Yatsuhashi Experience: Originally, I preferred "smooth red bean paste," so I never bought Yatsuhashi for myself because everywhere I went, they only sold "grain red bean paste." However, I happened to come across a store in Arashiyama that sold smooth red bean paste Yatsuhashi, and I bought it. From that moment on, during my biannual stays in Kyoto (always on a long weekend), I would hire a taxi driver named T from Yasaka Taxi for the duration of my 3-day stay. He was born and raised in Kyoto and very knowledgeable about the city. One day, I asked him to stop by a store that sold smooth red bean paste Yatsuhashi, but he didn't know any. He took me to several stores that day, but none of them sold smooth red bean paste Yatsuhashi. He promised to research more for next time. On my next visit to Kyoto, T told me that it was very rare to find a store that sold smooth red bean paste Yatsuhashi. He found out that out of the 14 companies that make Yatsuhashi, only 2 of them sell smooth red bean paste Yatsuhashi. One of them was Nishio, located near Kiyomizu Temple where the famous Daisho-sensei often visits. It was an eye-opening experience for me, as I realized that smooth red bean paste Yatsuhashi is not a popular local treat in Kyoto. T also mentioned that Kyoto locals rarely eat Yatsuhashi and prefer smooth red bean paste over grain red bean paste, which is more popular among people from Kanto. I used to buy Yatsuhashi from Nishio before, but the elderly man who used to be there every day was no longer around due to old age. This made me feel a sense of loss, so I stopped going there. During this visit, after visiting Kanshundo, I explored the Gion shopping street on Shijo Street to kill time before checking in at Yuzuya Ryokan. I bought several types of Yatsuhashi from the main Nishio Yatsuhashi Gion store, and while walking along the Gion shopping street, I stumbled upon another store... the store was located underground and was long and narrow... and decided to go down to buy more Yatsuhashi to enjoy at home. The variety at this store was greater than the one at Gion Kita store (they even had chiffon cakes), but with only one staff member serving many customers, it took a long time to make a purchase, which was frustrating. If I were to buy regular Yatsuhashi, I would prefer the Gion Kita store. △□ Yatsuhashi - Nikki (5 pieces) 250 yen: Just for reference, the expiration date is October 16, while the ones I bought earlier at Gion Kita store were until October 18.
