While on a sake brewery tour and craving something sweet, I happened to come across this place. Here are some details about the shop: - Originated from the main house of Surugaya - Fushimi Honpo has always stuck to handmade by craftsmen, continuing the traditional manufacturing method and tradition since its founding Items on the menu include: - Sakura Mochi: ¥200 - Strawberry Daifuku: ¥320 - Mikasa: ¥270 I wanted something sweet and found this place with good ratings on Google Maps. There are only 2 seats available for eating in, where you can enjoy seasonal limited edition Japanese sweets. Although I was surprised by the prices, the taste and the warmth of the handmade sweets without unnecessary additives made it worth it. The atmosphere of the shop has an old-fashioned charm, making it a great place to find gifts. A little tip: The shop is run by two people, so once something sells out, it's uncertain when it will be available again. I purchased their signature item "Yoru no Ume" to take home.

The entrance of this shop faces south. They have also set up a window on the west side where they sell freshly baked dumplings. I tried Mitarashi dango for the first time and it was soft and delicious. Maybe it's difficult to sell it at the same window as tea snacks. Long ago, you could see the streetcar passing by from here. Over 50 years ago. Come to think of it, a few years ago, the two Danbayas in this town also disappeared.

Located at the corner of Otemasunishi Street and Taketa Highway, this is a long-established store with a history of 240 years. While there are many stores with the Surugaya name, this is the only one under this particular business. The last time I had these traditional sweets was when I received them as souvenirs from a friend in Fushimi when I was a child. Probably about 40 years ago... This time, I bought these sweets for a snack at home. After placing the order, they filled the sweets with sweet bean paste. The skin was a bit firm but had a nice crispy texture. The sweetness of the bean paste was just right and to my liking. Although it's been a while since I had them, the wrapping paper brought back nostalgic memories. They were very accommodating even for a small purchase. Thank you for the delicious treat!

This shop is facing the Taketa Highway, and it seems that the first tram stop in Japan was located just to the west. The shop, founded in the 1700s, apparently gave up its land for the tram stop. The tram used to run from Shio-Koji Takakura in the north of Kyoto Station, crossing over the JR tracks to Keihan Kyobashi in Fushimi. The current owner of the shop is quite young, but it seems they came up with this senbei to capitalize on this story. The senbei is a light rice cracker with a sweet topping, maybe with a yuzu flavor. It's a bit pricey at 300 yen for a pack of 6 pieces. The sweet treat, with a round red bean paste surrounded by cool kudzu, is wrapped in a transparent leaf. It seems like a new twist. It was delicious.

I visited this traditional Japanese confectionery shop during early April, the cherry blossom season. It is located along the Fushimi Tanden Road in Fushimi and has a history of over 200 years. I bought some sake manju (steamed buns with sake filling) from this shop. However, it seems that their specialty is yokan (sweet bean jelly). There is also a monument in front of the shop commemorating the opening of Japan's first electric train line from this spot to Kyoto Station.

I hadn't reviewed for a while. I stopped by thinking about spring sweets. Perhaps because it was the weekend, I was mistaken for a tourist. The rape blossoms had grated yam on top, providing a soft texture. This shop faces the Takeda Highway, but until 1970, there used to be a streetcar running through here. It opened in 1895, lasting a human lifetime. When the line was closed, a monument was erected by the Railway Enthusiasts' Society, marking this as the birthplace of electric railway operations in our country. The pamphlet I received this time includes senbei named after the tramway. The generation that has seen Kyoto's streetcars is dwindling, but I hope everyone can reflect on the past. Now, cherry blossom season is coming soon. I might buy some three-colored dumplings and eat them on the bridge in Kyobashi.

I visited the store because they also have Western sweets, but the selection was limited, so I ended up buying both Japanese and Western sweets. I purchased Japanese sweets and yokan. The Japanese sweets have a woody aroma.

