There is also a "Shin-Kyogoku" in Kawaramachi, but it used to be so prosperous that it was called "Nishijin-Kyogoku". This warm and friendly izakaya stands in the atmosphere of the former entertainment district "Nishijin-Kyogoku". I decided to visit in mid-December and when I opened the door, I was greeted by a veteran master and a hostess who were attentive to first-time customers across the counter. The regular customers who came later were also very friendly, creating an atmosphere that made me want to visit again. The interior of the restaurant is a small space with one counter and one table. The menu is extensive, ranging from various izakaya dishes to Western dishes such as spaghetti and omelette rice. I started with a large bottle of beer (700 yen) and then switched to draft beer (550 yen). The dishes I ordered were: - Napolitan (800 yen) - Rolled omelette (600 yen) - Fried chicken (650 yen) - Curry fried rice (600 yen) The Napolitan is made by stir-frying ingredients in a frying pan, adding plenty of ketchup, followed by fresh coffee and then red wine, and stir-frying vigorously over high heat. When I tried it with chopsticks, it had a homely and simple deliciousness. The rolled omelette was good, and the best dish was the curry fried rice. The atmosphere is friendly and easy to get used to, not overly noisy for a down-to-earth izakaya. The interior is decorated with black and white photographs of the old Nishijin-Kyogoku, and the elderly master is said to have experience in popular theater, making him good at customer service. All the dishes were delicious as izakaya dishes, and there were conversations across the counter, creating a fun time filled with the local atmosphere of Nishijin. I heard that the restaurant has been in business since the first year of Heisei era and will celebrate its 30th anniversary in two years. If you like izakayas that are not touristy and are interested in cozy little bars with character, be sure to visit the hidden gem "Okushokudokoro Tsukasa". They do not serve lunch and are open from 5:30 pm.
