Located across from Sanjo Omiya Park in the largest arcade shopping street in Kyoto, the "Sanjo-kai Shopping Street (from Horikawa to Senbon)," this new shop opened on January 11th. It is the second branch of "The old taste" and has already been widely introduced despite being a new store. On the day I was shopping in the Sanjo-kai Shopping Street, I saw a sign for Douhua (Tofu Pudding) that said, "The taste of a grandmother from Tainan for you." Inside the shop, you place your order first in a cash-on system. The friendly male and female staff members are there to assist, and the glass case displays various toppings for the Douhua. The signature menu item, "Ama Douhua," allows you to choose from four toppings for 750 yen including tax. If you prefer it without toppings, you can order the "Original Douhua" for 500 yen, and you also need to choose between hot or cold and two types of syrup. Douhua is a Taiwanese dessert made by coagulating soy milk into a pudding-like texture and soaking it in a slightly sweet syrup. I ordered the "Ama Douhua" in a cold version with red beans, peanuts, tapioca, and white pearls as toppings, and I chose brown sugar syrup. The taste was a gentle and subtly sweet combination of the Douhua and brown sugar syrup, with the flavors and textures of the toppings adding layers of complexity. The harmony between the red beans and the Douhua was particularly impressive. The eat-in space offers table seating, sofa seating, and counter seating against the wall, with a view of Sanjo Omiya Park. The natural light filtering through the large windows creates a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. In addition to the Douhua, the menu also includes Lu Rou Fan (Braised Pork Rice) and Taiwanese-style fried bread, as well as beverages such as Alishan coffee and around seven types of Taiwanese tea, including Taiwanese black tea and Taiwanese beer. Just a 6-minute walk away, you can find the charming Sanjo-kai Shopping Street to the north, as well as places like Kamizonoen and Nijo Castle. The shop is easily accessible from Hankyu Omiya or Subway Nijojo-mae Station. Due to the current situation, please check their social media for the latest information on their operating hours before visiting.