Get off at Momoyama Goryomae Station, turn left at the end of the Otemichi shopping street, then turn right at the small shopping street until you reach the traffic light, and there it is. When you open the glass sliding door with a nostalgic appearance of an old Kyoto townhouse, you might think it's just another traditional Japanese confectionery shop in a shopping street. But what stands out the most is the strawberry daifuku. The strawberries here are specially sourced from a trusted supplier and are not something you can find just anywhere. It's hard to describe this product, but one thing is for sure - it's not something that can be made overnight. Even an amateur can see the meticulous calculation and craftsmanship that has gone into this palm-sized Japanese dessert. This is a product that embodies the history of Sunshokai. It will likely be a staple on their menu in the upcoming season, but be prepared for it to sell out quickly. I've found something truly special. By the way, I heard that the owner is also a confectionery lecturer at a university. Those in the know will understand.

I visited last year at the beginning of the year as well. At that time, you could only reserve the Hanabiramochi. This year, when I passed by the store, I saw a sign saying "Hanabiramochi". It seems to be popular. I went inside the store, but it was a bit hard to find as it was displayed in a small corner. It costs 420 or 450 yen excluding tax. Seems a bit expensive. I bought one and tried it at home. The burdock was ordinary. The red bean paste part was big. It had a salty taste. The chewy texture of the skin balanced well with the filling. Well, it's a seasonal item. Let's live on in this town this year as well.

There aren't many Western-style pastry shops in my neighborhood. The only ones on my way home are chain stores. There are some individual shops, but they are usually closed because they sell out quickly. I wanted something sweet on my way back home. Since there weren't many options in the shopping street, I decided to try a place a bit further away... It's located along the Taketa Highway. It's a traditional Japanese sweets shop called Surugaya. Although I've heard the name in various places, there are two shops nearby in Fushimi, but this one is different. It's a small individual shop. I decided to start by buying some Japanese sweets, but to my surprise, they also had Western-style pastries! They had recently started offering them. I purchased a few different Japanese sweets to try them out. Here is the lineup for January. There were various options, and after much deliberation, I bought three different kinds over two visits. And they were delicious. They had a subtle sweetness that slowly grew on you, not too overwhelming. A gentle taste that made you want more. I also bought some yokan as a gift for someone, and it turned out to be quite popular. The person I gave it to was very happy and enjoyed it. Later on, I decided to try their Western-style pastries as well. I made multiple visits to purchase them. First, I tried the shortcake. A simple dessert where the taste is key. It was delicious. It made me question if this was really a Japanese sweets shop. On my second visit, my husband and I decided to enjoy some pastries together. I got a chocolate cake for him and a roll cake for myself. They were both delicious. The sponge was fluffy, and the amount of fruits was just right. The chocolate cake wasn't overly sweet and was well-crafted. On my third visit, I bought a roll cake as a gift for a dinner party I was invited to. It was a roll cake in the form of a whole cake. It had choux pastry on top, which made it a bit tricky to cut, but my friends loved it. They had also been thinking about the lack of Western-style pastries in the neighborhood. It may seem odd to have both Japanese and Western sweets at a traditional Japanese sweets shop, but it's nice to have the option to choose based on your mood when you want something sweet. They have a slightly limited selection due to being an individual shop that makes everything in-house, but it's a great place to satisfy your craving for delicious sweets. Sometimes, it may not be convenient to stop by after work, or they may have extended hours, but it's worth the gamble. The very friendly staff make the experience enjoyable, and you can ask them anything. Since then, my husband has gone there a few times, and I have also made some purchases myself. By the way, I received a cake from here for White Day. They also offer their products for online purchase, but they have seasonal items, so visiting the store is the best option.

When I went to a funeral, I received various gifts, and among them, there was a small but heavy package. When I unwrapped it, I found a splendid wooden box. Upon opening it, I discovered bite-sized yokan in various flavors neatly packed in the box. The four flavors were plum, green tea, chestnut, and plain. Each flavor had an elegant sweetness with its own unique character, and they were all delicious. Personally, I preferred the chestnut and plain flavors. I couldn't resist taking some home with me when I saw that there were leftovers at my parents' house. Thank you for the treat.

