There aren't many Western-style pastry shops in my neighborhood. The only ones on my way home are chain stores. There are some individual shops, but they are usually closed because they sell out quickly. I wanted something sweet on my way back home. Since there weren't many options in the shopping street, I decided to try a place a bit further away... It's located along the Taketa Highway. It's a traditional Japanese sweets shop called Surugaya. Although I've heard the name in various places, there are two shops nearby in Fushimi, but this one is different. It's a small individual shop. I decided to start by buying some Japanese sweets, but to my surprise, they also had Western-style pastries! They had recently started offering them. I purchased a few different Japanese sweets to try them out. Here is the lineup for January. There were various options, and after much deliberation, I bought three different kinds over two visits. And they were delicious. They had a subtle sweetness that slowly grew on you, not too overwhelming. A gentle taste that made you want more. I also bought some yokan as a gift for someone, and it turned out to be quite popular. The person I gave it to was very happy and enjoyed it. Later on, I decided to try their Western-style pastries as well. I made multiple visits to purchase them. First, I tried the shortcake. A simple dessert where the taste is key. It was delicious. It made me question if this was really a Japanese sweets shop. On my second visit, my husband and I decided to enjoy some pastries together. I got a chocolate cake for him and a roll cake for myself. They were both delicious. The sponge was fluffy, and the amount of fruits was just right. The chocolate cake wasn't overly sweet and was well-crafted. On my third visit, I bought a roll cake as a gift for a dinner party I was invited to. It was a roll cake in the form of a whole cake. It had choux pastry on top, which made it a bit tricky to cut, but my friends loved it. They had also been thinking about the lack of Western-style pastries in the neighborhood. It may seem odd to have both Japanese and Western sweets at a traditional Japanese sweets shop, but it's nice to have the option to choose based on your mood when you want something sweet. They have a slightly limited selection due to being an individual shop that makes everything in-house, but it's a great place to satisfy your craving for delicious sweets. Sometimes, it may not be convenient to stop by after work, or they may have extended hours, but it's worth the gamble. The very friendly staff make the experience enjoyable, and you can ask them anything. Since then, my husband has gone there a few times, and I have also made some purchases myself. By the way, I received a cake from here for White Day. They also offer their products for online purchase, but they have seasonal items, so visiting the store is the best option.
