ノアマンクロウ
The restaurant this time is "ONO" in Gokomachi, Kyoto. Known for their oden and kamameshi, this popular Japanese izakaya is located in Gokomachi in Kyoto. The restaurant has both private and semi-private sections, so it's recommended to make a reservation in advance. The location is on Gokomachi Street in Kyoto. The atmosphere inside is casual, like a typical Japanese cuisine restaurant. The main customers are young couples and mature groups. It's 5:00 PM. I arrived for the first seating and was seated at a table. I ordered the sashimi platter, assorted side dishes, tempura of conger eel, omelette, miso-grilled eggplant, and ginger tempura, and sea bream kamameshi. There were two types of appetizers. The foam on the draft beer was very fine. Now, let's dig in.
Review:
- Sashimi Platter: Fresh sashimi platter. They were all delicious, but the squid was particularly sweet and tasty. The sashimi is excellent, which is a big win for a sake-focused restaurant.
- Tempura of Conger Eel: The conger eel was served as tempura, and it was crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. It makes you want to have rice, but of course, it goes really well with sake.
- Oden (omelette, miso-grilled eggplant, pickled ginger): One of the two main attractions at ONO is the oden. The clear broth makes it easy to eat. It pairs well with sake, but it's light enough to go well with any type of alcohol. While it's a sake-focused place, they have a good selection of other drinks, making it a versatile oden that can cater to any drinker.
- Sea Bream Kamameshi: The other main attraction is the kamameshi. There are quite a variety of kamameshi dishes on the menu. I was torn between the regular options and the seasonal ones, but I went with the classic sea bream kamameshi. It had the perfect balance of flavors, not too light or too heavy. The carrots and fried vegetables were comforting, and the sea bream was tender and flavorful. The satisfaction level really depends on whether you order this dish or not. Seriously, I can't say anything bad, so you must order the kamameshi. They even make onigiri with the leftovers, so even if you're full, you should definitely order it.
It was a wonderful restaurant that added color to my local drinking experience. Thank you for the delicious meal.
Epilogue:
The seating times are fixed, and the service speed is not particularly fast, so there may be some waiting periods. But the satisfaction level with the food and drinks is very high. Especially the kamameshi is a taste that Japanese people love. I think this is the perfect first stop for a night out in Shijo. If you love kamameshi and sake, definitely check it out. Thank you for the delicious meal.
