ハラミ串
[Overall Review] Located near Nijo Station in Kyoto, this takoyaki shop also functions as an izakaya, open from 3 pm. The takoyaki here has large chunks of octopus and a creamy texture inside, reminiscent of high-quality Bechamel sauce. With various seasonings like curry and ponzu available, sharing with friends is a great idea. Enjoying freshly made takoyaki with beer or highball is a blissful experience. Much tastier than takeout.
[A Detailed Review] A takoyaki shop near Keihan Line's Nijo Station. Closed during the day, but open from 3 pm onwards. While most takoyaki shops have names like "Hacchan," this one is called "Shichichan," perhaps named after the area. I happened to pass by on my way home via Nijo Station on the Keihan Line, so I decided to check it out. The shop has a counter with 6 seats surrounding the grill and 2 tables. When I visited after 8 pm, there were already 9 customers. The shop is run by the husband in charge of grilling and a woman assisting him. There is no background music, just a TV playing. They also offer takeout, which seemed quite popular. The shop has a retro Showa vibe with Orion Beer-like lanterns and a stove with a kettle. The menu includes various flavored takoyaki and smoked dishes, along with some light side dishes. They serve a range of drinks like beer, shochu, and highball. It feels more like an izakaya than a typical takoyaki shop. I ordered the basic takoyaki, a smoked dish assortment, a highball (500 yen), and a sweet potato shochu (Shirokiri, 400 yen).
- Takoyaki (8 pieces, 400 yen): I chose the "sweet" flavor with toppings of green onions and cheese. The takoyaki had large octopus chunks and a creamy texture inside, very delicious when hot. The batter was creamy and smooth, almost like eating Bechamel sauce. It's definitely best enjoyed hot.
- Smoked Dish Assortment (3 items, 750 yen): They mentioned it would take some time to prepare as they smoke it individually. The assortment included smoked duck breast, cheese, half-boiled egg, and potato salad on the side. A fun lineup of items. The duck breast had a chewy texture with a strong smoky flavor. The cheese had a nice smoked taste. The half-boiled egg had a gooey yolk, very tasty. The potato salad with onions was pretty standard.
[Final Thoughts] While the takoyaki would still be delicious for takeout, the creamy texture is best experienced when hot. The quality of the takoyaki is high, but the creamy deliciousness is truly brought out when eaten fresh. The total bill for today was 2050 yen. Thank you for the meal.
