2023 Kyoto Souvenir #2: Taneoka Shoten Walnut and Almond Senbei Mochi. My girlfriend, who used to work at a skin care company, started her own Senbei Mochi shop. When you warm it up in a toaster, it becomes crispy. The shape and size of the Senbei Mochi are just right! #TaneokaShoten #SenbeiMochi #WalnutSenbei #AlmondSenbei #KyotoSouvenir

Located close to Karasuma Oike Station, on Kurumayacho Street, is a famous Japanese confectionery shop. It took me three years to finally visit! However, it seems like many traditional Kyoto sweet shops have 3 or 4 days off a week. Even when I have free time in Kyoto, it's not easy to visit them. I finally made it here with determination and persistence! Laughing.

It is a specialty store for "senbei" (rice cracker filled with sweet bean paste). I didn't know it was located in Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto. The senbei skin is made with rice flour. It is crispy and moist in the mouth, and delicious. The walnut and peanut flavors were also delicious, but the classic senbei was the best. It has a refined sweetness. They also have ice cream senbei.

Located in Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto City, this shop specializes in making "Nakamise" (filling) for traditional Japanese sweets. The "regular Nakamise" uses only Shiga prefecture-grown mochi rice flour. I decided to take a break here because it suddenly got hot. There are chairs and small tables along the walls. The cute-sized treat fits perfectly in the palm of your hand. Although it was a bit challenging to eat as a sandwich, I enjoyed the fragrant and delicious flavors. The crispy outer layer, chewy mochi, perfectly sweet red bean paste, and refreshing ice cream-like filling left me feeling refreshed. Despite the wide variety of items, this mysterious shop has a calming atmosphere.

Kyoto souvenirs are quite difficult to choose. I was thinking of buying them somewhere else, but after researching and finding this place, I decided to come here. It's fun to watch them fill the anko in the monaka right in front of you. I bought a set with various flavors to enjoy later, and also bought a single piece to eat on the way home. The combination of the fragrant peanuts and the monaka is amazing. It's great that you can easily buy them here.

I decided to send some Japanese sweets to my sister in Kanto, and chose some Kyoto-style wagashi. I picked a unique variety of monaka, which I think she will enjoy. I got two sets of 8 monaka, each with 4 different flavors, to put in a box for her. I also bought 4 different flavors for myself to enjoy at home. When I went to pay, they offered me some coffee or other drinks to have in the store. I decided to have a hot coffee, made with coffee beans from Circus Coffee. It was delicious. We also tried the monaka and ice monaka while sitting in. The staff were very nice, and I would love to visit this store again. When I got home, I tried the walnut monaka and regular monaka. The walnut monaka had a harder shell than I expected, really looking like a walnut! The balance of sweetness between the red bean paste and walnut inside was perfect. They mentioned that the monaka can last for 2-3 days, but for a crispy texture, it's best to eat it on the same day. They also said it's okay to warm it up in the oven.

I finally visited this place that I've been wanting to go for a long time. They offer zenzai (sweet red bean soup) and drinks for dine-in, but my main reason for coming here was the nut-filled senbei (rice cracker). They have unique flavors like peanut and walnut. The nuts are caramelized and wrapped in a senbei shell. They are bite-sized and have a great combination of nutty texture, caramel sweetness, and crispy senbei. It's fun to experience the changing textures in your mouth. These nut-filled senbei are something you don't see often. They also make a nice little gift. Thank you for the meal.

First Visit 2022012 (No.4132) 1. Purpose of Visit - This is my first visit to Kyoto in three years since October 2019, and I chose this shop as one of the places to gather information, ranging from long-established shops from the Muromachi period to new shops that seem to be popular in the 2020s. 2. Shop Information - Genre on Tabelog: Japanese sweets - Opened on June 5, 2020 - A company that has been making mochi skin in Kyoto since 1947 started a mochi sweets shop in front of the factory - Business hours: 11:00-17:00 - Closed on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays 3. Crowdedness and Atmosphere on the Day - Visited around 14:20 on a weekday, with no other customers before or after - The interior has a nostalgic Showa retro atmosphere 4. Customer Service - Standard service as per the manual 5. Purchased Items - Peanut, Walnut, Almond - Each for 250 yen These are mochi skins resembling peanuts, walnuts, and almonds, filled with a unique sweet bean paste! The crispy texture of the skin is amazing, a true testament to the quality. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to try them, but I'm curious about their ice cream blended with three types of milk in a golden ratio, their homemade gyuhi, and their carefully crafted coarse sweet bean paste sandwiched in the "Ice Cream Mochi." I would like to visit this shop again as a resting place during my Kyoto exploration. Thank you for the meal. [Pre. 02]

