I visited "Maruya" in Pontocho. The chef recommended yakitori and oden, which I love. I chose a counter seat to watch the chef's performance. I enjoyed Kyoto oden, grilled skewers, and Kyoto vegetables. The atmosphere was cozy and the dishes were delicious, served in beautiful dishes. The chef worked efficiently despite the busy restaurant. It was a delightful and fun experience.

Chicken and Oden at Maruya Nishiki Takakura-san
I had been wanting to come here for a while, so I took a half day off on a weekday to visit. The full side dish set meal is 950 yen. Today's daily special was mackerel in sweet miso and pork loin. The restaurant turned out to be smaller than I had expected, and I was seated at the end of the counter. There were many regular customers, which made me feel a bit out of place, haha. The set meal arrived in a flash at 12:31. In the center was the mackerel in sweet miso, surrounded by various Kyoto side dishes in small plates. The person next to me ordered the daily special for 800 yen, and it didn't seem that different from mine. I wonder if they didn't have a small dish of konjac. You can get free refills of rice, and even the women were asking for refills. If you're looking for a typical Kyoto meal to soothe your tired stomach and body during your trip, this place is just right. It's conveniently located near Nishiki Market. Thank you for the meal.

It's about a 5-minute walk from Karasuma Station! It's located on Takakura Street before entering Nishiki Market. There is a lunch sign, but if it's not there, you might miss it. It's a traditional townhouse tucked away a bit. For lunch, they offer a daily choice of fish or meat, as well as oyakodon. Today, I felt like having meat, so... You can see the cooking happening right in front of you at the counter. The grilled fish was cooked slowly in what looked like a charcoal kiln. The miso soup and three side dishes were delicious, and the main dish was great too. It's definitely worth more than the price (laughs). Thank you for the meal!

I had a meal on Shijo Street and felt like having some Japanese food and sake. I came across a charming restaurant in a renovated old Japanese house and decided to go in. The interior of the restaurant reminded me of my grandparents' house, creating a calming atmosphere. The specialty dish here is oden, which pairs perfectly with Japanese sake and helps to relax even after having a few drinks. The shichimi pepper provided as a condiment is incredibly delicious and goes well with any snack. I settled the bill at my table and had a wonderful dining experience.

We went to Maruya Nishiki for lunch on March 5th. I love the grilled fish lunch here the most. That day, they served Pacific saury. The side dishes were also very satisfying. My companion had the ginger pork belly dish, which they said was delicious. The atmosphere is cozy and I love this hidden gem of a restaurant. Thank you very much.

There is a shop on Takakura Street, just above Nishikikoji. I was intrigued by the sign and decided to go in. The shop is located at the back of an alley. Inside, there is a small raised area and a counter. We were guided to the counter at the back. I ordered the "oyakodon" for 850 yen, and my wife ordered the "daily special set meal" for 800 yen, which came with homemade side dishes. This shop is known for its Awaji chicken and oden. I wanted to eat chicken, so I chose the oyakodon. My wife was fascinated by the charcoal grill and chose the daily mackerel set meal. The chicken in the oyakodon was tender and delicious. The egg was also very tasty. I couldn't believe the quality for this price. My wife's set meal was also incredibly delicious. Mackerel and charcoal - a perfect combination. The quiet staff worked hard to prepare the dishes. The restaurant was soon full of customers. I would like to visit again.

We went to Maruya Kin-san for lunch with three people on the 16th. It was our second visit, and it was delicious as always. The daily special was grilled mackerel this time. It was so tasty with the fat. We had a great lunch in the kotatsu seating. Thank you very much.

We went to Maruya Nishiki for lunch on the 10th with two people. It's a place we had been curious about as we passed by many times. You can choose from three options: daily special set (3 side dishes), oyakodon set, or full of side dishes set (5 daily side dishes). We decided to order the "full of side dishes set" since we were there. The mackerel was bigger and more delicious than expected, with a nice amount of fat. We will definitely come back again. Thank you very much.

Visited in July 2019 with a rating of 3.37 on Tabelog (42 reviews).
Ordered the "Lots of Side Dishes Set Meal" for 900 yen (tax included) which comes with 5 side dishes.
Decided to have Japanese food for lunch today and visited "Maruya Nishiki". I chose the "Lots of Side Dishes Set Meal" which has 2 more side dishes than the daily special set meal. You can choose between fish or meat for the main dish, and I went with fish since they had Pacific saury today. The lunch menu includes:
- Daily Special Set Meal for 750 yen (1 main dish + 3 side dishes)
- Lots of Side Dishes Set Meal for 950 yen (1 main dish + 5 side dishes)
- Oyakodon (Chicken and Egg Rice Bowl) for 800 yen (2 side dishes)
Seeing all the side dishes lined up on a big tray already made me excited. The side dishes were light and elegantly seasoned, and the miso soup was also light. The Pacific saury with oil on it was delicious as expected. The rice was also tasty and I ended up feeling quite full even though the portion didn't seem that big. Overall, it was a satisfying meal.

The main dish is a choice between charcoal-grilled fish or meat, with three side dishes, miso soup, and rice. It's great that the price is still 750 yen, just like before maternity leave. It's always crowded, and sometimes only meat is left because fish is popular. I prefer fish too. The servings like half a mackerel or one whole saury are large, so I end up leaving some rice. I appreciate that there are many side dishes. I visit this place regularly!

