It was very delicious. It was a shame that I couldn't eat the pike conger because the kaiseki meal had ended. The air conditioning was working well and it was a little cold. It was past 2 o'clock, so there were few other customers and we were able to enjoy our meal slowly. Thank you for the meal.

Having lunch around Kyoto Station. I was hesitating as it was a busy time and didn't know where to go. I felt like eating something Kyoto-style, but I didn't want to wait in line. So, I decided to go to Tankuma Kitamise located in Chuo Shijo-cho. The service was impeccable and the food was delicious. It was a reliable restaurant that did not disappoint.

I tried making a reservation online for a family meal at a restaurant. I chose the course menu "Wakamurasaki" for 6,000 yen. It was my first time using this restaurant, but a woman in traditional Japanese clothing guided us to our seats where the appetizer was already served. I was relieved that the online reservation went through smoothly. With some hot sake, we enjoyed sashimi, steamed clam soup, tempura, turnip dish, simmered fish, rice, and more at a leisurely pace. The food was delicious. The restaurant had a lot of older customers, but it didn't feel too formal and we were able to enjoy our meal comfortably.

I came to Kyoto on February 9, 2014, and wanted to eat proper Kyoto cuisine. We didn't have a reservation, so we went to the restaurant area in Takashimaya. We ended up at Tankuma. At first, we were seated at a regular table, but when we ordered the course menu, we were moved to a semi-private room. We enjoyed the meal while drinking.

It's Takashimaya. You can enter with peace of mind. From the reservation perspective, it's during a weekday lunch, so maybe about 2/3 full. It won't be completely full, but there's a decent amount of people coming in and out at different times. It's located in a privileged area within Takashimaya's dining area.

Seasonal Japanese flavors abound. The matsutake mushroom, conger eel, and ginkgo nut chawanmushi were particularly delicious. The spacious interior exudes a calm atmosphere, with solo diners scattered about. I find the Takashimaya location to be casual and pleasant.

I wanted to eat oyakodon after a long time, but the price was a whopping 1700 yen! The taste was also different from before, so I'm really sad about it...

I have been coming here since the parent and child bowl with a yolk on top was 600 yen, but recently it seems like the chef has changed because the way they cut the green onions is different, which is really disappointing. If they go back to how it was before, I would like to come back again. In that case, I would rate it 4.9.

I visited Kinkakuji and Ryoanji, and found myself with some unexpected free time. I decided to move up my reservation and was promptly seated at my reserved table. The staff greeted me warmly, thanking me for my reservation. I ordered the Snow Gozen, but had to wait a bit for it to be served. In the meantime, I enjoyed some warm sake, which was perfect for passing the time. The beautifully presented dishes were a delight to photograph, almost too beautiful to eat. But I did eat them, and they were delicious. The sashimi was fresh and tasty, and the tempura was crispy and hot. It paired perfectly with the warm sake. I considered getting a refill, but decided against it as I was heading back to Kansai Airport. Instead, I opted for some tea. Thank you for the wonderful meal.

I went to Tan Kumasan on the 7th floor restaurant floor of Takashimaya, which offers all-day service. I tried their Oyakodon (1080 yen), which comes with miso soup and pickles for this price. Despite being in a department store, Tan Kumasan is surprisingly affordable. The Oyakodon had plenty of tender chicken and the eggs were perfectly half-cooked, with a gentle dashi flavor. It was delicious. The Kino-ha Don, priced at 864 yen, is also a great value. Overall, I am satisfied with the quality and prices at Tan Kumasan.

The banquet course "Matsukaze" for 7000 yen (I think) was nothing special, just average dishes that you might find at a slightly better izakaya. They didn't serve ara-zukuri as part of the course, which could have been offered as an a la carte option or as part of a set meal. The rice was cooked nicely (although the ginger was too big). The staff seemed like they could use better training, as they were not very attentive. Is this really "Tankuma" or is this the level they are at? It might be better suited for a place to go for set meals or rice bowls rather than a banquet restaurant.

On weekends, the 7th floor of Kyoto Takashimaya is crowded, but the original Tanukuma on the other hand is relatively quiet. The customers are mostly elderly. The donburi dishes are quite reasonably priced. This time, I had a set of oyakodon and tempura, which also came with chawanmushi and a small side dish. The oyakodon was unexpectedly delicious, with large but tender pieces of meat. The rice portion was a bit small, but overall satisfying. The tempura, especially the vegetable tempura, was crispy and freshly fried. The chawanmushi had a good dashi flavor and was delicious. It's a hidden gem and highly recommended.

(Visit in May 2015) After having breakfast, I returned to my accommodation and checked the location of the restaurant I had reserved for dinner in the evening in Gion Shijo. The area was still crowded, especially with an increasing number of foreign tourists. It seemed like the popularity of this tourist spot was unshakable. I had planned to go to the restaurant Kanemasu after confirming its location, but couldn't find it. It was also hot, not scorching but still uncomfortable. When I finally found the restaurant and went there, there was already a long line. It seems like I still have a lot to learn. So, to cool off, I visited the restaurant area inside Takashimaya, which was relatively less crowded compared to before. I ordered the Sea Bream Tea Set, which included tempura, chawanmushi, sea bream tea, pickles, and a side dish (minced fish with wasabi). It was different from the sea bream tea I had at Kichi-Cho before, more like a sesame paste than a sesame dressing. It was okay, not great. It might be a good option to keep in mind when you're unsure where to eat.

This is a restaurant located on the 7th floor of Takashimaya Kyoto, and it is also a branch of the famous Tanukuma restaurant featured in the Michelin guide. I visited on a Saturday morning and the seating was not too crowded, so I was seated right away. There were various set menus available, but I chose the Kinoha set this time. The food arrived quickly, except for the tempura which took a bit longer as they fry it upon order. Everything tasted decently good, but in terms of cost-performance for lunch, it was just average. The clientele seemed to be mostly elderly, and younger people or families seemed to prefer cheaper options at other restaurants. It's easy to get a feel for the atmosphere of Tanukuma here, so it might be worth a visit for that reason.
