Since the days when it was still Saffontei, I had always thought, "I'll go there someday," but now it has become an Italian restaurant. I decided to visit for lunch on a holiday. It's located a little north of the Shirakawa River along Kitaoji. The entrance and the plants along the riverbank create a lovely atmosphere, with occasional passing of the Eizan Electric Railway. The nearby railroad crossing doesn't make too much noise. It's a location that makes you want to linger for a while.
For lunch, there are four options. Since I was quite hungry, I chose Option B: Appetizer, Pasta, Bread, and Drink for 1200 yen, and Option C: Appetizer, Main Course, Bread, and Drink for 1600 yen. You can choose from around four options for each course in a prix-fixe style. When the appetizer arrived, it was surprisingly generous, and I couldn't help but ask, "Is this a single portion?" Lunch appetizers are often small, like play food, but this one is so luxurious that it could easily be a 1000 yen lunch just with the bread! The grilled mackerel with herbs was delicious and plump, though the herb aroma was subtle. The carpaccio had no fishy smell, and the generous salad was a nice touch.
Next came the pasta, which had a nice volume that could stand alone as a dish (it's hard to tell from the photo, but the plate has depth). It wasn't too heavy, and the sweetness of the dried tomatoes stood out. The grilled lamb had a unique accompaniment of grilled vegetables like radish, and the presentation was gorgeous. To my delight, there were about five slices of lamb, and the meat was slightly firm but juicy when cut with a knife. It was a joy to eat plenty of lamb for lunch!
While waiting, I noticed that many dishes on the dinner menu were also available for lunch. When asked, the staff confirmed that they serve almost the same amount and content for lunch. For reference, the carpaccio I chose for the appetizer was 800 yen, and the grilled lamb was over 1000 yen, so the lunch set is quite a good deal!
The portions are quite large, so the dinner menu with a variety of dishes would be enjoyable as well. However, the service was a bit slow as pointed out by others before. Even though we were the only customers at the time, it was still noticeable. I didn't notice, but there is a notice that "Café use is not allowed." If you enter alone without a book, you might end up feeling quite bored. It would be nice to have a few flyers or stylish magazines available... Since they seem to not want to be seen as a café, it's hard to expect much in that regard.
We arrived towards the end of the lunch hours, and after finishing serving us, the chef or someone similar left the restaurant without even a glance towards us, which felt a bit too indifferent... While the female staff was nice, the lack of effort to create a comfortable atmosphere was disappointing.
