It was a New Year's party at a study group meeting. The venue was Hanairin, which has become a regular choice lately. It's not a big restaurant, but it's cheap, delicious, and you can relax there. First, we had some appetizers. From left to right, there was foie gras, something like kamaboko, and gobo (burdock root) wrapped in fish cake. The foie gras was a first for me this winter! For sashimi, we had thick slices of yellowtail, sea bream, and tuna. There was also a dancing shrimp dish. The shrimp kept moving even after being eaten, which was a bit awkward but delicious. Next was a simmered dish with sea bream, turnips, taro, and pumpkin. The flavors were well infused, and the sea bream was tender. Then came the teriyaki dish. I thought the fish was yellowtail, but it was actually lighter in taste. It was accompanied by a spicy fish cake salad with mentaiko (seasoned cod roe) inside, giving a fun texture. And then there was the hot pot with various types of fish, shrimp, squid, chicken, and vegetables. The broth was incredibly delicious. Even though we had already eaten a lot, there was more to come. Next up was tempura, with a large shrimp and other items like eggplant, mountain vegetables, and a fish wrapped in shiso leaf. Finally, there was a steamed turnip dish with a large white fish inside, providing a satisfying end to the meal. With all the seafood dishes, I felt like I had replenished my body with quality protein. All this food, along with a glass of beer, cost only 2000 yen! It's really cheap and delicious here. We ate a lot, talked a lot, and had another fulfilling gathering.
