Kyoto Ganko Takasegawa Nijo-en Oyashiki Cafe Afternoon Tea ¥3,080 (tax included) It's amazing to be able to enjoy afternoon tea in a historical and dignified mansion ❤️ Established in Osaka in 1963, Ganko is now known nationwide for its "delicious, affordable, and enjoyable" sushi and Japanese cuisine. In addition to casual stores in entertainment districts, there are also several stores located in historical mansions. Among them, we visited Ganko Takasegawa Nijo-en in Kyoto this time. Built in the Keicho era by the wealthy merchant Tsunokura Ryoei, the Japanese garden (also known as Takasegawa Springs Garden) was created, and later became the villa of the Meiji statesman Aritomo Yamagata. It was passed down to prominent figures such as the third governor of the Bank of Japan, Koichiro Kawada, and is now known as Oiwake-tei, serving as the Ganko Takasegawa Nijo-en restaurant. Passing through the grand gate, you enter the mansion. There are many spacious tatami rooms, but surprisingly, there is also a luxurious Western-style room where you can enjoy sweets and afternoon tea as a "mansion cafe". From the window, you can overlook the Japanese garden, providing a luxurious setting to enjoy afternoon tea, and it's surprisingly very reasonable. The meal set includes: - Tamba chestnut and soy milk mousse - Colorful vegetable salad - Two types of honey-drizzled fresh wheat gluten - Seasonal vegetable pinchos - Tuna and salmon flower sushi - Sushi restaurant-style rolled omelette - Prosciutto cream cheese bouquet The dessert set includes: - Matcha-scented cheesecake - Mochi-wrapped pie with sweet bean paste - Soy milk jelly with black honey and kinako - Soy milk baumkuchen The seasonal tart is Shine Muscat flavored. Drinks include a choice of two from: - Freshly brewed coffee - Kyoto black tea (lemon/milk/straight) - Flavored tea - Ginger ale - Cabernet Sauvignon juice - Orange juice For an additional ¥1,100 (tax included), you can choose one of the following: - Domestic sparkling wine - Special seasonal potage soup The tea foods have a wonderful balance of Japanese and Western cuisine, with a focus on Japanese dishes. The savory items include beautifully arranged temari sushi and rolled omelette from a sushi restaurant. There are also Kyoto-style dishes like fresh wheat gluten. The bite-sized pinchos are easy to eat and feature shrimp and a hearty burdock root stew, among others. A salad is also included with a variety of vegetables. The sweets feature a cute four-leaf clover design on the matcha cheesecake. The soy milk mousse is layered and smooth. A unique dessert is the pie-wrapped pie with mochi, offering a crispy, chewy texture with sweet bean paste inside. For a refreshing summer treat, there's soy milk jelly instead of traditional warabi mochi, with a bouncy texture and black honey and kinako topping. Another popular sweet from Ganko is the soy milk baumkuchen, available in the souvenir corner as well. It's garnished with chocolate sauce or bruleed, offering a unique twist. In addition to the cake stand, a seasonal tart is also included, currently featuring Shine Muscat. It's a generous size, and at ¥638 for a single cake, it's a great deal! The cream cheese cream is not overly sweet, allowing the refreshing sweetness of the Shine Muscat to shine. The drink selection is surprisingly extensive, with options like coffee, Kyoto black tea, herb tea, juice, and more. You can choose two from the list, and I couldn't help but exclaim to the staff, "Are you sure this is all included?" The Cabernet Sauvignon juice even comes in a full bottle of Alain Milliat! It's such a great value considering that a single glass at a hotel would cost around ¥1,000. With such a wide variety of dishes, a great selection of drinks, and the opportunity to enjoy afternoon tea in a historic mansion while overlooking a Japanese garden, all for ¥3,080 (tax included), Ganko is truly generous!
