During the odd hours when work is off, most bars usually open from 5 pm, so I was looking for a place nearby around 4 pm and unexpectedly found "Yataiya," a place I had visited before. It used to be where a convenience store was located (along Kujo Street). It's a grateful place as it operates continuously from day to night. When I arrived around 4 pm, there were already 2 groups of 4 people, and surprisingly, there were 3 women inside. It's more reassuring when there are women besides men. As soon as I sat down, they brought a container of cabbage. It was not bite-sized, but rather 5 large pieces cut in half. The set included edamame, a platter of 10 assorted skewers, deep-fried squid, tomato slices, and 6 alcoholic drinks, all for around 4000 yen. The beer is particularly cheap, I remember it being 299 yen. As a Kirin lover, I was delighted. The platter of 10 assorted skewers included shrimp, ham cutlet, quail egg, onion, pumpkin, lotus root, beef, chicken, and more. The batter was thin and crispy, making it easy to eat as many as you want. The sauce was the usual one, with a rule of no double dipping. If you ask the staff, they will bring you dashi soy sauce as well. Dashi soy sauce goes well with the skewers, especially the vegetable and fish ones. The deep-fried squid seemed like a lot at first, but the batter was thicker than the squid. However, the squid was sweet, and with the dashi soy sauce, mayonnaise, and shichimi, it became even more delicious. This place is convenient when Kyoto Station is nearby but you want to avoid the crowds.
