Wearing masks and face shields, I was able to reunite with the female shop owner of Kitchen Hitosara after over a year on the last working day of 2020. The first question that came to mind was about the number of clocks in the shop, as there were various interesting clocks scattered around the place. From clocks that could be found in a grandmother's house to a giant golden alarm clock, the unique sense of style to pair a pendulum clock with two clocks that could be found in a train station is definitely characteristic of Hitosara-san. There was also a corner for homemade baked goods such as scones and bread, emitting a faintly sweet aroma. I plan to purchase some takeout items later. First, I would like to have my first beer at the new location. I indulged in a 4-seater table all to myself (or you could say I had the shop and the shop owner all to myself since it was practically empty). It seems that fewer people are drinking draft beer due to the circumstances, so I started with a bottle of "Heartland" beer. I was so happy to be able to drink beer at Hitosara-san again, that tears almost welled up in my eyes. I felt foolish for not being able to visit the new location for over a year, considering how important the place was to me. I left the food selection to the shop owner, asking for dishes that would go well with beer. The first items served were homemade focaccia and warm carrot and onion potage soup. The soup had a gentle and deeply flavorful taste that respected the ingredients, paired with a chewy and moist focaccia. As I chatted with the shop owner who was cooking just a few meters away at the counter, the beer kept flowing... The third item was an eggplant and tofu mousse with a Japanese-style dashi sauce that seemed to go well with sake. The fourth item was fried sardines and corn. The opened sardines were topped with plenty of corn, creating a creative tempura-like dish. It was so delicious that I wanted seconds! I ended up drinking several bottles of Heartland (small bottles?) before having an Asahi Super Dry (small bottle?) later on. The shop owner's stories were as entertaining as ever, keeping the alcohol flowing. The fifth item was a Western-style stew of minced meat and daikon radish. I even fulfilled my dream of drinking wine while eating at Hitosara-san. The delicious red wine had a moderate weight, but the amount served was too generous! (happily surprised) Normally, wine is served by the glass, but I ended up having several refills of bottled beer as chasers. The shop closes at 9 pm, but I ended up staying until around 9:30 pm. I purchased the scones and bread I had requested and left the shop with a lingering feeling. I apologize for overstaying and drinking too much, but I now know the distance between the station and the shop, so I will visit again on my day off the next day.
