When the intense heat subsides and autumn is near, I come here. I opt for the daily tonkatsu set meal (750 yen) instead of fried chicken. The pickled daikon is finely sliced. The pickled cucumbers are the same. The tonkatsu is crispy. I add extra sauce because it's lightly seasoned. The rice goes down smoothly, and the miso soup is full of tofu and spice. The taste here reminds me of the old student cafeteria from back in the day. Back then, they also served extra-large rice bowls with natto. Stir-fried vegetables with sauce and natto were a staple in Tokyo's student cafeterias. About 50 years ago, there were many boarding houses near Waseda University, and public baths too.

Lunch at a representative Western-style restaurant in the southern part of Gojo-dori. I had the B lunch set (hamburger and fish fry for 830 yen). The menu mainly consists of dishes priced in the 600-800 yen range, offering good value and quality with a taste reminiscent of Hayashi in Higashiyama Sanjo. It was crowded with kind locals from Shimogyo Ward and perhaps some monks from Higashi Honganji Temple. Seating at around 11:30 AM almost guarantees sharing a table, and by noon there is a short line forming (though the turnover of customers is fast). The tonkatsu curry at the neighboring table smelled amazing, so I'll definitely try that next time.

I visited around midday (12:45) and was able to enter smoothly during a change in customers. I had the daily special (fried chicken set) for 750 yen, which included a small portion of 10 pieces of fried chicken. They provided soy sauce, mustard, and mayonnaise for flavoring, so I could enjoy changing the taste as much as I wanted. I finished it all in no time. They will be closed for the year-end and New Year holidays from December 30th to January 3rd. I would like to visit again. Thank you for the meal!

Visited alone at 11:30 am. At first, there was only one group of customers, but then more and more people started coming in! When I left, there was already a line forming. The daily special (chicken cutlet) for 750 yen was worth it in terms of taste, portion size, and price! The chicken cutlet was crispy and juicy, and the demi-glace sauce was excellent! No wonder there was a line forming. It's a bit far from my office, but I will definitely visit again for lunch and dinner. Thank you for the meal! ♫

Located about a 15-minute walk from Kyoto Station or a 5-minute walk from Subway Gojo Station, this restaurant stands quietly on a small alley. The interior has 5 four-person tables and 1 two-person table. It's always busy, so you may have to wait outside or give up if you come at a bad time. The owner cooks in the kitchen while his wife serves customers, so they come to take orders when they have free time. The food is delicious, and it's nice to be able to eat at a reasonable price in Kyoto, where many restaurants are expensive due to tourism.

Located in a residential area a short walk from Gojo Station, this old-fashioned diner run by a couple is quite popular with locals even in the early afternoon. The prices are reasonable, and the chicken cutlet I ordered had a delicious flavor with a crispy coating and juicy meat. They cut it into thin slices for easy eating, which I found thoughtful. I left feeling full and completely satisfied.

Even though I was able to get in without waiting, there was still a line during lunchtime. The food was well-prepared and it's understandable why it's so popular. However, I wish they would put more effort into the white rice and pickles. I understand that they may be struggling with high ingredient costs, but it's a shame when the food is so good.

I visited "Matsumoto" for the first time near Gojo Station on the subway. It's a traditional Western-style restaurant with very affordable prices. Although I really wanted to try the chicken cutlet, since it was my first visit, I ordered the C set meal for 980 yen, which comes with a hamburger, fried egg, and shrimp fry. This menu is the most expensive one at "Matsumoto". After a short wait, a very generous portion was served. The hamburger, shrimp fry, and fried egg, with ham underneath, made me happy. The cabbage and salad were also very filling. The hamburger had a nostalgic taste, and eating the shrimp fry with mayonnaise instead of tartar sauce was a nice touch. Enjoying the fried egg and ham while scooping up a bit more rice was a satisfying experience. I will definitely come back again.

A popular restaurant among salarymen. Four people sat down at a table together. The shrimp fry wasn't as plump as expected, with thin shrimp. It wasn't as crispy when bitten into. The spaghetti side dish was a salad type with a delicious tartar-like sauce. Hmm, I think I prefer the shrimp fry at Ootaya's. The rice portion was quite generous even with a regular serving. The miso soup was well-made and tasty. The service was efficient with the mother bustling around, creating a good atmosphere. The father was also diligently cooking. I'd like to try other items on the menu as well.

I heard that the Ebi Fry set meal here is both delicious and great value for money, so I decided to visit. I was worried about whether they were open during the pandemic, so I called ahead to confirm. The chef answered the phone cheerfully and said, "We're open from 11:30." Feeling reassured, I parked at a nearby coin parking lot and arrived around 11:20. The restaurant opened promptly at the scheduled time, and there was a small line forming consisting of my husband and me, and an older man who arrived on a bicycle. Once seated, we quickly ordered two Ebi Fry set meals. The chef immediately asked, "Can you handle two orders of Ebi Fry?" We said yes, and it became clear that the Ebi Fry set meal was quite popular. Within 5 minutes, the restaurant was full, with about half the customers ordering the Ebi Fry set meal. I suspect it may have been due to the restaurant being featured on YouTube. The food arrived in less than 10 minutes, and we were impressed by the piping hot Ebi Fry. We enjoyed it with the classic mayonnaise provided, and the simple salt and lemon seasoning on the table was also good. The portion of rice was just right, and we finished our meal feeling satisfied and transported back to a nostalgic, pleasant lunchtime reminiscent of the Showa era. It was a delicious meal with great value for money. Thank you, we will definitely come back again!

