During our stroll in Kyoto, we spontaneously stopped by to eat sushi. We enjoyed delicious sushi at a very reasonable price. The shrimp was especially tasty and had a nice texture. Next time, I want to challenge myself with a seafood bowl.

I stopped by casually while visiting Toji Temple. I went around 1:30 pm, but it seemed to be busy that day, so they didn't have many options. I decided to try the chef's special rice bowl with ikura, salmon, shrimp, octopus, and eel. It was delicious! The ikura was a bit salty on its own, but when mixed with the rice, it was just right! The eel was also very tasty. The owner was friendly and talked to me about various things. He even gave me a Baumkuchen as a gift.笑

A few meters north of the East Gate of Toji Temple is a sushi restaurant that feels more like a cafeteria. The friendly master runs the place by himself. "Sushi Naru" was a nearby restaurant that I didn't know about until recently. I visited after my first time using GoToEat and thought "I want to come back." I had the seafood bowl for lunch again. Just like last time, it was rich in content. It might be even more amazing than the "tuna specialty store" near my house. Unfortunately, in the Toji area, there doesn't seem to be a return of people like at "Arashiyama" or "Kiyomizu." Even though tourist buses come for the autumn leaves, the number is low. And with the third wave coming, I wonder what will happen. As a local, I have mixed feelings about tourists, but I hope they will shop and eat locally while taking infection prevention measures. Thank you for the meal.

"Sushi Naru" is located north of the East Gate of Toji Temple. I had lunch there using GoToEat as I took a walk. I made a reservation through Tabelog, but although I can earn points, I cannot use them. Therefore, currently I cannot earn points, so it does not qualify for "GoToEat search". However, you can use premium meal vouchers and regional travel vouchers. To be honest, the "Lunch Seafood Bowl for 1,000 yen" was a great deal and delicious. It even came with miso soup and dessert (sesame dumplings). When I saw the photos from previous reviews, I was amazed at how good the deal was. There are other great lunch deals available as well. I highly recommend it to tourists and locals visiting Toji Temple. Thank you for the meal. There was alcohol disinfection available and the ventilation inside the restaurant was good.

Around noon, I enjoyed some sushi at Horie-san. By the time it was close to 2 o'clock, I was feeling quite hungry. I decided to try this place near the East Gate of Toji Temple. I sat at a counter seat with a sunken kotatsu-style table. There were a few foreign customers in the back tatami area, and only one person at a table near the entrance. I ordered the lunchtime sushi set for 1,000 yen (excluding tax). The sushi set arrived quickly, consisting of eight pieces of sushi. The pieces were large, with generous amounts of fish and rice. The quality of the fish was good, and the rice was not too sweet, which I liked. The miso soup had seaweed and green onions, but I wish it had a piece of white fish in it. Overall, this traditional sushi restaurant, with its down-to-earth atmosphere, was a pleasant dining experience. (The draft beer in the image was an additional charge)

It is right near Toji Temple. I had been curious about it, but when I went, it was closed or had a sign saying "will be away for a while", so I finally visited this time. They offer four types of time-limited specials, and they even have sea bream salt ramen. The other menu items not included in the time-limited specials are also reasonably priced. The interior of the restaurant has a sunken kotatsu-style seating area in front of the counter, and four two-person tables. Since it's a sushi restaurant, let's start with nigiri. The nigiri comes with 8 pieces: yellowtail, squid, tuna, octopus, sea bream, shrimp, egg, and salmon. The slices are quite thick, giving a volume that feels like more than 8 pieces. Among these, the mackerel was particularly delicious with its balance of vinegar and richness. Surprisingly, when I asked the young chef, he said they used to be near Kyoto Station, but due to a significant increase in tourists, the rent went up, so they moved here. They have been at Toji Temple for about 5 years. When I asked about their days off, he mentioned that they may close the restaurant for delivery and pick-up, but they are basically open every day. I must have just missed the timing. The chef was friendly and pleasant, and I enjoyed a pleasant meal while chatting. For some reason, I even received sweet beans as a parting gift. I will definitely visit again.

