It feels sinful. Well, it can't be helped for work reasons. Late at night in Kiyamachi is filled with Westerners. It's like a foreign country. Troublesome. Now, there's a place known for its curry udon since old times. A new store opened in front of Marutamachi City Hall, but is it even open? It's at that level. This place, on the other hand, has been running for a long time as a hidden gem! It had been a while (about 5 years), but it was good! If you're looking to have a late-night meal, be sure to come here!

I discovered a deep shop in Kiyamachi! A late-night eatery in Kyoto that is open until morning. You can drink alcohol and there is a wide variety of side dishes. The rice bowls at the end are all delicious. However, the interior of the shop gives off a sense of age. Let's visit with that in mind, or rather, understanding.

As the autumn season approaches, it's time to feel the cool breeze in the air. After a drinking party, I visited G-men for a late-night meal. It was my second visit, as I had been there once during my student days, but I don't remember much about it, haha. This time, I ordered the beef tendon udon. First, I took a sip of the broth. The generous beef tendon pieces blended nicely with the broth, but it was a bit too salty for my taste. The noodles were medium-thick with a soft texture typical of Kyoto-style noodles. I felt a nostalgic twinge of memories from the past. Thank you for the meal ⭐️

G-men, since when have I been here? This restaurant is open until morning, the food is reasonably tasty, and the staff are friendly, so I like it, but... I don't like the atmosphere of Kiyamachi at night, with the annoying young promoters around the area. Even though there is a police box nearby, there is no regulation at all, just a lot of talk. On a rainy weekday night, I went there for the first time in a long time. Oh! I like the grilled skirt steak at this place. Skirt steak... there is also a skirt steak bowl (I had it before), but the taste is a bit different. I prefer the skirt steak on the hot plate over the bowl. The texture is like medium rare, with a nice balance of flavors. The beef tendon udon... the udon here is thin but not too soft, with a subtle sweetness. The beef tendon is also tender. They are open until morning and have a variety of dishes (they also do delivery), and the staff are nice too (>_<). It's just the annoying promoters from other restaurants that bother me! There are plenty of good restaurants around, but in a way, they are obstructing the business (`へ´*)ノ

I had curry udon. It was quite traditional, but the broth was flavorful and it was quite delicious.

After drinking, this intensely hot curry udon really warms you up! It's hard to find the place, but it's a spot you'll want to visit again. The thin noodles in flavorful broth make for a delicious curry udon.

Perfect place for a late-night meal after drinking! This udon restaurant offers a wide variety of izakaya-style dishes and is located just a few minutes' walk from Gion Shijo Station. It may be a bit hard to find as it is tucked away in a narrow alley. The interior has more of an izakaya vibe rather than a traditional udon restaurant. I think this was our third stop of the night, but I was quite drunk and my memory is a bit fuzzy. Anyway, I started with a beer refill, priced at 400 yen, which is pretty standard. The menu is posted all over the restaurant, making it difficult to decide what to order. They have dishes like karaage and teppanyaki, perfect for pairing with beer. Among them, the curry udon seems to be a popular choice. Since we were at an udon restaurant, I decided to order the curry udon with pork topping (650 yen). It was already past midnight, but who cares about calories! The homemade udon noodles were delightfully chewy and delicious. They were thin but satisfying to eat. The thick and spicy curry soup with a hint of spice added a nice touch. In my tipsy state, this hot and spicy curry udon was the perfect choice. Even though I was quite full, I still had some beer left, so I ordered some gyoza as well. I always struggle to eat noodles and beer together, so I end up with leftover beer. But who cares about calories! The gyoza had a strong garlic flavor, which I loved. It was the perfect way to end the night at this izakaya in Kyoto! It seems they are open until 7 am, which is quite rare for a restaurant in Kyoto. I definitely want to visit this place again!

A small izakaya in a back alley visited by four people. The place has a cozy atmosphere with seating for four at two tables and a counter. The izakaya menu is typical, with a variety of side dishes and rice bowls. The recommended dish is the curry udon, but the spice level was milder than expected. It's a decent place to have a casual drink and meal, although it's not outstanding.

This restaurant is open until 7:00 in the morning! It seems to be popular for our company's after parties. I can't handle late nights like I used to, so after having a drink at another place earlier in the evening, I came here to try the curry udon that my colleagues had recommended. I arrived right at the opening time of 7:00 pm since we started drinking early. I was the first customer. I was tempted to try the curry udon right away, but decided to start with a dish of simmered tendon. The tender tendon was delicious, and although I wanted to try more dishes, I didn't want to miss out on the curry udon. I ordered the main dish instead. The soup was rich and flavorful, with a nice kick of spices that I enjoyed as someone who prefers a bit of heat. The noodles were thin and slightly soft, cooked just right. Living in Kyoto for a while, I've come to appreciate this style of noodles. The menu is extensive, so I look forward to coming back when I have a bigger appetite.

