The weather has warmed up, so I decided to have some iced coffee after a long time. Just a 5-minute walk from Demachiyanagi Station, there is a classic coffee shop with a green and white roof. The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans wafting outside the shop caught my attention and I couldn't resist going in. It was a cozy and welcoming local cafe where I could take a break and relax.

Old coffee shop located near Demachiyanagi Station in Sakyo-ku, Kyoto. The current owner is keeping the shop running across generations, with the motto of "preserving the past as much as possible." Smoking is allowed, so please be aware of that. When the shop is not busy, they try to provide seating in the corner for non-smokers. There is a sign asking customers to get permission before taking photos inside the shop. I asked the owner for permission and then took a picture. The interior of the shop, including the walls and lighting, exudes a charming and nostalgic atmosphere. I ordered a Vienna coffee (500 yen) which was delicious. I have a weakness for stylish vintage shops like this. In Kyoto, there are several coffee shops striving to maintain this kind of atmosphere, and this shop is equally precious. People who spent their student days around here in the distant past visit to reminisce about the old times. According to them, "this place remains the same as it was in the past." It's not a museum, but a living entity that encapsulates time.

I found a cozy old-fashioned café called Gogo on my way from Demachiyanagi Station to Kyoto University. The café has a vintage feel, with a friendly lady running the place. I sat at the counter and ordered a hot coffee. The café is small, with three tables and six seats at the counter. The lady brewed my coffee using a siphon at the counter. When I mentioned that the café seemed to have a long history, she said it's actually relatively new, about 60 years old. In Kyoto, a café with a 60-year history is still considered quite new. She told me that the café was opened by the previous owner in 1963. During our conversation, the lady and some regular customers recommended other old cafés in the area, such as Hanafusa Coffee in Tennocho, Smart Coffee in Teramachi Sanjo, Rokuyosha in Kawaramachi Sanjo, and Inoda Coffee in Shijo Karasuma. They also mentioned the "Big Three" of Shijo Kawaramachi: Tsukiji, Soiree, and Francois, as other old cafés. Oh, I forgot to mention the price of the coffee. It was 500 yen and I got change back.

On Friday at 4:30 PM, I went to "Gogo" in Demachiyanagi. I love the exterior of this place. The retro vibe can only be achieved by a shop with history. There is a small, old roaster placed like an art piece, and it seems to be still in operation as it holds coffee beans inside. The interior is even more retro than I imagined, but it's not just old - it's also stylish and well-maintained. Antique items like a pillar clock and a telephone are scattered throughout the shop, giving off a lovely atmosphere. I ordered the "Blend Coffee (400 yen)" and they brewed it slowly with a siphon. It arrived after 10 minutes. One sip. Delicious. It had a nice bitterness and a strong flavor. I had tried three different coffees from different shops that day, and it made me realize once again how different coffees can be. They also took orders from customers and operated the small roaster in the shop. A wonderful place. Kyoto, with shops like this everywhere, is truly wonderful. Thank you for the meal.

Last time I came to Kyoto and took a city bus to Demachiyanagi, I saw a familiar and nostalgic cafe that hasn't changed at all. It's a cafe I visited as part of my exploration of Kyoto's traditional cafes back in 2002. At that time, there was an elderly master running the cafe. Now, I wonder if it's his daughter who has taken over, continuing to run the cafe and preserve her father's legacy. Sitting at the counter, memories flooded back, almost bringing tears to my eyes. The daughter asked me if I wanted boiled eggs or bananas with my morning set, and that simple question brought back more memories. The thick, fluffy toast with plenty of margarine, the unsweetened toast cut into three pieces, and the sweet bananas alternating between bites - it all tasted just as good as I remembered. The warm banana was a perfect way to start the day, not too cooling like citrus fruits in this season. And to top it off, a complimentary second cup of coffee for just 200 yen. As I sat at the counter, I couldn't help but make eye contact with the daughter, who was busy working. It felt like a scene from a TV show as I kept turning my head towards her. This visit made me realize that my past exploration of traditional cafes was truly a valuable experience. The quiet, classic cafe was still thriving and I felt grateful for that.

At the beginning of the year, I've been too busy to dine out, so here's a review from last month. I decided to visit Gogo, a retro café near Ginkaku-ji Temple, for breakfast before heading there. The café is located a 2-minute walk from Demachiyanagi Station on the Keihan Main Line. As soon as you walk in, you'll be greeted by a retro interior with red leather sofas and round chairs. Despite it being just past 9 am, the place was almost full, mostly with regular customers. I ordered a fluffy egg sandwich for ¥550 and a blend coffee for ¥400. The egg sandwich had a nice texture, but the flavor was a bit bland, so I added some salt. I remember the coffee being meticulously brewed with a siphon by the owner, but I forgot the taste. It was a small café, and I quickly finished my meal and left as there was a constant flow of customers. I wish I could have stayed a bit longer and enjoyed a more relaxed atmosphere. The coffee shop "Gogo" in Demachiyanagi has a nostalgic atmosphere from the outside. I happened to stop by for a break and entered. Inside, there were a few regular customers. The owner, a woman, provided friendly and efficient service. Smoking is allowed inside, so it may not be suitable for those who dislike cigarettes, but that's also part of the charm of a traditional coffee shop!