When I went to Kyoto, I received a gift of "Taneoka Shoten Kyoto Manju" from my friend in Kyoto. "Taneoka Shoten" has been making manju seeds for 75 years. They specialize in making manju seeds, supply them to Japanese confectionery shops, and support many Japanese confectionery shops in Kyoto. In June 2022, they opened "Taneoka Shoten Kyoto Manju" as a manju specialty store in Karasuma Oike, Kyoto. The manju has a rich paste and a mildly sweet red bean paste, creating a deep flavor. At this store, you can purchase manju that preserves traditional techniques and flavors while adding new flavors. [Japanese Confectionery from Taneoka Shoten Kyoto Manju] *Comments are written on the photo. ◆Assorted 4 types of manju ☆Tanejitsu Peanuts ☆Tanejitsu Almonds ☆Tanejitsu Walnuts ☆Regular manju ◎When you open the box, you will find the three main types of "Tanejitsu Manju" and the traditional manju filled with red bean paste. The manju seeds are freshly baked by hand, and the red bean paste has a strong azuki bean flavor with a mild sweetness, making it delicious. It is a perfect Japanese confectionery for souvenirs from Kyoto. Thank you for the meal.

After having a leisurely lunch, I decided to stop by "Taneka Shoten Kyoto Senbei" to buy some souvenirs. I parked my car at a nearby coin parking and walked to the shop. Taneka Shoten has been making senbei seeds for 75 years, specializing in producing senbei seeds and supplying them to traditional Japanese sweets shops, supporting many of Kyoto's traditional confectionery shops. In June 2022, they opened a specialty shop called "Taneka Shoten Kyoto Senbei" in Karasuma Oike, Kyoto. The senbei here has a deep flavor with a rich paste and a mildly sweet bean paste. They also offer a cute-looking senbei called "Tanemitsu" that adds a new flavor while preserving the traditional techniques and taste. The carefully selected ingredients used to make the senbei seeds include two types: the "regular senbei" made with only mochi rice flour, baked to have a rich aroma, and the "nutty senbei" made by kneading crushed walnuts, almonds, and cashews into mochi rice flour dough for a flavorful finish. The bean paste is made from carefully cooked Hokkaido red beans, specially ordered by Taneka. Now, let's start choosing. Since the classic "regular senbei" can be purchased online, I decided to buy the visually interesting "Tanemitsu" series (1 piece for 250 yen) to take home. I couldn't pass up the "walnut" from the shop-only series. I also bought several of the "peanut" and "almond" from the series. While waiting for them to be wrapped, I decided to try the shop-only "ice senbei" for 350 yen. The crispy senbei, along with flavorful ice cream, homemade gyuhi, and carefully selected coarse bean paste, create a gentle harmony of flavors in the ice senbei. It's cold and delicious. The waiting time flies by. Once I got home, I spread out the Tanemitsu and had a tea time. I started with the "peanut." The peanut shell is well done and quite amusing. The taste of peanut butter and the perfect amount of salt enhances the sweetness of the bean paste, making it delicious. Next, I tried the "almond." The lingering fragrance of almond butter pairs perfectly with the bean paste and nut seeds. Equally delicious. Lastly, I tried the shop-only "walnut." The cute walnut shell is nicely done. The bittersweet caramelized walnuts complement the gentle sweetness of the bean paste perfectly. With whole walnut pieces inside, you can also enjoy a crunchy texture. It's quite interesting. I compared them one by one, and each has its unique charm. There are plenty of traditional Kyoto souvenirs to choose from, but bringing a slightly different Kyoto souvenir like this could spark some interesting conversations. Thank you for the delicious treats.

I visited thinking it was unusual to have nuts in a monaka. The shop was small, and the service was very polite. I bought a box with two of each of the four varieties. The regular monaka had a delicious skin and the red bean paste was light and easy to eat. The walnut, almond, and peanut flavors combined well with the red bean paste, and I ended up eating them all quickly.

The green exterior is lovely♪ The ice cream has a nice fragrance. The anko (sweet red bean paste) is delicious. The combination of refreshing vanilla ice cream and square-shaped mochi was very tasty. However, I quickly finished it and felt that around 250 yen would be a fair price. I think I finished it quickly because the ice cream melted and dripped a lot. The round mochi-filled one was cheaper, so I'll try that next time.

Established in the 22nd year of the Showa era, a wholesale shop specializing in mochi skin recently opened a physical store with an eat-in space in front of their factory. Intrigued by recommendations from Mairevi, I visited during a trip to Kyoto. I stopped by to purchase souvenirs for friends (and of course, for myself), but decided to also enjoy the eat-in experience. I tried the Tsukimi Monaka (330 yen) and the gentle green tea (120 yen). The Tsukimi Monaka consisted of warm mochi filled with red bean paste, sweet bean paste, and walnuts, all freshly baked. The mochi was crispy and fragrant - absolutely delicious! The green tea was also reasonably priced. For takeout, I got the assortment of 8 Monaka pieces (2000 yen), including peanut, almond, walnut, and regular flavors, each with a unique shape and individually wrapped in paper. The packaging was cute and sure to delight as a souvenir. Each flavor was delicious in its own way, with the nut butter and red bean paste combination being particularly outstanding. The size of each piece was also perfect. While all the flavors were tasty, I personally recommend starting with the freshly baked, crispy and fragrant Monaka at the eat-in space.

