Originally a liquor store called "Ueda Saketen." Of course, they still operate as a liquor store, but they also have a restaurant called Owamaya attached to it. The exterior retains the old liquor store look, giving off a nice Showa era atmosphere. To enter the restaurant, you pass through the liquor store, take off your shoes, and change into slippers before going upstairs. It has a welcoming atmosphere where you feel like saying, "Excuse me, I'm coming in." Inside the restaurant, you can order glass wine or soft drinks, or choose a favorite bottle from the liquor store. They have a wide selection of drinks, from sake and shochu to wine and champagne. The wine selection is extensive, and the owner's wife provides helpful advice. We chose a red Burgundy wine and enjoyed various dishes to accompany it. The menu consists of both French and Italian cuisine. For those with a big appetite, there is a variety of pasta dishes available. They even offer unique items like raw liver sashimi, which could be a great match with shochu as a snack. There is also a counter near the entrance where you can chat with the chef while enjoying your drink, making it a great spot for solo diners. The restaurant cleverly utilizes the triangular shape of the land, providing a view of a garden-like space from inside. Being a fan of red wine and cheese pairings, I couldn't resist ordering the cheese platter (small) for ¥800. The four types of cheese were all flavorful and paired perfectly with the red wine. I also tried the rillette (¥700), scallops with green peas in a white wine sauce (¥800), and hormone in white wine and blue cheese sauce (¥700). Each dish complemented the wine well, and I savored every last bit of sauce with the bread provided. There were many more dishes I wanted to try, but my stomach was full, so I had to give up. Although a bit away from Kyoto's central area, it's right in front of Shugakuin Station, making it worth a visit even if you have to go out of your way.