A must-visit café for coffee shop lovers! ☕️ The quiet atmosphere of the shop allowed me to relax and enjoy my time. However, please note that it is a smoking-permitted establishment, so those sensitive to cigarette smoke should be cautious. They regularly ventilate the space, so their COVID-19 measures are top-notch! The cream coffee was delicious!! I'm looking forward to trying their morning menu next time!

Let's relax in the afternoon in Kyoto at "Gogo"! Located a little towards Kyoto University from Demachiyanagi, this cafe has a cute and cool exterior. The interior has a calm atmosphere and is lovely. After looking at the menu, I decided on my order in advance! "Cream Soda" for 600 yen. The glass is packed with ice cream! This cream soda with so much ice cream is a first for me! The slightly rich syrup has a flavorful taste and the color is very beautiful. The vanilla ice cream is milky and light, but also delicious. It's nice to relax while watching TV in this retro and lovely shop. This time I had the cream soda, but next time I would like to try their own roasted coffee.

It was around 1:30 in the afternoon when I visited this shop. Located just a short walk from Demachiyanagi Station, the sweet aroma of coffee fills the air, likely because they sell their own freshly roasted coffee every day. Unfortunately, the coffee jelly I was looking for was already sold out, as indicated at the entrance. The small shop was bustling with regular customers. There was a student-looking customer working on a laptop at the counter, and the clientele seemed younger compared to the retro cafes I have visited in Kyoto before. The interior, with its worn sepia tones, exudes a nostalgic atmosphere that feels comforting. A hot blend coffee costs 400 yen and is meticulously brewed using a siphon. The deep roasted coffee is robustly bitter and delicious, not conforming to current trends but offering a solid coffee experience. The Wiener coffee ordered by my friend also looked delicious. It was nice to see chocolates placed on the tables for customers to enjoy freely. It's no wonder there are many regulars here. I would like to come back someday to try the morning set that includes bananas.

This time, I came to Gogo, a famous cafe in Demachiyanagi, Kyoto. The small shop has walls with emphasized patterns, which I think were hand-drawn by craftsmen. Surprisingly, the owner was younger than me, and she looked lovely in her traditional Japanese attire. She spoke in Kyoto dialect, which I found charming. The coffee, with milk and sugar, was fragrant, smooth, and delicious. I envy the locals who can visit this cozy cafe regularly. I definitely want to come back here again!

A short walk from Demachiyanagi Station in Kyoto, you'll find the charming Showa retro cafe "Kissa Gogo". The eye-catching logo design on the sign and unique displays draw you in. Inside, the classic red leather sofas and chairs give off a traditional coffee shop vibe. The retro decor, including stylish sugar pots, adds to the nostalgic atmosphere. Kissa Gogo's coffee is a highlight, brewed meticulously with a siphon. Pair it with their egg sandwich, a simple yet delicious treat. The cafe attracts a mix of business people, locals, and tourists looking to relax with a post-meal coffee. Chatting with the owner, I learned that the cafe has been a local favorite for 57 years. With coffee shop hopping becoming a trend, Kissa Gogo is a popular spot worth visiting in Kyoto for a leisurely coffee break.

After eating lunch, I visited this place and sat at the counter towards the back. I ordered a melon soda (600 yen) and a coffee jelly (350 yen). The coffee jelly was a bit bitter, but when I added syrup it became sweeter. The melon soda had a generous amount of ice on top. I had to start by eating the ice first! The seating arrangement allowed me to hear everyone's conversations, yet for some reason, it felt cozy! I plan to come back someday to try their morning menu!

Old-fashioned coffee shop where time flows slowly and you can savor your coffee (apparently you can get refills too!). The selection of manga they have is unique and you can feel the message from the staff. As someone who prefers coffee shops over cafes, I decided I want to come back here next time.

I went to Kyoto early in the morning on the weekend for some errands. Since I left without having breakfast, I got off at Demachiyanagi Station and went to a nearby restaurant. The place had a retro atmosphere that still retained the feel of the Showa era. The small interior had a counter and three tables, with a striking siphon coffee maker. The morning set was 500 yen, which included a drink, toast, and a choice of boiled egg or banana. Looking around the shop, I noticed a mix of regular customers, elderly gentlemen and ladies, as well as students and tourists. Even as a solo female customer at the counter, the owner's mother greeted me with a kind smile. Sipping on the hot coffee, I felt like I was in a place where I could relax and enjoy a blissful time.

The location is convenient, near a bus stop. As for the drink, the cream soda is delicious, with a large scoop of ice cream on top. The soda itself is green and fantastic. I think it's worth the 600 yen. The atmosphere of the shop is calm and cozy, even though it's not very big.

I visited after 30 years. My son's wife is now running the place. The atmosphere hasn't changed much. The coffee made with a siphon is delicious!
