[Yamaguchi → Kyoto San'in Crossing Tour Food Walk 28]
After leaving 'Michi no Eki Amaru-be,' we continued driving east. The place we planned to stay in Kyoto was not a hotel with online reservations, but a guesthouse that only accepts reservations by phone. It was recommended by the owner of a local shop and the proprietress of 'Honana,' who is from Kyoto's Kyotango. The guesthouse is called 'Kurozaki-so,' and I arrived just in time for dinner around 6:00 PM. I was the only guest staying that night. Located just a few minutes' walk from the northern end of Amanohashidate, the guesthouse is right by the sea, so most guests seem to be fishermen. Since I was traveling on a weekday, there were no other guests. Despite the typical image of a 'guesthouse' being old and run-down, this guesthouse is very clean, bright, and comfortable, with both the main building and annex being well-maintained. After resting in the room for a while, I had dinner at the dining area in the main building. The dining area was spacious, bright, and clean.
- Menu
Dinner was included in the accommodation fee, so I only ordered drinks.
● Bottle of beer (large)
A toast to the journey. Since I didn't do much food walking that day, this beer tasted exceptionally good.
● Dinner course
- Appetizer
- First course: Shiitake and cucumber salad, Abalone matsumae-zuke, raw wheat gluten, taro, shrimp
- Grilled dish: Grilled Pacific saury with fried bones
- Sashimi: Assorted sashimi including shrimp and squid
- Tempura: Shrimp, shishito pepper, shiitake mushroom, pumpkin
- Chawanmushi (savory egg custard)
- Pumpkin gratin in Japanese style
- Hot pot: Meat with a wild taste (unclear if it was wild boar or pork)
- Rice served in a wooden box
Since the rice was served in a wooden box, I made sure to finish it all in a bowl. It's very satisfying to have such a course meal at a guesthouse. After dinner, despite the light rain, I took a short walk around Amanohashidate. Since most of the streetlights were off, it was quite dark, but when I walked along the coast, the sound of the waves in the darkness created a mysterious atmosphere. Although I could see the lights of buildings on the opposite shore to some extent, I crouched down at the water's edge and listened to the sound of the waves for a while. It felt like being pulled into the waves, but surprisingly, there was no sense of fear. In our busy lives, we often neglect our immediate surroundings. This trip not only allowed me to reflect on recent events but also provided an opportunity to rethink my direction for the future. It was a day where I couldn't do much food walking as planned, but I will make the most of the remaining time.
