The restaurant was already full right after it opened. There were many tempting menu options, but because it was a hot day and we were short on time, I chose cold dipping soba. The person I was with had chilled chirashi, which had chicken in it. They said it was delicious too. Lastly, we were served soba-yu, which was a nice touch. The restaurant, although old, was clean and beautiful. I will definitely visit again. Thank you for the meal!

I was on my way to a famous restaurant known for their dish presentations near Sanjo Keihan Station, but I ended up changing my plans and entering this lovely restaurant where a delightful aroma of dashi filled the air. It was Golden Week and the table seats were all full, but I was guided to a tatami seat where I could leisurely enjoy my meal. I ordered the curry rice bowl and the crispy udon noodles, and they were delicious! The curry rice bowl had fluffy Kyoto-style fried tofu and crunchy Kujo green onions, with each bite of the fried tofu soaked in dashi bringing so much happiness! I'm sure even the kitsune udon would be delicious here. The seasoning focused more on umami rather than spiciness. The crispy udon noodles were smooth, the dashi was delicious, and the tempura flakes did a great job. It was so tasty! There are also various other menu items available, and I would love to visit this restaurant again if I have the chance. Thank you for the meal!

I wanted to see the cherry blossoms in Kyoto, so I took a day trip from Nagoya. I visited Toji Temple and the famous Togetsukyo Bridge, then made my way from Nijo Castle towards Sanjo and Kamogawa. My destination was a place famous for the Shinsengumi and the Ikedaya Incident. Along the way, I found a soba restaurant. It was lunchtime, so my friend and I decided to go in. I ordered the Kyoto specialty "Nishin Soba" and a bottle of beer (Yebisu), while my friend chose the "Chicken Nanban." The restaurant, founded in 1905, was a traditional soba shop with a down-to-earth atmosphere. The staff gathered in a corner to have their own meal. It was getting hot during the day, so the cold beer tasted great. Then the "Nishin Soba" arrived. It consisted of herring fillet on top of soba noodles, similar to the original "Matsuba" style. The dish had a refreshing taste with sweetened herring, a light-colored and lightly flavored broth, and thin, slightly firm soba noodles. Compared to the Kanto-style soba, it had a more refined and subtle flavor. It was different from what I expected, but I could understand and appreciate the Kyoto style. Personally, I wished there was some sansho pepper. After finishing our meal, my friend and I paid the bill, which came to a total of 2,930 yen. We left the restaurant and headed energetically towards our destination.

I came to the Kyoto Museum of Culture to see the Shinsengumi Exhibition 2022. Before that, I decided to grab some lunch. I had soba at "Ohtsuru" restaurant. It was established in Meiji 38 and is currently run by the fourth generation. The place has a traditional Kyoto atmosphere. I ordered the Nishin Soba for 1200 yen, while my partner had the Shippoku Soba for 930 yen. The nishin was tender and delicious, soaking up the soba broth perfectly. Nishin Soba is definitely a must-try in Kyoto. The Shippoku Soba was also filled with plenty of ingredients, and the kids seemed to enjoy it. We will definitely visit again when we come back to Kyoto! Thank you for the wonderful meal.

Visited for lunch on October 12, 2022. The restaurant was about 70% full. I ordered curry soba. I realized that I had curry two days in a row, but this time it was curry soba from a soba shop, not the traditional Japanese soba - it was yellow Chinese-style soba. The taste was good, with a nice thick sauce. It was comforting. I accidentally put too much shichimi spice on it, so I couldn't stop sweating. But it was delicious. It had that "reliable" feeling. I thought it would be perfect if it came with rice.

I was recommended this restaurant by the hotel staff during my year-end trip to Kyoto, where I could enjoy New Year's Eve soba. Located near Nishiki Market, right in the heart of Kyoto, the atmosphere of the restaurant exudes a sense of history. Wanting to warm up my chilly body, I ordered the "Keiran Soba." I had initially imagined it to be a regular tamago toji (egg on top), but to my pleasant surprise, it was actually a tamago toji with a savory sauce. The ginger-infused broth was delicious, and the aroma of the hand-made soba was delightful. It immediately warmed me up, and by the time I finished, I was sweating! The restaurant was constantly busy with customers, and I could see why it was a popular and highly recommended spot.

Today's lunch was at "Soba Dokoro Ootori." It is an old-fashioned soba restaurant located at the Sanjo Sakaimachi intersection. I casually entered wanting to have a quick meal, but it seems like the restaurant has been around for over 100 years. The place looks clean and well-maintained, with a dignified atmosphere. It is quite a spacious restaurant. The menu includes various noodle dishes and rice bowls. Perhaps due to the increase in inbound tourists in the area, there are photos and an English menu available. I decided to go with the classic "zaru soba" for 830 yen. There is an explanation about Kyoto's noodle dishes on the menu. It might be helpful for those unfamiliar with the region. It's a bit disappointing that there isn't an explanation for "tanuki" soba. There is a noodle-making room at the entrance. The dish that arrived was a simple zaru soba. It had a good portion size and the soba noodles had a greenish color with a pleasant aroma. The noodles were quite thin. The dipping sauce was slightly sweet and complemented the soba well. I finished off the meal with soba-yu. Overall, I enjoyed the traditional soba from this long-standing establishment.

