Every time I walk down Kawaramachi Street, I am drawn in by the allure of Tengu-san's homemade noodles at "Sasamen." When I arrived a little after 11:30 am, I was shocked to find the place completely full! It seemed like the restaurant had opened at 11:00 am, as people kept lining up one after another. With tables for four and two all occupied, it was truly surprising to see the popularity of this place. The cold noodles, mixed with soy sauce broth and homemade mayonnaise, were delicious and different from the usual cold noodles you find at local Chinese restaurants. It seems like 80% of the customers ordered the cold noodles, which just shows how popular it is. I look forward to trying their frost-covered udon in the winter. Thank you for the wonderful meal!

I was drawn to this place by its unique interior and the word "Sasamen," which means homemade noodles. I love sour foods, so I decided to try their cold noodles this time. You can also order a large portion for an additional 200 yen, which is what I did. The dish arrived surprisingly quickly, with homemade mayonnaise and mustard on the side as other reviewers had mentioned. The noodles were mixed with the sauce and had a nice sour flavor, complemented by the toppings of diced char siu, cucumber, shredded egg, cherry tomatoes, and watercress. It was delicious! I haven't had cold noodles or cold Chinese noodles outside for a long time, but this dish made me regret not trying them sooner. I usually don't like mayonnaise, but the homemade mayonnaise added a rich egg flavor that paired well with the noodles and sauce. I will definitely come back to try other items on the menu. Thank you for the meal!

Thank you for the delicious meal! As soon as the restaurant opened, it was fully packed... and there were even people waiting. The daily specials were curry beef and egg over rice bowl, and cold Chinese noodles with Kyoto green onions and wasabi with homemade mayonnaise. The signature "Sasamen" noodles were nicely chilled and had a good texture, especially when mixed with the broth and mayonnaise. The curry beef and egg over rice bowl was delicious without the curry overpowering the flavors. Also, the shichimi and sansho spices had a nice aroma, showing that they use good quality ingredients.

On a sunny day on May 16th, I visited Kyoto to watch the "Roto no Gi" of one of the three major festivals in Kyoto, the "Aoi Matsuri". The viewing spot was at the southern end of the Kyoto Imperial Palace, slightly east of the "Sakaimachi Omon" gate, on the south side of Marutamachi Street, and it was crowded with people. The procession is divided into the main procession and the Saio-dai procession. After the Saio-dai procession passed, I followed the procession and headed north on Kawaramachi Street to the front of "Jikaseimen Tengu". The shop is located a little north of the intersection of "Aragamiguchi", but it seems that the spectators of the procession do not know that this is a popular shop. I was able to enter the shop smoothly at 11:40. It was a shop I had wanted to visit for a long time. I was planning to have udon, but I decided to have the "Charred Green Onion Beef (with seasoned egg)" (980 yen) made with "Sasamen" noodles. "Sasamen" is a homemade thin straight Chinese noodle. The charred green onion is green onion flavored with soy sauce and heated oil poured over it. It was a very hot day. I couldn't help but order my favorite beer, "Heartland" (600 yen). The dish was the "Charred Green Onion Beef (with seasoned egg)". Black pepper was served on the side. The toppings included beef, seasoned boiled egg, charred green onion, finely chopped green onions, white leeks, and three types of onions. The homemade Sasamen noodles looked like this, similar to yellow soba. First, I tried a sip of the clear broth... It was extremely delicious! It tasted like a refined Japanese-style ramen. The shop card I received is in a deep green color. At the bottom left, there is a design of a Tengu mask with the words "Menrui". And at the storefront, instead of "Tengu", a sign saying "Noodles" is displayed. The same logo is also dyed in red and white at the corner of the noren curtain. I must provide information to MBS's program "Kyoto Noren Detective".^^

Charred green onion beef udon with flavored egg at a Chinese noodle shop. Here, they call it "sasamen" instead of "kii soba." The homemade noodles are what make it special. It's a different world of noodles compared to ramen shops. The texture is soft yet has a certain firmness to it. Is this what they call Shimada topping? Interesting.

The atmosphere and service at this restaurant are very pleasant. Today, I had the adult curry udon and the marbled beef hot pot udon. The marbled beef hot pot udon is only available from winter to March, so I wanted to try it. Everything I tried was delicious at this restaurant. I recommend the spicy adult curry udon.

