We ordered the "Tempura Set Meal" for 1700 yen, which included soba noodles, assorted tempura, rice cooked in a pot with burnt edges, rolled omelette, sesame-dressed green beans, shredded dried persimmon with Japanese pepper, and pickled vegetables.
We enjoyed a leisurely cup of tea while waiting for our food. The soba noodles were thin and soft, with a delicious aroma and a great texture. The burnt rice had a sticky texture, and the shredded dried persimmon with Japanese pepper went well with it. The tempura was freshly fried and crispy, especially when dipped in matcha salt. My wife particularly praised the tempura. The meal was simple yet flavorful, and we left feeling satisfied. Unfortunately, the "shredded dried persimmon with Japanese pepper" was sold out when we tried to buy it as a souvenir.
When it was time to pay around 12:10 pm, the couple running the restaurant seemed busy, so we stacked our empty dishes to help them out. They thanked us sincerely, which put us in a good mood. As we were leaving, we overheard the couple apologizing to new customers that the soba noodles were already sold out. My wife really enjoyed the soba noodles, rice, shredded dried persimmon with Japanese pepper, and tempura, and even mentioned wanting to recommend the restaurant to her friends. It might be a good idea to make a reservation in advance, as the soba noodles tend to sell out quickly, even on weekends and holidays.
