This is a yakitori restaurant called "Yakitori Ichiban Ichiijo-ji" in Ichijo-ji, Kyoto. It seems to be a chain restaurant, as I have seen similar signs in other parts of Kyoto. However, once you step inside, it has a very authentic yakitori restaurant vibe that blends in well with the local area. My son and I entered the restaurant and started with a toast with beer. The appetizers were "simmered pumpkin and chicken" and "cucumber and chicken breast with spicy sauce" which were delicious, my son ended up eating all of them. We then ordered the "shime saba" as an appetizer, which was thick and fatty, and very delicious. The grilled items we ordered were "negima", "torimomo", "seseri", "tsukune", "pork belly", "squid legs", "thick tofu", and "chicken with cheese", all of which were classic and consistently delicious. We enjoyed cold sake (the chain restaurant's president apparently conducted human experiments and found that it prevents hangovers), followed by shochu on the rocks. In between the grilled items, we also had "deep-fried eggplant" which was tasty. The restaurant is run by the master and two female staff members, creating a cozy and comfortable atmosphere. It was a very fitting and enjoyable dining experience. Thank you for the meal.

Over 30 years ago, a middle-aged man left his job at a telecommunications company to build a yakitori restaurant in Ichijoji. He was particular about using binchotan charcoal and the way he grilled the skewers, and despite being a small shop, it quickly became popular through word of mouth (not online). The man would occasionally let out a cute "Ah-tsu" when the charcoal crackled, and he would take his time grilling the skewers carefully. Back then, regular customers would carefully consider the timing of their orders, placing them early to ensure they got their food on time. Now, as one of the chain stores spread throughout Kyoto, the man wishes they would still be recognized as the original store, feeling a bit nostalgic.