There is a noticeable soba restaurant at the corner near the hotel. It has a quaint, old-fashioned charm that sets it apart from other more polished soba restaurants. The exterior exudes a homey atmosphere. Due to Kyoto's measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, alcohol service is suspended, and the restaurant operates with shortened hours. Despite the high number of tourists in the area, this restaurant only had one local customer. I tried the Nishin soba, which had soba noodles on top, which was quite unusual. I also ordered the Zaru soba, which was refreshing, and I finished every last drop of the broth with sudachi (citrus fruit).

Soba No.17 *\(^o^)/* I go out to the city once a week, and when I do, I always have 5 or 6 things to do! (◎_◎;) I try to efficiently go around and find cheap coin parking. I also need to hurry to my friend's gallery before it ends! And what should I eat for lunch? I don't have much time, so something quick to eat would be noodles. So, I chose soba (((o(*゚▽゚*)o)))♡ I went into a shop that has been on Sanjo Street for a long time. There was a room for making soba noodles at the entrance. The shop was a typical udon and soba shop, and it was a bit hectic, so I chose cold soba. I ordered the Cold Kitsune Soba, which came with two large pieces of sweet and savory fried tofu on top. The soba noodles were soaked in sauce. The fried tofu was thick and had a good portion. The soba noodles were delicious, but the sauce was a bit too strong?! It was too thick and dry on the noodles. I prefer a lighter taste. They also served soba broth, which I added to the remaining sauce, but it was still too strong. Maybe I should have ordered zaru soba or hot soba instead. My friend and I were able to eat quickly and conveniently at this place, so we might use it again in the future.

I had seconds of soba for the first time and ate them in quick succession. I didn't like the tempura soba because the coating was like a cookie. The plain soba was delicious. The tsukimibukkake-like dish was also easy to eat and disappeared quickly. I didn't expect much because it was a tourist spot, but it was delicious.

The temperature has started to rise slowly, indicating the arrival of spring. However, on this particular day, it was so cold that it snowed, so I decided to warm up with some hot soba at "Sobadokoro Daitsuru" on Sanjo Street. As I looked at the menu, I couldn't help but notice the words "Chuka Soba" which caught my attention. Additionally, the hot pot dish that was featured in a magazine clipping at the entrance kept lingering in my mind, so I ended up ordering the hot pot udon. It had been a while since I last had hot pot udon, and this one was filled with green onions, kamaboko, sweetly stewed shiitake mushrooms, eggs, and tempura shrimp, all served in a traditional clay pot. The udon noodles had a nice chew to them, and the broth was rich in flavor. It was the perfect lunch to warm me up from the cold outside. Next time, I would like to try their specialty dishes such as the "Chirashi Soba" with chicken and stewed shiitake mushrooms, or the Kyoto-style "Ankake Soba". I look forward to trying more of their traditional soba dishes at this long-standing soba restaurant.

Soba Restaurant Ohtsuru - Nabeyaki Udon for 1200 yen
While taking a stroll in Kyoto's Nakagyo Ward, I stumbled upon a charming soba restaurant. Inside, the aroma of the broth filled the air, creating a nostalgic atmosphere. I enjoyed a delicious nabeyaki udon, which lifted my spirits. I also had a glass of sake.

Sometimes when I pass by, there is a good smell of dashi around the shop. I had never been inside before, but I visited for the first time after seeing an exhibition at the Kyoto Museum of Culture. I was very hungry and looking for a late lunch place, but it was already past lunchtime. Fortunately, the shop seemed to be open all day, and there were many foreign tourists as well. The menu had an English version, which was helpful. I ordered my favorite keiran. Personally, I think keiran goes well with udon, but since this is a soba shop, I ordered soba instead. The dashi in the keiran was delicious, and I couldn't help but drink all of it. The noodles were thin, and since the soba was warm, I had to eat it quickly to prevent it from getting soggy. The location is convenient and easy to use.

In the end, I chose the soba noodles, and they were delicious. The way the tempura was finely chopped was different from how it's done at my parents' house, and it tasted fresh. The green onions were fragrant and tasty. The sprinkling of sansho pepper was also great.

On November 26, 2020, in Kyoto, near the Inoda Coffee main store, the negi (green onion) was delicious and piping hot.

I usually have Sundays and holidays off, but this time I heard that this place was open during the Gion Festival. I was drawn in by the delicious smell of dashi wafting outside the restaurant and its charming atmosphere. Before my soba, I ordered a glass of cold sake from Shōtoku, along with some pickled vegetables and marinated herring. The herring marinated with sansho pepper went well with the sake. For my soba, I ordered kitsune soba and keiran soba. My husband's kitsune soba came with minced fried tofu and Kujo green onions. The menu mentioned Osaka kitsune, which probably has whole fried tofu instead of minced. The keiran soba was mixed with raw egg. It was a relaxing meal with delicious soba. Despite the crowds during the Gion Festival, we had a pleasant experience at this friendly restaurant. Thank you for the wonderful meal.

In the back streets of Karasuma Sanjo in Kyoto, I was drawn to a somewhat traditional-looking shop. The shop was surprisingly spacious with tatami seating in the back. There was a TV on. For someone born in the Showa era, it was a delightful situation. The zaru soba for 800 yen was honestly just average, nothing special. It felt like the kind of soba you could find anywhere, but with an extra 300 yen added for the prime location in the heart of Kyoto. Everything in Kyoto seems to come with a tourist price tag! (laughs)