After about a year and a half, I decided to ride my road bike back home from my parents' house in Matsubara City to my home in Kyoto City. Instead of just riding on the national highway, I wanted to make it more interesting, so I cycled from the starting point of the Keihan Road at Koreibashi in Kitahama to the endpoint in Kyomachi, Otsu City. During my cycling trip, I happened to come across this shop. While exploring, I found a monument saying "The birthplace of electric railway business in our country." I was surprised to learn that this place was the origin of trains in Japan. But my attention was quickly drawn to the sign of "Surugaya Pudding" next to it. I always crave something sweet when I'm tired, so I decided to order the "Surugaya Pudding" that was advertised on the sign and eat it outside the shop. Even though it was originally a take-out shop, they allowed me to eat it there. I ordered just one item, which cost only 230 yen, but they even prepared a warm tea for me. According to the sign, you can sprinkle the included small bag of wasanbon sugar on top, but as a sweet tooth, I poured all of it. The collaboration of egg, vanilla beans, and wasanbon sugar created a delicious taste! I usually only eat convenience store puddings, so the taste and texture were completely different. I'm not sure what a delicious pudding is supposed to taste like, but for me, it was a very satisfying flavor.

Located a 5-minute walk from Fushimi-Momoyama Station or Nakashojima Station on the Keihan Line, Fushimi is a district known for its sake breweries. Among them is the charming Fushimi Shunzaiya, a traditional confectionery shop with a long history. Stepping inside, you are greeted by a friendly woman who offers a wide selection of sweets, including the famous yokan, wagashi, and baked goods. This shop is a branch that split off from the main Shunzaiya family in the late Edo period and has been independently developing its own unique recipes ever since. The 11th generation owner kindly explained that they still make the sweets in the back of the shop. I purchased four items to go. - Refined Yokan "Night Plum" (520 yen): A small red bean yokan named after a plum floating in the night. It is sweet but not overly so, with a natural sweetness from wasanbon sugar. A delicious traditional treat. - Matcha Dango (150 yen per skewer): A chewy, lightly sweet mochi with a hint of matcha flavor. - Sasayui (190 yen): Unravel the bamboo leaf to find a daifuku with sweet bean paste inside. The sweetness is just right. - Ajirogi (170 yen): A castella cake with yuzu-flavored bean paste and sugar on top. Sweet and fluffy, a unique treat only available here. In addition to these, they also offer Western-style sweets made by a pastry chef. Next to the shop, there is a monument marking the birthplace of the electric railway, as there used to be a tram station nearby. This shop is conveniently located near the popular restaurant Tsujimasa and is a great stop during a stroll through Fushimi. A kind and honest establishment.

Although located outside of Kyoto, I believe that the status of being the birthplace of yokan is very high. I heard about it on a TV show and decided to check it out as a fan of popular places. I couldn't get my hands on the steamed yokan, which is only available by reservation, but I tried the red bean and chestnut yokan from Fushimi Yokan. It had a simple and elegant taste without being too overwhelming. I didn't ask directly, but it seems like there is a small eating area where you can stop by and enjoy your yokan right away. Since it's relatively close by and has both popularity and quality, I would definitely like to visit this shop again.

Sunpu-ya is a traditional Japanese confectionery shop located in Fushimi. It is a branch that split off from the main store 230 years ago. They offer a variety of delicious traditional Japanese sweets, with a focus on fresh confections. Some popular items include "Hanabiramochi," "Shichikiri," "Kashiwamochi," and "Minazuki." Their "Imo Manju" and "Yamaduto" are particularly recommended. The cost performance of their sweets is considered good, with reasonable prices and decent portion sizes. Recently, they have also started offering Western-style confections. Overall, the quality of their sweets has improved, but some of the traditional charm may have been lost.
