I had lunch here for the first time. I ordered the Oroshi Bukkake Udon (510 yen) and Chikuwa Tempura (140 yen). It was great that the prices for 1 serving, 1.5 servings, and 2 servings were all the same, which is really nice for a college student. I was very happy to eat plenty of delicious udon with a good texture. Thank you for the meal.

Kamaage udon for 580 yen, comes with 2 servings. The noodles are free and have a smooth texture, but they might be better described as chewy rather than smooth. The noodles lack firmness, but their short length is their main feature. They are easy to slurp in one bite, yet you might also want to savor them a bit longer. The dipping sauce is on the sweeter side, with a strong soy sauce flavor that is delicious.

A taste that makes you want to come back again and again. I tried to go to a nearby Chinese soba restaurant or Aoi, but they were closed. I randomly walked into this place and ordered warm udon with tempura on top, along with inari sushi. The udon had a more homey flavor, less sweet than Kyoto-style udon. It was a taste that made me want to visit again. I would like to come back again. Thank you for the meal.

Udon restaurant near Kyoto University. The customers are mostly students. I had the Sagano set (curry udon, small rice, 3 pieces of fried chicken) for 900 yen, with an option to change the rice to a regular size for an extra 50 yen. It was a good deal, saving 210 yen compared to ordering separately. You can choose the noodle size as regular (1.0 serving), large (1.5 serving), or extra-large (2.0 serving). Most students seem to order the extra-large size. The curry udon has a thick broth and the noodles have a good texture. The taste is average. The fried chicken seems like it's pre-made. If you're looking for quantity over quality, this place is a good choice.

On Thursday at 13:30, I went to "Ajimi An" in Jingumarutamachi. It's a restaurant located in a place away from the station with few other dining options. There were about 3 customers who seemed to be students (possibly from Kyoto University). I ordered the "Beef Udon - Regular size (780 yen)". They offer the same price for a large portion (1.5 servings) or an extra-large portion (2.0 servings) as well. The dish arrived in 5 minutes. I took a bite and it was delicious. The udon noodles had a firm texture typical of Sanuki-style udon. While Kyoto udon is known for its soft texture, this place serves Sanuki-style udon. The broth was rich with the flavors of bonito and kelp, and the beef added a delicious touch. There was plenty of beef in the dish, and it was not the sweet and savory type. The prices are reasonable, making it a great udon spot for students and local residents. Thank you for the meal.

At lunchtime, this popular restaurant often has long lines of students and nearby construction workers. I had the set meal with kama-tama (udon noodles with a raw egg) and kakiage (mixed vegetable tempura) rice bowl. The udon noodles have a chewy texture that is a bit different from the usual firmness known as "koshi". The option for a free extra-large portion appeals to the target customers. The tempura had a good texture, although it may have been slightly overcooked. Nevertheless, it was delicious for the price. Opting for the extra-large portion would also offer good value for money.

Every year, my husband and I decide to spend our wedding anniversary in our favorite city, Kyoto. This year, we headed there again, just 4 days after our last visit (laughs). Upon arriving at Kyoto Station, we took a bus to our hotel, dropped off our luggage, and first visited Yoshida Shrine. The hustle and bustle of Yoshida Shrine, preparing for Setsubun, was beyond our imagination. There were so many food stalls lined up, more than I had ever seen before! Although there were tempting items, we resisted the urge to buy anything and decided to have a meal at a local Kyoto restaurant instead. We searched on Tabelog and found a udon shop within walking distance. We arrived about 10 minutes before opening time. Although the curtain was not yet up, the staff noticed us and kindly invited us in, saying "We're not quite ready yet, but please come inside as it's cold outside." The restaurant had table seating in the front and tatami seating in the back. Looking at the menu, we were pleasantly surprised by the reasonable prices! We ordered beer with oden and karaage as appetizers, followed by curry udon and mentaiko onigiri for me, and meat udon and inari sushi for my husband (prices are written in the photos). After the opening time of 11:30, customers started pouring in, and the table seating quickly filled up. The oden and karaage were flavorful, and my husband was in a good mood. We even ordered more beer halfway through (laughs). Although it was labeled as Sanuki udon, it was not as firm as I expected, making it easy to eat. The broth was also delicious. My husband commented, "I wish this place was near my workplace, I would come here every day" (laughs). We left the restaurant fully satisfied. Ease of reservation - Likelihood of revisiting: ★★★★☆ Thank you for the wonderful meal!

I walked about 700m northeast from Kenchikumaru-taicho Station to "Sanuki Udon Restaurant Ajimian" located there. It is situated in a residential area, with a layout that looks like a regular house that has been renovated. As it is near Kyoto University, many of the customers inside the restaurant seem to be students. I ordered the limited-time "hiyakake" for 390 yen and added two types of "tempura of your choice" for 180 yen. I mentioned that I did not need ginger. Although it is hiyakake, it has a strong flavor of bonito flakes rather than dried sardines. The green onions are already included, but with this broth, it might be just right to balance out the acidity of the bonito broth. The noodles have a slight twist and a good chewiness, making them delicious. The crunchy tempura, which is not greasy at all, is provided at the table. It goes well with the hiyakake. Thank you for the meal!

The noodles are firm and delicious. It's amazing that you can eat Sanuki udon like this even in Kyoto (^^)

When I first visited this place, I ordered the warm udon noodles and was disappointed by their lack of firmness. I wondered if this was really Sanuki udon. However, on my next visit, I tried the cold udon noodles and was pleasantly surprised. They had a good firmness to them, so I have been ordering cold udon ever since, even on cold days. One thing worth mentioning about this place is the delicious tempura. The freshly fried tempura is big, crispy, and very tasty. While the udon is decent, I would say that I come to this place mainly for the tempura. They offer a free large size (1.5 servings) and a free extra-large size (2 servings) for students. Depending on the time, they also provide additional services like tempura or eggs to students who visit after 1 pm. Overall, I think this place is great for students in the area.