I explored To-ji in Kyoto today. The lotus flowers were in bloom and beautiful. Afterwards, I went to a sushi restaurant near the East Gate of To-ji called Sushinari. The restaurant also serves udon and rice bowl dishes. The interior has a traditional Japanese atmosphere with cups featuring fish kanji characters. I ordered the Cold Oroshi Udon Set, which came with a Tekka Don. The udon was topped with plenty of grated daikon and served with ice in the broth, giving it a refreshing texture. The cold soup made the udon firm and chewy, and the flavorful fried tofu was a nice addition. I enjoyed the Tekka Don with wasabi soy sauce, featuring large pieces of tuna and plenty of rice for a satisfying meal. The udon and rice bowl set left me feeling full and satisfied.

I enjoy strolling through the streets of Kyoto, exploring delicious food, enjoying the night-time atmosphere, and admiring Buddhist statues, architecture, gardens, wall paintings, national treasures, and important cultural properties. On my way to Toji Temple, I stumbled upon a great restaurant where I bought some mackerel sushi to take home. I hope this restaurant thrives, but at the same time, I don't want to share it with too many people. It's a bit complicated, isn't it? Good luck!

On the way back from Toji Temple, I searched on my smartphone for places to eat and found a bus route. I got on a bus heading to the South Gate, but then I saw a bus stop for the East Gate and got off. The restaurant was just a 30-second walk north from the bus stop. The seafood bowl for lunch was delicious and only cost 1000 yen. It's a great value lunch spot near the East Gate bus stop at Toji Temple. Highly recommend!

We went to a restaurant with 5 acquaintances on Kobo-san yesterday. The staff were unfriendly and the head chef didn't even greet us. We ordered cold kitsune udon and mackerel sushi set. I tried the cold kitsune udon and it was the worst udon I've ever had. It seemed like it wasn't properly boiled in a big pot. The ice in the cold udon was not made with dashi, so it was watery and there wasn't enough ice to keep it cold. The vinegar octopus was priced at 1080 yen, which surprised us all considering the taste and portion. We won't be going back to this place.

Recently, I've been eating a lot of sushi again... I've always loved sushi, so it can't be helped... That's why this time, I went to a sushi restaurant. I visited this place near the East Gate of Toji Temple that had caught my eye before when passing by. I arrived at exactly 12 o'clock. As I was looking at the menu in front of the restaurant... Oh, there are a lot of seemingly good deals on the menu... I decided to go in. Inside the restaurant, there were table seats in the front, sunken kotatsu (raised seating area where you take off your shoes) in the back, and it seemed like there were counter seats as well. We sat at a two-person table. The head chef seemed intimidating at first glance, but he was actually quite polite, which was nice. Now, I had decided on the Zaru Set for 800 yen (excluding tax) based on the menu outside. I could choose between mackerel sushi or mini chirashi sushi, so I chose the mini chirashi sushi... It arrived in 7-8 minutes. Oh, for a mini size, it has a good selection of toppings. The mini chirashi sushi consisted of two slices of what seemed to be tuna, a slightly larger shrimp, simmered shiitake mushrooms, cucumber, and shredded nori and kinshi tamago on top of the sushi rice. The sushi rice itself had no added ingredients. The Zaru Soba was of the standard type, but when I opened the dipping sauce, I was surprised to find ice in it. It didn't need to be that cold... that was my impression. As I ate it... as expected from the appearance, the tuna (or what seemed to be tuna) had a delicious amount of fat. The shrimp was also good. The sushi rice was the standard Kansai-style sushi rice with a slightly stronger vinegar and sweetness. The wasabi was in powder form though... The Zaru Soba was also standard, and the dipping sauce with ice melted to a nice consistency, quite strong in flavor. Well, this is normal. The person next to me ordered a single serving of chirashi sushi, which looked quite delicious for the same price of 800 yen (excluding tax). The taste of the toppings was quite good, so I thought it might be good to try the chirashi sushi next time. For 800 yen (excluding tax), this was a good value for money. I might visit again for a quick meal...