Friends were having a gathering on the upper floor, but I didn't feel like drinking anymore and just wanted to have some ramen. When I mentioned I was going downstairs to eat ramen, they all decided to join me. We went downstairs, but one of them suddenly said they were feeling sick and left without paying (although we collected the money later). We sat at the counter and ordered some dote-yaki and karaage. Two of us didn't want to drink anymore, but one of the ladies was still drinking beer. I ordered something called "tsukemen yakisoba" and the other guy ordered curry udon. Everything was pretty tasty and it seemed like this place was popular. We were all pretty drunk, but the food was good. I don't remember how much we paid, but it was around 1000-1999 yen.

I was feeling a bit hungry, so I went out for some late-night udon. I was craving the same udon I had with my senior colleague over 15 years ago as a post-drinking meal, so I searched for it and I think I found the right place. Although they didn't have the same udon with dried kelp and pickled plum on the menu, I was able to recreate it with toppings. The gentle taste of Kansai-style broth was perfect after drinking. I savored every drop. It brought back memories of the fun business trip with my senior colleague. I think I'll reach out to him and plan another drinking session soon.

This place is a noodle izakaya that specializes in curry udon, but also offers a variety of teppanyaki and izakaya dishes. They stay open late, making it a great spot for a second or third round of drinks. I stopped by after eating and drinking at a nearby restaurant for my first round. I started with a sweet potato shochu and ordered tonpei as a snack. The tangy sauce was a refreshing complement to the shochu. I was already a bit tipsy, but the shochu went down smoothly. As I drank, I found myself craving more snacks, so I looked at the menu on the wall. There was a strange dish called "tsukemen yakisoba," where you dip yakisoba in dashi broth. I was intrigued and decided to try it, despite the odd concept. The yakisoba was served on a hot iron plate and the noodles were firm and crispy. When dipped in the dashi, they softened and absorbed the flavors. It was a unique and delicious experience. The noodles had a great texture and absorbed the subtle dashi flavor well. The addition of bonito flakes added a nice aroma and enhanced the overall taste. This tsukemen yakisoba has the potential to become addictive, and this place is definitely a must-visit for a second round of drinks after a night out. My overall rating for this visit in March 2015 was 3.5.

Located in Kyoto, in the Nakagyo Ward, on the street of Kiya-machi, just above Shijo, is G-men (G-men), a hidden udon and sake bar in the alley. They serve homemade noodles and special dashi udon, along with 28 teppanyaki dishes. It's a 5-minute walk from Kawaramachi Station on the Hankyu Kyoto Line. They are open from 7:00 PM to 3:00 AM (last order at 2:30 AM), and they serve food until 7:00 AM. They are open every day of the year and have 14 seats. After visiting the pork soup shop Gion Adachi-ya in Kiyomoto-cho, we were guided to the next chosen restaurant. The cold nights in Kyoto at this time of year really make you feel nostalgic. Walking between places helps to sober up and stay awake. The chosen restaurant had a nostalgic feel, serving udon and teppanyaki. I couldn't help but wonder why it was called G-men, but I didn't have the energy to ask. The interior had a counter and table seating. The four of us sat at a table. Two of us ordered udon. Even though I had just eaten pork soup udon, I regretted it, but it couldn't be helped. I couldn't handle a pork cutlet bowl like one of the others in our group. Since we didn't know when the curtain would fall, I decided to just have a drink and see how things went. But alcohol made me sleepy, so I ended up having a warm cup of tea. I ordered hot oolong tea for 200 yen. It was comforting on such a cold night. We were recommended the curry udon and zaru udon by the other two, so we shared a bit of each. They were so kind. Since just having tea looked a bit lonely, I took a picture of the person in our group who had the heaviest dish, a pork cutlet bowl for 750 yen. It was finished with a sweet sauce. There was a kettle and a mini brazier on the table. The interior had a calm atmosphere. The restaurant had a decent number of customers late at night. It's great to have a place open until morning. When the organizer suggested it was time to go, that was the end of the night for us. Maybe I should have had a bowl here as well (laughs). Thank you to the local reviewer who found this Kyoto restaurant. Until we meet again, stay well!