The shop was rated 3.38 during the visit. They offer a daily special or a regular menu item for 720 yen. Despite the low price, the quality and quantity are good. On this occasion, the daily special was tonkatsu, made with thick, quality meat and served with rice, miso soup, and pickles. It is a popular spot for local office workers at lunchtime.

"Matsumoto Dining" (Kyoto, Gojo) may be targeting only regular customers, but... it can be unsettling to enter a restaurant with no menu displayed outside. Today's special: Chicken cutlet lunch for 720 yen. One-coin lunches in Osaka, Kyoto, and Kobe (main dish for 500 yen, including items under 400 yen) Roast beef bowls to extra-large portions, meaty beef bowls in Osaka, Hyogo, and Kyoto. Dining out on hamburgers, a Western food staple.

Fried chicken set meal! There are 7 small pieces of fried chicken. They are served with soy sauce and Japanese mustard. Lemon is also included, and when the dish is served, the mother brings mayonnaise (which is great!). The coating has a nice flavor of soy sauce base even without dipping anything. I finished it cleanly. Next time, I will definitely go for a Chinese menu! Thank you for the meal!

On the fourth day of my menu conquest plan, I decided to try the katsu curry. I arrived early, got my food quickly, and left promptly. The katsu was crispy and hot, which was nice. The curry sauce reminded me of the normal curry from Coco Ichibanya, neither good nor bad. Personally, I prefer the set meals here. Next, I think I'll try a Chinese-style set meal! Thank you for the meal.

The variety of the menu, the wide range of Japanese, Western, and Chinese dishes, I couldn't resist coming again today (laughs). To avoid the three Cs during lunchtime, I visited around 11:30 again today. It seems they are open throughout the day, so for those who are really concerned, I think after 12:30 is the best time. Even if you come early, it still gets crowded after 12:00 (sweat). Today's special was the service lunch! I think yesterday was yakisoba set, but today it's mixed fry! Can't miss that. The standout today was the cream croquette. The white sauce wasn't too thick, and the seasoning was just right, I think I could eat 10 of them. The demi-glace sauce is also amazing. The amount in this set meal is just right. Personally, I like the seasoning of the miso soup. I'm looking forward to what I'll order next time at this enjoyable restaurant. Thank you for the meal.

I wanted to expand my lunch options, so I searched on Tabelog and found Matsumotoya. The shop was a bit hard to find down a narrow road. My first impression upon visiting was that it is a local diner beloved by the community with a nostalgic Showa-era feel. The shop is small with only six tables, but they offer a wide variety of menu items, perfect for those struggling to decide on lunch. For my first visit today, I decided on the tonkatsu set meal, which was highly recommended in reviews. The others with me ordered more unique items like grilled liver set meal. The tonkatsu itself was smaller than before according to reviews, but it was still satisfying. The standout was the demi-glace sauce drizzled over the tonkatsu, which was delicious. The salad and spaghetti salad on the same plate were also tasty and comforting. I can see myself coming back here often. Thank you for the meal. Oh, it seems that the restaurant is quite popular, with lines forming around 12:00 pm, so it's best to visit at off-peak hours.

I visited during lunchtime. The place has a local feel, with people from nearby companies and neighborhoods coming in for lunch. The staff even remember the names of regular customers. Most people order the daily special. I had the curry cutlet, which was spicier and more filling than I expected. It seems like they put extra effort into their dishes. It's an old-fashioned place where smoking is allowed.

Matsumoto is a popular restaurant located in the area of Gojo-dori and Higashinotoin-dori, and it gets quickly filled up during lunchtime. Although it may look like a simple cafeteria, it actually offers a variety of dishes including udon, Chinese cuisine, and most notably, Western cuisine. One of their top dishes is the "Adult Western Set" priced at 950 yen. It includes a generous serving of hamburger steak topped with demiglace sauce and a sunny-side-up egg, crispy shrimp fry, spaghetti salad, rice, miso soup, and pickles. The portion size for the price is incredibly reasonable. Another highly recommended dish is the "Tonkatsu Curry" which is a large serving of tonkatsu on top of curry rice priced at only 800 yen. This is the most expensive item on the menu, with other dishes ranging from 500 yen and up. Overall, the food is delicious and affordable at Matsumoto.

I entered a side street off Karasuma Gojo and found a modest sign. I arrived for lunch around 11:45. The restaurant had about 7 tables and was half full. I was torn between the shrimp fry or the bowl, but ended up choosing the daily pork cutlet set. I later found out that the shrimp fry takes longer to prepare during busy times. The daily set was delicious! The pork cutlet was fried carefully and even the salad pasta tasted good. The miso soup was piping hot, just the way I like it (I don't like lukewarm). There was also cucumber and pickles, overall it was a "carefully made set meal". Around noon, the restaurant suddenly got crowded with a diverse group of customers - regular middle-aged men, families with children, and craftsmen working nearby. I definitely want to visit again!

I realized that the photo of the shrimp fry set meal, which I must have eaten here a few times, was not posted here (ヽ(д`ヽ). I remember it being the most expensive menu item here. As a shrimp lover, I was so happy to get four large shrimp fries, vegetables, coleslaw, rice, miso soup, and pickles all for under 1000 yen... I finished every last bit of it (^∇^). It was delicious as always. For some reason, when I eat here, I feel really full afterwards!

In the Ukyo Gojo area, there are several favorite Western-style restaurants that are cheap, delicious, and satisfying. This place is one of them. This time, I had the pork cutlet curry. The curry has a classic Showa-era flavor - not too spicy or sweet, but rich and familiar with just the right amount of spices. It comes with a crispy, thick pork cutlet that is easy to bite into. The meat is sweet and delicious. All this for 770 yen. Once again, I had a satisfying lunch experience here ^^