A restaurant located along Omiya Street, near the gate of To-ji Temple and close to the Shinkansen railway tracks. They offer a variety of dishes such as sushi, chirashi, udon, and seafood bowls. The atmosphere is casual and the lunch sushi is made with thick and substantial toppings. I visited this place during a work trip to Kyoto, but unfortunately, the restaurant near To-ji Temple was closed. As I passed through the temple gate on my way to Kyoto Station, I found this lively restaurant and decided to stop by for lunch. The seating area had both traditional tatami seating with a counter and regular tables in the front. There were also a few people waiting near the register for takeout orders. I settled at a table and looked through the menu while waiting to be served. I considered getting the mackerel sushi and udon set, but ended up choosing the lunch sushi set. The one-person serving arrived on a plate with surprisingly thick toppings, showing the chef's dedication to quality. The sushi rice had a slightly sweet taste with a good amount of stickiness. While the sushi didn't necessarily reflect seasonal or regional flavors, the toppings were well-balanced and offered a good value. The octopus and eel were on the smaller side, but still had a satisfying texture and flavor. Although I didn't have much interaction with the kitchen staff, the service was friendly and efficient, making it a comfortable and welcoming place to dine.

Located a little above the east gate of Toji Temple, this sushi restaurant is in a two-story building with a glass door entrance on the first floor. The front has a wooden sign hanging above the door. The interior is lively with various signs and banners. Upon entering, there are table seats near the entrance, and further inside, there is a counter and a tatami area. You can catch a glimpse of greenery outside, suggesting there might be a garden. The atmosphere seems enjoyable once you settle in. The menu offers a variety of options, including udon sets, but being a sushi restaurant, I decided to order the C lunch set. The set included 8 pieces of sushi - yellowtail, tuna, sea bream, squid, salmon, shrimp, egg, and eel. Each piece was generously sized, with the fish topping being quite large. The tuna, for example, had a bigger piece of fish than rice. With a high fish-to-rice ratio, each bite was a moment of happiness with the deliciousness of the fish filling your mouth. The set also came with miso soup and a post-meal treat, making it a reasonable lunch option. I also purchased discounted mackerel sushi being sold at the storefront, which became my dinner for the night. The mackerel sushi had a perfect balance of vinegar seasoning, thick slices, and a delightful taste.

I visited a sushi restaurant near Toji Temple. The restaurant had a coupon offer where you could get a discount by presenting the coupon. The exterior of the restaurant looked casual, like a local sushi restaurant. Inside, there were table seats in the back, as well as counter seats and regular tables. The menu included a special discounted menu, so there was no need to use the coupon. I tried the 8-piece nigiri set for 1000 yen, which included eel, shrimp, egg, cured mackerel, yellowtail, tuna, octopus, and squid. Each piece was generously sized, with the rice having a good balance of vinegar. The price of 1000 yen for 8 pieces felt reasonable. The restaurant would be a good option for tourists visiting Toji Temple who want to enjoy sushi in a casual setting. They also offered seafood bowls, chirashi sushi, and udon sets, providing a variety of options to choose from based on your preferences.

On March 10, 2015, I entered the restaurant with my mother in the early afternoon. They still had some of the day's lunch menu available, so I grabbed a discounted sushi pack (¥350) from outside and enjoyed it with my meal. Today's special, the negitoro and bonito sashimi bowl with miso soup set, was only ¥600 and was really delicious. It was such a great deal, and the quality was something you wouldn't find in Tokyo at this price. Most of all, the manager was very friendly, and we were able to relax and enjoy our time. I will definitely come back again! ^_^
