Kyoto is a shop for traditional Japanese sweets located across from the Minami-za theater in Gion. They offer sweets like sweetened beans. The "Maroi Mochi" costs 170 yen and is round and soft. It looks like a dorayaki or a jellied rice cake. The texture is chewy with sweet red bean paste inside, so you can't go wrong there. However, the sweetness is stronger compared to other jellied rice cakes. It paired well with tea.

I took the Keihan train to Kyoto. During this time when the pandemic had settled down, Gion was bustling with activity ☆°。⋆⸜(* ॑꒳ ॑* )⸝ In front of the Minamiza Theater, there is a traditional Japanese confectionery shop called "Tourokugo". Although I had passed by it many times before, this was my first time going inside. They sell elegant and Kyoto-style traditional Japanese sweets such as "Goshikimame" which are large colorful sugar-coated beans in white, red, yellow, brown, and green colors. They also offer sweetened beans made with chestnuts and sweet potatoes.◉Sweetened beans with chestnuts, red beans, and sweet potatoes: 1790 yen◉Maroi Mochi (6 pieces): 1330 yenThe "Maroi Mochi" that I saw for the first time is described as having a "round and mellow taste". While it looks similar to Ajari Mochi, it also resembles a round dorayaki. This original sweet is not sold in station buildings or department stores. The chewy skin had a delightful texture, and the sweet red bean paste inside was a bit on the sweeter side. It would be perfect to enjoy with matcha or sencha, as well as coffee. The sweets come in a sturdy gift box with a refined washi paper design, wrapped carefully by the staff with a neat string. I love this extra touch of elegance that is so characteristic of Kyoto.(*ˊ˘ˋ*)。♪:*°Since it is located right in front of the Minamiza Theater and close to Gion-Shijo Station, it is perfect for souvenirs. I would love to visit again when the season changes. Thank you for the wonderful treat! (*´▽`人)

On our way back from Saryo Tsujiri, we stopped by this shop located in a prominent location on Shijo Street. It seems to be very popular among tourists as well. This time, we bought the signature product "Maroi Mochi" for souvenirs and for ourselves. It looks like a dorayaki! Well, we can pretty much imagine the taste... However, what sets Kyoto's traditional sweets apart is something that cannot be measured by imagination. The mochi is soft and moist, with a generous amount of refined sweetness from the red bean paste. It may seem like just any ordinary traditional sweet that you can find at a convenience store, but once you taste it, you realize it's something special. It takes years of establishing popularity in this city to achieve this level of quality. I am truly impressed. Regardless of the ratings on food review websites, Kyoto's traditional sweets are truly profound. Thank you for the meal!

Here is in front of Minamiza in Kyoto❗ Due to the influence of Corona, the Gion area is quite deserted, like a ghost town❗ I recommend visiting Yoshida-san before Setsubun♪ I choose "Fuku wa uchi, oni wa soto"♪ Cute❗ There are Many blessings, Red demon, and a hexagonal lucky turtle shape with five-colored beans and roasted soybeans❗ ⭕ It was only sold as a limited set. The cost is 1350 ryos❗ Haha m(__)m⭐ With wishes in mind, let's say "oni ni kanabo"❗ It's a life or death situation❗ The crisis of Japan being destroyed❗ Corona, please die quickly‼️ In the world as it is♪ Let's execute it by decapitation or crucifixion❗♪ Can you see this Aoi crest?✨Gold✨(^-^)v(^-^) To be continued This year, let's change it to "Fuku wa uchi, oni wa soto" outside Corona~♪ Shall we try changing it❓ Next time, let's search for the Aoi crest❗

I returned to Gion Shijo Station and found this place right across from Minami-za. I've walked past this shop many times before, but I had never visited until now. The owner, who was preparing to close, welcomed me in when I asked if it was still okay to come in. I was allowed to take photos inside, and the shop was very cute and nicely decorated. There were two types of sweets that caught my eye. One was called "Maroimo," a round, soft, and mellow treat with a chewy dough filled with red bean paste and mochi. It had just the right amount of sweetness and was delicious. The other was "Choco Maneki," a cookie covered in matcha chocolate, possibly inspired by the popular actors' name boards put up near Minami-za for the "Kao Mise" event. The prices were reasonable, making it a perfect gift for coworkers. I definitely plan to visit again. Thank you for the wonderful treats!

This shop faces Shijo-dori in Gion, Kyoto, between Yamato-oji and Kawabata. It used to be a traditional Japanese sweets shop, originally specializing in bean sweets. I bought some Maroimo (sweet potato mochi), Warabimochi (bracken-starch dumpling), and Goshiki-mame (five-colored beans) here. These make for great little gifts. I always thought the shop was called "Jurokugo," but it's actually called "Tourokugo," which was a new discovery for me this time. Warabimochi has a surprisingly generous portion and is refreshing and delicious. The Goshiki-mame has a nostalgic taste to it. These traditional Kyoto sweets are truly appreciated. They were well received and enjoyed. Thank you for the meal.

My friends who went sightseeing in Kyoto in November 2020 sent me souvenirs! They got them from a traditional confectionery shop called "Touroku Go" located diagonally across from Gion Minamiza Theater. The items they sent were: "Maroi Mochi" for 150 yen, and "Furikabuse" (Warabi Mochi) for 720 yen. "Touroku Go" originally started as "Touroku Go" and later changed to "Touroku Go" using easy-to-remember Kanji characters. I tried the "Maroi Mochi" on the same day, which is a cute and delicious steamed bun filled with sweet red bean paste. The next day, I tried the "Furikabuse," which is a gelatinous mochi made from bracken starch, arrowroot starch, and granulated sugar. It had a chewy texture and was even more flavorful when sprinkled with plenty of soybean flour. I have tried three different types of "Warabi Mochi" within two weeks in November, each offering a unique texture and taste. Delicious!