Near the Kyoto Legal Affairs Bureau, there is a Tengu-san restaurant. Whenever I go to the Legal Affairs Bureau for lunch, I always go to Tengu-san for lunch. It can be a bit of a wait, but it's worth it because everything tastes delicious at Tengu-san. The atmosphere, taste, and service are all fantastic.

Sasamen was delicious. They have a gentle flavor that makes everything taste great. It may be a bit pricey for an udon shop, but the service and taste are worth it. It's a popular spot for lunch, with a calming atmosphere. Definitely a must-visit restaurant.

I wanted to eat curry udon, but when I entered the restaurant, I found the winter limited edition "Frost Udon" (katsu soup simmered in a pot) for 1150 yen. Even though I was tempted by the curry udon, it was a cold day with snow falling, so I decided to order the Frost Udon. And it was a great choice! It was my first time trying katsu soup-based udon, and it had a gentle flavor that warmed my body. The udon didn't fall apart even after being simmered with tempura shrimp. The soup had finely chopped vegetables and fish, giving it a satisfying texture. I finished the udon but still had soup left, so I added a small bowl of rice for 150 yen. Mixing in some spiciness made it even more delicious. I highly recommend the Frost Udon.

Aragami-kuchi - It's been a while since I last visited. I pass by here often but it's been a while since I actually stopped by. Let's take a leisurely stroll later!! First, let's have a meal (^_^)/ Upon entering the restaurant, I noticed two women sitting on the waiting chairs. The restaurant only has table seats, with 6 tables for 4 people and 1 table for 2 people. There was a notice saying that they are avoiding shared seating due to the pandemic. There was also a small TV mounted on the wall. The atmosphere was calm, and everyone was enjoying their hot meals, so even though there were only three of us waiting, the timing might not be immediate. When the staff came to take our order, they mentioned that they only had "sasamen" available...which is what I came for...lol. It's different from what I had in mind...I wonder if it's udon that will be served...? The menu on the wall had "frosty udon" listed... "What's this~!" I thought, even though I didn't know what it was. Today's order: Curry beef sasamen and a small egg bowl set for 1100 yen. The curry broth was not particularly spicy, not too thick, and easy to slurp. The taste had a moderate amount of curry spices, and it blended well with the broth. For those who like to dive into the rice at the end, it might feel a bit lacking in richness...? By the way, the term "sasamen" on the menu is not a familiar term, and it's actually their unique name for Chinese noodles (chuka soba). The menu describes it as thin straight Chinese noodles, but they are not extremely thin. The sasamen doesn't get soggy easily in the hot curry broth, and its chewy texture goes well with the curry broth! Along with the curry beef sasamen, they also served raw chili peppers. "Please use it as you like!" they said, but the spiciness was just right for me, so I didn't use it. If you prefer more spiciness, you might want to try the "Adult Beef Curry for 1050 yen" listed on the limited quantity menu page, which supposedly has a stronger spice level. This menu is only available with sasamen. It seems that the lunch hours go until 2 PM for last orders, as customers were coming in until the last minute (^_^)/

Tengu-san, the atmosphere is amazing! It's a shop where you can experience the feeling of sightseeing in Kyoto! The taste is excellent! Everyone says it's delicious! The udon and thin noodles have the best flavor and broth! If you're near for lunch while sightseeing in Kyoto, this is a must-visit restaurant. It's a hidden gem.

After many years, I visited "Tengu" again. This shop is known for its fine straight Chinese noodles called "Sasamen" that go well with udon and homemade broth. There are various menu items, but on a cold day, the spicy "Adult Beef Curry Sasamen" is a delight. The bonito flakes on top of this curry sasamen are amazing. The spicy broth is delicious, and the sasamen noodles are well coated with the broth. The beef is plentiful, and eating it with green onions is even better. Surprisingly, there is a chili paste that allows you to adjust the spiciness, which becomes addictive. It's spicy but not too much, just the right amount of heat. It's so good that you'll want to add a little more heat. This is great. It was delicious to eat with white rice, but I regret not diving in after finishing the meal. I can't wait to go back to this restaurant soon.