A wonderful restaurant located on a charming street near Shijo. This place focuses on teppanyaki and udon dishes, but also has a lively izakaya atmosphere. It's open until 7 am, just like the famous "Midnight Diner". It's convenient for early risers, night shift workers, and those coming from all-nighters. While they don't have a morning menu, it's still a great spot for a fifth round. The restaurant is popular among young customers, with energetic and friendly staff. However, the katsudon was surprisingly sweet, which didn't sit well after a night of drinking. We left around 2 am, realizing the trains had stopped running. We took a taxi back to Osaka, where the driver kindly woke us up. As we arrived at the Expo Park, I couldn't help but feel like the Tower of the Sun was mocking me.

After Adachi family's Gion Butajiru-ya, we crossed the Kamogawa River once again and headed back to the opposite bank in the Kiyamachi area. Going back and forth between the right and left banks of the Kamogawa River, with guidance from the knowledgeable Gropop-san about the left bank information, we arrived at another spot. In Kyoto's bustling district, there are about 25 numbered alleys between Kiyamachi and Pontocho. As you casually stroll through "Roji," you can find quite a few promising shops. This place, located in alley number 15, is one of those shops. The interior features a counter on the left and two tables on the right, with a cozy layout. Despite the late hour, the place was quite lively, with a young clientele. It's interesting how the customer base in Kyoto's entertainment district changes drastically on the left and right banks of the Kamogawa River. Roughly speaking, the area from Kawaramachi to Pontocho is frequented by students, while Gion is more popular among working adults. By the way, the area around Shinkyogoku and Teramachi to the west of Kawaramachi is a hotspot for high school students and school trips. I wanted to order sake, but the menu only had three options: Kizakura, Tsukigakure Kyoto no Izumi, and Jozanju. So, I played it safe and switched to a Black Kirishima on the rocks (\420). Looking at the pop menu, I was drawn to the description of "using homemade noodles, 10 types of spices, and a special udon dashi," so I ordered the regular Curry Udon (\600). You can add beef, pork, or chicken for an additional \50. This time, it was more like a "curry-flavored udon," with toppings of fried bits, chopped green onions, and simplicity. The noodles were thin and slightly flat, with a soft texture and lacking the chewiness of Sanuki udon, more like the "gentle" type of Kyoto udon. The curry broth was not overpowering, but a classic and well-made one, simply delicious. With the turmeric effect of "eating turmeric's power," it also helps prevent hangovers. A long-running establishment open until 7:00 in the morning. Definitely a place to keep in mind in this area. PS: As expected, is this place's BGM a hit?!

Going back and forth between Kiyamachi and Gion. Once again, following the flow of a meetup, we found ourselves back in Gion, then Kiyamachi, and back to Gion. R-san expressed a desire for noodles, so I relied on information that even late at night, we should be able to find a place serving noodles. And indeed, we found a place open until early morning! Not only that, but they served a variety of noodles, rice bowls, and other dishes, making it a convenient spot. As usual, I opted for cold zaru udon to refresh myself in between rounds of drinks. Though I must admit, I also had a sweet potato shochu on the side ;) On the other hand, R-san, who initially wanted noodles, surprisingly went for a katsudon! Quite a bold move (laughs). By the end of my udon, I took on the challenge and finished about half of R-san's katsudon (ultimately exceeding 3000 calories for the day). The katsudon had a unique presentation, not like the usual egg-topped style, but rather with the cutlet placed on top. This seems to be a rare sight in Kyoto. The broth was surprisingly sweet, which seems to be a Kyoto specialty, as seen in the sweet miso soup earlier. This experience allowed me to show a new side of Kyoto to our friends from Fukuoka and Osaka. It was a first for me as well. Since that day, I have been using this restaurant frequently. It's a very convenient spot.

I was already trying to go home, but my senpai from the bar dragged me to a late-night open restaurant. The menu was full of recommended curry udon dishes, so I chose the Tsukimi Tororo Curry Udon. Before that, we made a toast with a highball. How many toasts was that this day? The spicy curry soup was so good that I couldn't resist drinking it, even though I shouldn't. But once I added the rice and ate it, it was just perfect. Going bar hopping on a weekday and ending with curry udon at a late-night restaurant... Is it a good thing or a bad thing? But I understand why it was recommended. They also have a variety of teppanyaki dishes, so I might try that next time for a lighter ending. The fact that the ashtrays were like fire pots was also cool, truly Kyoto's style. There are so many unknown places in this area.
