After visiting the Byodoin Temple, I stopped by this shop in Uji which is known for selling traditional sweets like matcha dango. The shop was located along a street not far from the group parking lot of the temple. Inside, there were boxes of matcha dango stacked up, along with other Uji specialties like matcha senbei, matcha yokan, and candies. I bought a small box of 32 pieces of matcha dango for 600 yen, which had a shelf life of about three days. When I opened the box at home, the dango were small and round, with a nice chewy texture and a balanced sweetness. The matcha flavor was not too strong, without any bitterness. Even my husband, who usually doesn't like strong matcha flavors, enjoyed them. The size of the dango was quite small, so if you're looking to buy them as souvenirs for a large group, you might want to consider getting a larger box. Overall, I recommend trying these matcha dango as a souvenir when visiting Uji, along with their famous green tea.

During my student days, when I was working part-time in Uji, I was recommended to go to this shop to buy "chadango". The chadango here is not skewered, but each piece is individually served. I bought a 32-piece set for 600 yen. The slightly sweet and chewy dango is so addictive once you start eating it. While it may not be outstanding, you can definitely tell that this shop is loved by the locals.

Since it's not on a stick, you can't walk and eat it. It's soft and the matcha flavor is subtle. It's far from the station, but delicious.

This shop is located in front of the Kehi Shrine, the guardian deity of Byodoin Temple. Uji's specialty tea dumplings are sold at several shops, and Nakamura Kashiho is also a long-established store with a history! I used to eat them a lot when I was a child, but I received them as a souvenir after a long time. The dumplings are handmade, soft, and each one is rolled by hand. The matcha is slightly mild in flavor. They are small and easy to eat, so you might find yourself popping them into your mouth one after another! They may not be fancy, but these simple and flavorful dumplings are delicious! Thank you for the meal! (2017.8.21)

In front of Agata Shrine, there is a dumpling shop. The appearance of the shop is a bit questionable, but when you go inside, they have dumplings and sweet bean jelly. You can get 60 dumplings for only 750 yen, which is super cheap. They don't come with skewers and they are additive-free, so they don't last long, but they are incredibly delicious!

I was running towards Byodo-in Temple when I stumbled upon this shop! The simple appearance of the shop caught my attention more than the commercialized ones. On my way back, I bought 40 pieces of tea dumplings for 600 yen. The service at the shop was normal, but they kept saying "thank you" multiple times, even though I only bought one box, which made me feel grateful. At home, I enjoyed the tea dumplings with hot green tea. Each dumpling had a different shape, maybe because they were hand-rolled? I'm not sure since there was no information provided. Whether sprinkled with soy sauce, kinako, or anko, the taste of the dumplings was enjoyable. I haven't tried dumplings from other shops, but I was completely satisfied with this treat!

This is a dumpling shop located near or in front of Agata Shrine in Uji. When it comes to dumplings in Uji, you have to try the matcha dumplings. The flavor is rich and the price is reasonable. It's a shame that they don't last long, but they make a great souvenir to bring back home. While dumplings are the main attraction, they also sell yokan (sweet bean jelly).