The sign that said "Jidori (local chicken) and Oden" caught my attention, so I sat at the available counter. They had chicken liver sashimi, which I ordered right away. It was the last one, and I wish I could have had more because it was so tender. They served it with sesame oil and salt, as well as wasabi soy sauce, which was a nice touch. After enjoying the tender liver, I tried the seasonal firefly squid with miso vinegar, and it was satisfying. I realized that I hadn't tried the signature dishes of grilled chicken and oden, so I quickly ordered three types of grilled chicken and grilled vegetables. I'll have to try the oden next time. The grilled chicken included thigh and breast with green onions, as well as tsukune (chicken meatballs). The grilled green onions were perfectly cooked and delicious.

I had some errands to run at Apple, so I visited the newly opened Apple store in Kyoto. I had to leave my iPhone there for about an hour, so I decided to explore the area and find a place to have lunch. I came across this restaurant where you can choose between fish or meat for your main dish. I opted for fish due to my recent lack of calcium intake. The atmosphere was very Kyoto-like with ingredients like hijiki, giving it an authentic feel. The restaurant is located very close to Nishiki Market, which may be why each ingredient tasted so delicious. I don't know if it was just my imagination, but the rice tasted exceptionally good. There were many interesting shops around, and I definitely want to visit again soon. I didn't have my smartphone with me, so I took photos with my mirrorless camera, which also added to the nice atmosphere in Kyoto.

Today, my colleague and I wandered around trying to decide where to eat, and we ended up choosing a place based on the sign outside. The entrance was a bit far, but the atmosphere was nice. The kitchen inside was small but efficient, which impressed me. I ordered the daily special, and when asked if I wanted meat or fish, I chose meat. I wanted to try the mackerel as well, but went with the meat option. The portion size was a bit small, but the price was reasonable. I will try ordering grilled fish next time. It was a satisfying meal.

During lunchtime, I wandered around the Nishiki Market area. I ended up at "Enya," a place I had visited before for izakaya at night. They offer daily specials including pork ginger stir-fry or salt-grilled mackerel. Both my companion and I chose the pork ginger stir-fry set meal. It came with four side dishes, adding to the value, and the taste was really delicious. The pork ginger stir-fry had mayonnaise on top, which made the rice even more enjoyable. The miso soup was perfectly seasoned and remained delicious until the last drop. The interior of the restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, resembling an old traditional house. It was a leisurely lunchtime experience. I will definitely come back. Thank you for the meal! <m(_ _)m>

After playing tennis, I stopped by a fish shop and tried the "Grilled Sweet and Spicy Pork" dish for the first time. The pork was grilled in a Chinese wok and coated in a sweet and spicy sauce, with a drizzle of mayonnaise on top. It was served with choy sum underneath. The flavor was exactly as described, and it went well with the rice. I also enjoyed the side dishes of boiled greens, bean sprout namul, and simmered hijiki seaweed. The rice was so delicious that I ended up getting a second helping. The Nishiki Market next door was very crowded, with a sudden increase in foreign tourists.

I often stop by this restaurant on my way back from tennis or with my wife. I enjoy salted mackerel (2 pieces), grilled mackerel with miso marinade, and salted saury freshly grilled over charcoal (in that order, I prefer strong salt flavor and don't need soy sauce). The side dishes include sautéed greens, bean sprout namul, and plenty of okara. The miso soup is light but flavorful. I usually eat about 3 bowls of rice, which is delicious when freshly cooked. All of this for 800 yen is a great deal, with plenty of vegetables to satisfy me. I haven't tried the grilled pork yet, but it looks delicious.

The autumn sky is high, after playing tennis, I went shopping and had a delicious grilled mackerel (800 yen) that was juicy with fat and seasoned well with salt, squeezed some lemon on it. One of the three side dishes was mountain vegetables, which I didn't eat, and just had simmered okara and greens. The deliciousness of the mackerel is worth three bowls of rice. Finally, finished with miso soup. Full and satisfied, yet refreshed.

I always pass by but have never entered before. I found this place after playing tennis, a traditional townhouse deep in the alley, and entered just before noon to find it almost full. In the middle, there was a hearth where they were grilling saury. I sat next to a customer eating grilled saury. For lunch, you can choose 3 dishes of either meat (ginger pork) or fish (today's saury) with side dishes for 800 yen. It took about 5 minutes for the freshly grilled saury to be ready. Two men were working together to cook and serve the food. It was lively and non-smoking during lunchtime. The salt-grilled saury was carefully grilled and had a good texture with tender meat and easily removable bones. The rice was delicious and I had seconds. The side dishes included sweetened tofu, bean sprouts, and pickled radish, as well as miso soup with a good broth and plenty of seaweed. It's a great place. I didn't expect to find such a good restaurant behind Daimaru. Next time, I'll try the ginger pork or mackerel. It's good to eat a lot for lunch and be more moderate for dinner. As for the mackerel, it was okay. The bean sprouts, sweetened tofu, and greens were tasty, so I had seconds. I also tried the grilled horse mackerel, which was crispy and easy to eat, with just the right amount of salt. I couldn't resist having seconds. The bean sprouts, greens, and konjac stew were delicious.