I had lunch at "Tengu" in Higashizakura-cho, Kamigyo-ku, located on Kawaramachi Street near Aramikado. The restaurant was recommended on the JR Tokai website "Let's Go to Kyoto". It was a 10-minute walk north on Kawaramachi Street from Keihan Electric Railway's Marutamachi Station, crossing the Kamogawa River via the Marutamachi Bridge. Upon entering the restaurant, it was quite crowded, so I had to wait a bit before being seated. The interior had 6 tables for 4 people each and 1 table for 2 people. There was no counter seating, and they did not seat customers together, so there might be a bit of a wait if you arrive at a busy time. I was seated after about 5 minutes. Although the kitsune udon in the photos on the website looked delicious, I decided to try the seasonal limited "Shimofuri Sasaemen" listed on the menu. My companion wanted the ankake udon, so we ordered that as well. The dishes were served in less than 10 minutes. The "Shimofuri" was made with sake lees, and the sasaemen was made with Chinese noodles. It reminded me of "Key" at Yako on Gokashita-dori x Muromachi-dori. The homemade straight noodles and sake lees broth were perfect for the season. They also provided chili paste for those who like spicy food, which added a nice touch to the dish. I visited on a Friday afternoon, and although there weren't many tourists, the restaurant was consistently busy with locals. I would love to try their regular udon and rice dishes in the future. Visited before 12:00 on Saturday, August 20, 2022, and had to wait outside. The wait was about 10 minutes, felt like quite a long wait but it couldn't be helped. I ordered the sasamen curry, which seems to be a beef curry with burnt scallions. It took a bit of time for the food to arrive. I wonder if it's always busy around lunchtime? The customers were about half tourists and half locals. The taste was great, with a lot of beef giving a mix of Japanese dashi and beef umami, which I really enjoyed. Maybe it would have been even more delicious if it was curry? I'll try that next time.

Visited around 1 pm on a weekday and waited for about 15 minutes before entering. This time's menu included Chilled Cold Noodles with Grated Daikon for ¥980. The mini bowl of Tempura Egg Beef Bowl was unbelievably delicious. I tried Chilled Cold Noodles for the first time, and the thin noodles had more chewiness compared to Chinese noodles. The refreshing texture was perfect for the hot summer, and the flavorful sauce was also very tasty.

Located about a 3-minute walk west from Marutamachi Station on the Keihan Main Line, this restaurant is situated to the northwest of Arakamiguchi on Kawaramachi Street. It seems to be a popular spot known for its noodles made with homemade sasamen. I tried it for the first time and personally, I thought it was incredibly delicious. The owner of the shop was also very nice.

I had wanted to go to this restaurant for a long time! Every time I tried to go, it was closed or there was a long line, but on my third attempt, I finally managed to visit (*^^*). I ordered the Curry Niku Sasa Udon and the Kogashira Donburi for 980 yen each. The dishes had plenty of meat and were delicious. However, I still think that white rice goes best with curry udon. Thank you for the meal (^人^)

At the Udon restaurant at the intersection near Aragami-guchi, they serve homemade noodles. During lunchtime, many people order set meals. Among them, the daily special "Kasusasame" is popular, which includes milk, oil kasu, and burnt green onions (Sasame refers to Chinese noodles). It comes with mentaiko rice for 980 yen, and the sweetness of the oil kasu blends perfectly with the broth, making it exquisite. I also tried the curry beef that I had last time with udon, but this time with sasame, and it was delicious. The sasame suited the dish better than udon, and it was very tasty.

Curry set for ¥980 including tax, udon sold out so I had sasamen instead. The mysterious richness of the broth, flavor, and the egg bowl leaves a delightful aftertaste (did anyone else notice?). The sense of taste is varied and good. Definitely worth revisiting. The menu, including daily specials, is intriguing. Visited this place as my first choice was closed for the day, and it turned out to be a great find. The portion of noodles was generous. I was worried if I could finish the mini egg bowl as well, but the delicious and not boring taste made me finish it at a fast pace. The interior of the restaurant looked spacious and clean. On this day, they closed the signboard at 8:40 pm. It seems like their policy is to stay open even after 8 pm as much as possible.

Today, I finally got to visit "Jikasei Men Tengu" which was featured in a certain magazine and I had been wanting to go for a while. This place is an udon restaurant that serves a unique type of udon called "Sasamen" made with original Chinese noodles. I ordered the "Sasamen with burnt green onions and beef (with flavored egg) in a large serving" and the "small egg bowl" set. The restaurant has a traditional udon shop atmosphere, with customers ranging from families to young people. The food arrived quickly. The soup had a udon flavor to it. The noodles were thin and chewy, topped with beef, chopped green onions, wakame seaweed, enoki mushrooms, and a flavored egg. The egg bowl was sprinkled generously with sansho pepper. The Sasamen had a Chinese noodle base with a flavored egg on top, but the overall taste was more reminiscent of udon. Overall, it was a satisfying meal.
