Located between Ichijoji and Shugakuin along Takano River in Sakyo Ward, there is a specialty steak and tonkatsu restaurant called "Rashomon". The exterior sign above the entrance features a large Hannya mask, which makes a strong impression (the connection between this Hannya mask and the restaurant's name "Rashomon" remains a mystery). Inside, the warm lighting creates a cozy atmosphere. There is a counter in front of the cooking area, as well as several four-person tables. Looking through the glass at the back, you can see a small Japanese garden, indicating attention to detail in the interior design.
I visited the restaurant on a weekday at 6 pm and was the first group to arrive. Despite the impressive exterior and spacious interior, there was only one head chef, which was a bit surprising. After reading the restaurant's website and a few reviews, I learned that the focus is not only on the powerful exterior but also on the bold flavors of the dishes. One highlight is their commitment to black wagyu steak. Rather than focusing on specific breeds or marbling, the chef personally selects high-quality meat based on his own criteria and serves it to customers, reminiscent of the philosophy of the high-end steak restaurant Yamazaki in Kyoto (I have not had the chance to visit Yamazaki yet, so this information is based on reviews). Another specialty is tonkatsu, with three types of pork available. In addition to tonkatsu, they also offer "ton teki". Customers can choose between a set meal or a "zen" meal, which includes small side dishes and dessert. The restaurant is quite unique in focusing on both steak and tonkatsu, so I recommend trying the "Hannya Zen" (4200 yen) where you can enjoy both a small steak (50g) and a ton of pork fillet (120g) at the same time.
On this day, there were two of us, so we ordered the Hannya Zen and the most expensive Okinawan Agu pork loin ton teki meal. The steak was a 2cm thick sirloin, served with garlic rice on a small plate. It had just the right amount of fat, with a good balance of lean meat texture and tenderness from the marbling, different from the overwhelming marbled wagyu beef. The pork fillet tonkatsu exceeded my expectations, especially in terms of the quality of the meat itself. I often eat tonkatsu, but this was a completely different experience. The pork fillet was quite thick and delicious, with a clear sweetness of the pork meat. The Agu pork ton teki was also excellent in terms of meat quality and cooking perfection.
In addition to the powerful main dishes, the side dishes and desserts are also distinctive. One highlight is the dishes and dessert made with black beans. The set meal includes simmered black beans and black bean miso soup, while the zen meal includes a black bean topped pudding (the Hannya Zen also includes black bean natto). The carefully cooked black beans have a gentle and elegant flavor, especially the black bean miso soup. Other items like tofu made with nagaimo and the salad (dressing) served with the main dish also show the restaurant's attention to detail in every dish. Although the restaurant has few reviews on food review websites, it may be a hidden gem, and I have already decided to revisit this wonderful restaurant.