In November 2020, I had a luxurious dinner at "Miyoshi" in Gion and decided to buy souvenirs at "Juroku Go" before returning to Osaka on the Keihan line. I chose warabimochi as a gift for my friend, and for myself, I bought two items: Maroi Mochi for 150 yen and 5 pieces of chestnuts with astringent skin for 950 yen. I had them as soon as I got home. Maroi Mochi: The soft and chewy dough contains red bean paste and shiratama paste, perfect for tea time. The small size makes it easy to eat as many as you want. It was very delicious! Astringent chestnuts: It's like a marron glace. It's quite sweet, but it captures the flavor of chestnuts inside. It was also delicious (and a large size). The service was very polite, and I would like to visit again. Thank you for the meal!

I was walking through the shopping street on my way to Yasaka Shrine, and I was drawn to a shop that caught my eye. I was intrigued by the "Namigoori" sweet bean jelly made with glutinous rice flour. I love things that can only be found in certain places, so I always look for unique shops and products when I travel. Since I had never seen sweet bean jelly made with glutinous rice flour before, I didn't hesitate to make a purchase. I also bought the "Furikabuse" bracken-starch dumplings displayed next to it, as the name sounded charming. The shopkeeper was modest yet very polite, and I couldn't help but feel happy as I received my items and thanked them. They even gave me two pieces of five-colored beans, saying, "Enjoy them like candy while you stroll around." I love experiencing these moments when buying traditional Japanese sweets. I grew up in a downtown area and often received rice cakes and red rice from the local sweet shop. I also learned about the love put into sweets through tea ceremonies taught by my great aunt. This shopping experience reminded me of those memories. The Namigoori tasted like eating sakura mochi, and the Furikabuse had a gentle flavor that made me want to sprinkle kinako on it just before eating. These simple sweets may have a subtle impression, but they occasionally make me feel like having them again. I know times are tough with a decrease in tourism, but I hope these old-fashioned shops continue to thrive.

I felt like having sweet potato yokan after a long time, so I went to Shijo to buy some. I love the gentle sweetness of this sweet potato yokan. I also bought sweetened beans that my father likes. They were selling cute heart-shaped monaka as well. I will come back again to buy the black bean sweetened beans that were not available today.

I also bought these heart-shaped monaka (4 pieces) for 777 yen when I visited Gion. It was a perfect treat for Valentine's Day. Instead of chocolate, these are a great option too. They are filled with sweet red bean paste. Located across from Minami-za in Gion. Address: 212 Chunancho, Higashiyama-ku, 075-561-0165. Open from 9:30 AM to 9:00 PM.

Whenever I go to Kyoto, I almost always visit this dessert shop at night. They have a variety of sweets and all of them are delicious. The location is also convenient. I usually buy small bags of soft rice cakes and sweetened beans as souvenirs for my friends, and I distribute them to several people.

This is a shop that sells traditional Japanese sweets located diagonally across from the Kyoto Minami-za theater, which is currently under renovation. As I passed by the shop, I spotted some cute heart-shaped sweets in a glass case! I was in a hurry at that time, so I decided to stop by after having lunch and before catching the Hankyu train. Heart-shaped Monaka (wafer) filled with red bean paste is a classic product of this shop, priced at 160 yen for one piece or 720 yen for a box of four. The light pink heart-shaped Monaka is adorable! The wafer is crispy and the red bean paste inside is made from high-quality adzuki beans, not too sweet and very elegant. It's great that you can buy just one piece. Since it's not too big, it's gone in no time! The box containing four pieces of Monaka is elegant and cute, making it a perfect gift to bring to someone.

This is a traditional Japanese confectionery shop located along Shijo Street. I was intrigued by the interesting shaped wagashi displayed in the window, so I decided to go inside. One that caught my eye was a wagashi in the shape of a strawberry. There was also one in the shape of a heart. Most tourists just walk past without stopping, but it's a shame because they are missing out. Now, about the strawberry wagashi, it has a red bean paste filling with strawberry juice inside. While fruit-filled bean paste is not uncommon, it needs to taste good to stand out. If you know someone who hasn't tried this type of wagashi before, or someone who enjoys cute shaped wagashi, this would be a nice gift. Maybe traditional Japanese confectionery could be used in a more romantic way as well.

In April 2015, I bought sweet chestnuts with astringent skin at a shop in front of Shoren-in Monzeki. Although the price was not cheap, making astringent chestnuts yourself is quite laborious and yellow sweet chestnuts are not common. I was impressed by the refined sweetness when I tried them back at the hotel, so I decided to make them a Kyoto souvenir. The expiration date is two weeks, so I should be able to give them away somehow. I looked it up on the internet and found another shop in front of Nanzan, so I went back to buy more. I don't usually eat assorted beans, so I had them pack various sweet chestnuts in a box. I also bought sweet potato and sweet beans sweet chestnuts for myself. The shop is small, so if there are other customers, it may take a little time for packing and wrapping, so be aware if you're in a hurry! I usually don't eat sweet chestnuts because they are too sweet, but I enjoyed the refined sweetness of these even after returning from my trip, savoring them with tea. In November 2016, I bought a small bag of astringent chestnuts (about 100g for 5 pieces, around 900 yen) for myself and as a souvenir. Gift box cost is separate.
