At a welcome and farewell party, you walk a little from the visiting station to a shop that is popular among juniors, where you can enjoy chicken yakiniku. The old shop name was Sumo Chicken, so the menu is inspired by sumo wrestling. Various cuts are included in the sets, all chosen by the juniors. First, we had the Shiroboshi set, grilled with salt, which includes thigh, neck, skin, triangle, cartilage, and harami. The salt brings out the natural flavor of the meat. Next, we had the Dohyoiri set, which includes thigh, neck, and harami grilled with sauce. The sauce is a punchy sweet and savory flavor. The regular juniors naturally ordered rice, and I was also forced to order it. But eating the sauce with rice is delicious!

Head to Sumo Chicken in Minami Ward, Kyoto. It's located about 280m northeast from Exit 1 of Karasuma Line Jujo Station. The atmosphere inside the restaurant is just as sumo-themed as the name suggests, with set menus like "Dosukoi Grilled Assortment" and "Honbasho Set." One highlight is the "Chicken Sashimi Assortment," especially the delicious white liver that tastes almost like foie gras. The grilled items are also top-notch, with fresh ingredients cooked rare upon request. The lineup includes various parts like cartilage, liver, skin, tail, meatball, gizzard, and more. Enjoy them with ponzu, pepper, or a unique fruity sauce. The menu also features new items like the "New Wrestler Debut" (laughs). Lastly, if you want to try some pork, add on a sausage that's truly authentic. It was a delightful meal!

The set of three roles for 1500 yen, medium draft beer for 550 yen, tsukune for 550 yen, and kimchi for 450 yen. The kimchi was a bit less than expected, but its salty flavor was a good accent to the usual taste.

Honestly, at first glance, I was hesitant to enter the store because of its appearance. However, once I went in, it was definitely the right choice. I was able to enjoy incredibly delicious chicken.

The deliciousness is so fresh that it's hard to resist! "I've been wanting to come here for a long time, and today I finally made it." When I shared this, the owner kindly gave me lots of information. Thank you so much, sir!

I went to a yakitori restaurant with a yakiniku style. I ordered the East Set which included thigh, heart, neck, skin, and tsukune for 2,200 yen. They recommended trying the tsukune with three different sauces and salt. The other skewers already had salt seasoning. The portions were generous, and I was very full with just this set. The meat was very fresh, and the salt seasoning really brought out the deliciousness of the meat. I also had a beer for 500 yen, bringing the total to 2,700 yen. It was a great meal.

I was the driver that day, so unfortunately I had to go with non-alcoholic drinks. If it had been beer, this amount would have been a lot for two people. There was a group of four salarymen at a table who also ordered the same thing. The chicken skewers were recommended to be eaten with garlic, and it was really good. The white star set (2500 yen) was grilled and eaten. My favorite part was the skin. Grilling it until crispy and enjoying it with beer would be the best way to go. Thank you for the meal.

A rare restaurant where you can eat grilled chicken, not yakitori. The name of the place is Sumo Chicken. It is said to be run by a former sumo wrestler, and there are many sumo handprints inside the restaurant. The chicken is fresh and delicious. I recommend the miso-grilled chicken. If you cook it just before it's fully grilled, it's soft and juicy! You can taste the excellent flavor. There used to be raw liver on the menu, but it seems to have disappeared due to recent issues. Too bad. There are also counter seats, so it's easy to go in alone. The friendly old man serves you with care. One of the hidden gem restaurants that you might not want to tell others about.

Not yakitori, but grilled chicken in yakiniku style. If you're looking for a place that serves grilled chicken in a yakiniku style and you're willing to venture a bit further out to places like Jidoriya or Onza, then this is the place for you. It's a pretty deep area in Kyoto, but the transportation is good and it's safe to visit. The restaurant has a local feel to it, like an old-fashioned yakiniku place. The menu is simple, offering chicken assortments and individual items seasoned with salt or sauce. The side menu is also simple. Enjoy grilled chicken with a beer in hand - that's all you need. I personally stuck to beer throughout my visit. The atmosphere and menu are more suited for those who can enjoy alcohol. The salt-flavored assortment I tried first included various cuts like neck, tail, soft bone, thigh, and skin for around 2000 yen. Grilling on the stove helps to remove excess fat, making it delicious. For those who love chicken, one plate and a beer or even chicken porridge as a finale might be enough for one person. However, I visited with a chicken-loving friend, so we decided to order another plate. We got the Dosukoi platter, a 1-kilogram sauced assortment, where the contents are left to the chef's choice. It included a variety of parts, with lots of heart and liver on the day we visited. The sauce was thick, so it tended to burn easily. For those who want to eat rice, this might be the way to go. Personally, I prefer grilling with salt and enjoying it with the condiments at hand. We almost finished the huge 1-kilogram portion. We spent about two hours there, as they close at 11 pm. We left the restaurant feeling full and satisfied. We had about five pints of draft beer and two chicken assortments, totaling 9300 yen. It was a bit pricey this time due to the large portion, but you can dine and drink for around 3000 yen per person. There are counter seats where you can dine alone without any worries. If you're looking to enjoy a hearty meal of grilled chicken instead of yakitori and want to eat it with rice from the start, this place is recommended.

<<Access>> Located just north of the intersection of Taketa Highway and Jujou, on the east side. <<Appearance, Interior>> It's an old-fashioned shop. The lighting is a bit dim, so be sure not to miss it. Inside, there are counter seats, tables, and even a raised seating area. It's a well-established shop. <<Ordered Items>> Shirahoshi Set - ¥2500 Tsukune (meatballs) - ¥500 Rice - ¥200 Oolong tea - ¥300 <<Impressions>> This is one of the shops I've grown to like and visit frequently. It's convenient to go during odd hours. It was past 22:00 on a weekday, and there were three other groups of customers in the shop. The Shirahoshi Set for ¥2500 includes momo (thigh), seseri (neck), skin, cartilage, sankaku (triangle), and harami (skirt) salt-grilled set. You get quite a generous portion of various cuts. With this and some beer, two people with small appetites might be satisfied. The meat is always fresh and delicious. The tsukune for ¥500 is a firm and tasty meatball. If we don't order much else, we usually get this along with rice, tamago soup, and a small portion of grilled meat for around ¥5000 for two people. There's hardly any vegetables apart from the cabbage that comes with the meal, so it might be tough for vegetable lovers.

There are various set menus available, ranging from 1500 to 3000 yen for two servings. According to my friend, the chicken here is fresh and can be eaten slightly rare. Personally, I prefer it well cooked for a more satisfying bite. It's a bit disappointing that it's not charcoal-grilled, but the prices are reasonable and I left satisfied. If you park at a nearby parking lot, you can receive a free service. September 2015, second visit. I previously rated it 3 stars, but I will correct that now. It's really delicious. I apologize to Sumo Chicken. I didn't like the sauce last time, but this time I had the classic set with thigh, tenderloin, and neck for 1400 yen. It comes with salt sauce, salt and pepper, and a ponzu-like sauce. I liked the salt sauce the best. The salt and pepper was a bit too overpowering with the pepper. Personally, I prefer rock salt. I like the neck meat the most. It's tender with just the right amount of fat, and the occasional cartilage is tasty. The kimchi here is not very spicy or sour. The chicken porridge has little chicken and the rice is so-so. The chicken tataki is worth trying for its uniqueness, but it's not mind-blowing. October 2015, third visit. Today I went to Torisei for lunch, and also went back at night for more chicken for comparison. Sumo Chicken is tastier. Today, I ordered individual items instead of a set. I love the neck meat. Beer is also cheap here. I will definitely come back.
