In mid-June, another review from Kyoto. I bought black shichimi at Sannenzaka and as I headed towards Kodai-ji Temple, I came across a dessert I had seen a lot on social media and TV. It was tiramisu served in a sake cup. There was a photo menu of desserts and drinks next to a Japanese-style gate. My wife was intrigued by the tiramisu, so we decided to take a break here. As I peeked inside the building from the gate, I saw trees planted on both sides of the approach to the entrance, giving a full Kyoto vibe. There were terrace seats on the left side of the entrance, where you could relax while enjoying a drink. Upon entering the building, we had to place our order and pay. The signature menu item was the tiramisu: matcha or hojicha tiramisu (each 700 yen), drink set (1,100 yen), matcha (with Japanese sweets) 740-940 yen, Japanese tea (with Japanese sweets) 640-840 yen, matcha ice cream (600 yen), matcha black honey latte, matcha chocolate latte (each 740 yen), hojicha latte, hojicha azuki shiratama latte (each 840 yen), matcha azuki shiratama float (900 yen), soft serve ice cream 640-740 yen. The capacity of the shop is quite large, with 30 seats on the 1st floor, 46 seats on the 2nd floor, and 28 terrace seats. We ordered the Uji matcha tiramisu set (1,100 yen) and an iced hojicha latte (+100 yen). We also ordered a Uji matcha chocolate latte (740 yen). We shared the tiramisu between the two of us. The first floor had a counter for ordering and a kitchen space in the back, with a spacious floor to the left of the entrance. The interior of the shop was designed in a Japanese style, with the highlight being a central table with glass display showcasing items like chopsticks, small plates, fans, brushes, combs, etc., which would attract foreign tourists. When our number was called, we picked up our order from the counter. The tiramisu had a vibrant green matcha layer on top, making it almost too pretty to dig into (but we did). The taste was gentle, as it did not seem to use mascarpone (probably), unlike traditional tiramisu. The hojicha latte and Uji matcha chocolate latte were rich in flavor. This dessert and drink combo would be perfect for tired tourists exploring the area. More than half of the customers were foreigners. It's not surprising given that over half of the people walking around are also from overseas. It was a delightful encounter with the matcha tiramisu I had seen on social media. It was delicious. Thank you!