◆Location: 5-10 minutes walk from Karasuma Oike Station◆Food: Walnut Senbei ¥250, Ice Cream Senbei - Walnut Senbei: The crispy caramelized walnuts and chunky red bean paste are delicious. The shape is cute, resembling a walnut. - Ice Cream Senbei: The ice cream has a strong milk flavor and a refreshing texture. It also includes red bean paste and mochi, providing a satisfying experience. I sometimes come back for more. It would also make a great gift.

It's like making and eating your own "monaka" (Japanese dessert). I thought about giving it as a souvenir, but I ended up trying the dessert ice cream with mochi inside. The ice cream was too impactful, so it felt more like ice cream. It was delicious though. The "monaka" seemed promising, so maybe next time!

During a 3km walk from the hotel to my destination, I came across a crowded place and decided to go in. It seemed like the ice cream-filled monaka was popular, but I opted for a regular monaka for 200 yen and added sweet bean paste as a topping. I also bought a peanut-shaped monaka, which was small and delicious. The peanut shape was cute and the peanuts inside were tasty. The monaka was a bit sticky on the lips.

In November 2020, during a perfect day for Kyoto sweets, I visited "Saori" for Mont Blanc and "(THISIS)SHIZEN" for dango and yokan. After that, I went to "Shukashoten" located between Karasuma Oike and Marutamachi. It's a shop specializing in monaka (wafer cake filled with sweet bean paste). I was planning to buy their "Shujitsu" series which combines monaka seeds, nuts, and sweet bean paste as a souvenir, but I couldn't resist their ice cream monaka which was only available in-store. I ordered the Ice Monaka for 302 yen. It consists of ice cream blended with three types of milk in a golden ratio, homemade gyuhi (soft rice cake), and Shukashoten's special grain sweet bean paste sandwiched together. I immediately tried it. I used to think that all monaka seeds were the same, but when it comes to a specialty monaka shop, the fragrance and texture are completely different. The combination of monaka seeds with ice cream, gyuhi, and sweet bean paste was perfect, and the refreshing taste of the ice cream prevented it from being too heavy. It was really delicious. Thank you for the meal!

After finishing lunch, I headed to this shop that I had been curious about after seeing it featured in a magazine at my regular hair salon. This shop is a physical store opened by a Kyoto-based shop that specializes in selling mochi skins. The shop had received good reviews, so I decided to check it out. Upon entering, I saw a display of gift sets with a slightly high price tag. To the left was a traditional Japanese-style counter where you can place orders and pay for your items. To the right were tables and chairs, giving the space a retro Showa-era vibe for customers to dine in. In the back was the workshop where artisans were making sweets. I ordered a mochi ice cream and roasted green tea to enjoy in the shop, and also got almond and walnut mochi for takeout. The mochi ice cream had a crispy and fragrant mochi skin with a light ice cream filling, topped with a layer of soft mochi and sweet red bean paste. It was delicious with the warm aroma of the roasted green tea. At one point, a staff member came out from the workshop with freshly baked mochi skins for us to try, which were even more crispy and flavorful. The almond mochi had almond butter, red bean paste, and almonds inside, while the walnut mochi had caramelized walnuts and a gentle sweetness from the red bean paste. Personally, I preferred the freshly made mochi ice cream in the shop over the takeout mochi, as the crispy and fragrant mochi skin was more enjoyable. I recommend trying the mochi ice cream in the shop for the best experience. Thank you for the meal!

A traditional rice cracker shop that has been in business for over 70 years in Kyoto has opened a physical store. They offer three types of crispy rice crackers made with Shiga Prefecture's mochi rice flour mixed with organic nuts, filled with special red bean paste, nut paste, and caramelized walnuts. The shapes of the crackers are cute and unique, and the store displays the traditional molds used for making the crackers. I tried their Ice Cream Rice Cracker, which is made with a blend of three types of milk, homemade sweet bean paste, and high-quality ice cream, all sandwiched together. The Almond Butter and Red Bean Rice Cracker was also delicious, with a perfect balance of flavors. They have a seating area inside the store, so you can enjoy your treats on the spot as well. It would make a great gift for someone special.

On Wednesday at 2:00 PM, I went to "Tanaka Shoten Kyoto Senbei" in Karasuma Oike. It is located right across from "Honke Owariya." This is a unique senbei (rice cracker) specialty store in Kyoto. I ordered the "Ice Senbei (280 yen)" and the "Iced Cafe Latte (220 yen)." I took a bite of the Ice Senbei. It was delicious. The creamy vanilla ice cream with a generous milk flavor paired perfectly with the chewy mochi texture. The sweet bean paste added just the right amount of sweetness, creating a well-balanced taste. Even the senbei skin had a fragrant and flavorful taste. When I looked into it, I found out that this store is a senbei specialty store established in 1947. Knowing this, I understood the high quality. I noticed a display of senbei skin molds under the counter. The Iced Cafe Latte was also reasonably priced at 220 yen. The coffee (200 yen) and gentle green tea (100 yen) were also very affordable. There is a factory at the back where you can see the production process through the glass. Near the entrance, there is a retail zone for original products, making it a fun place to visit. I might try other varieties next time. Thank you for the delicious meal.
