I searched for lunch around Nanzenji Temple and went to Gyouemon Chaya. During cherry blossom season, it's hard to make reservations anywhere, so I visited without one. The menu only had a Yudofu set for ¥2500 (tax included). The tofu was delicious. Among the Yudofu restaurants around Nanzenji Temple, this one is reasonably priced.

I visited this dog-friendly place and had a great time at the separate dog room with about 3 tables. It's better to make a reservation if you're bringing a dog. The staff was friendly and the atmosphere was cozy, making it a safe place for dogs. I ordered a meal for 2,500 yen with added yuba (tofu skin), and it came with vegetable tempura, so I left feeling very satisfied. After dining, I moved my car to a nearby parking lot and visited dog-friendly attractions like Nanzenji Temple and Keage Incline. Highly recommended!

It's a tofu restaurant near Nanzenji Temple in Kyoto. It was a bit crowded when I visited on a holiday, but I was seated fairly quickly. The restaurant seemed spacious with rooms in the back and even a second floor. There was a carp at the entrance. On that day, the lunch menu was fixed. The tofu came with plenty of condiments and was delicious. The rice and tempura were simple. I also ordered some yuba, but it was surprisingly small and disappointing. Overall, it was a homely restaurant. Compared to others nearby, I think the prices are reasonable. There are famous tofu restaurants on both sides as you head towards Nanzenji Temple. It was bustling. The autumn leaves on a rainy day were very beautiful.

In Kyoto's Sakyo Ward, near Nanzenji Temple, is the birthplace of Yudofu (hot tofu). There are several shops where you can enjoy Yudofu in front of the temple. I visited Gionemon Chaya, which has a parking lot. I had the Yudofu set meal for 2500 yen. It came with appetizers (green onion miso, somen jelly with vegetables, sweet potato, edamame, and wheat gluten), Yudofu (enough for two people), and I added some fresh yuba for 300 yen. The meal also included vegetable tempura, rice, pickles, and tofu. The tofu was firm, slightly sweet, and delicious. Lastly, I enjoyed drinking the leftover broth, similar to soba broth, after finishing the tofu. Overall, it was a delightful experience!

Around 2:00 pm on the weekend, I visited a famous tofu shop after leaving Nanzen-ji temple. As I walked past, I saw a sign that said "tofu" with the menu written below it. I decided to go in since they seemed to offer individual servings of tofu. Inside, there were traditional box tables and no one near the entrance. I ordered yudofu and added some fresh yuba while sipping on cold barley tea. The yudofu arrived after a short wait, but I had to wait a few more minutes for the pot on the tabletop stove to boil. The yudofu was served with plenty of condiments, which I enjoyed. The sauce was sweet with a rich flavor that impressed me, especially as someone who is used to ponzu sauce. The tofu was soft and easy to pick up with chopsticks, and the portion size left me wanting more. Eating the yuba alongside the tofu provided an interesting contrast in texture. Lastly, the staff recommended diluting the leftover yudofu broth with the sauce and drinking it, which I found to be flavorful and enjoyable to the last drop. The prices for individual items were reasonable, and while the restaurant lacked a sense of luxury, it is a great option for those looking for a casual yudofu experience.

I arrived at this restaurant near Nanzen-ji for a late dinner. They are open from 11:00 with continuous service, which is convenient for finding a place to eat after the usual lunch hours. When I visited after 3:00 PM, the restaurant was not crowded. The dishes I had were: Yudofu (tofu in hot water) - 800 yen for a single serving, Dried Yuba (tofu skin) - 100 yen, Ebi (shrimp) and vegetable tempura - 1000 yen for a single serving, and Zenzai (sweet red bean soup with mochi) - 650 yen. The portion of Yudofu was generous, so I shared it with a friend. The Ebi and vegetable tempura was also a large portion, served with dipping sauce and salt. The taste was not particularly outstanding. For those who do not want small side dishes, rice, or miso soup, ordering dishes individually seemed like a better deal. I also had a bit of beer with the meal. The mochi in the Zenzai was very fragrant and had a mild sweetness that was pleasing to the palate.

The tofu was delicious at this restaurant. Even my 3-year-old child enjoyed it. Despite its simple appearance, the soup had a refined taste with a rich dashi flavor, and the tofu was delicious, so we ate a lot. The tempura and other side dishes were also all delicious.

Located on the approach to Nanzenji Temple, amidst famous shops, this restaurant offers affordable yet high-quality yudofu compared to other shops in the area. The set meal includes three small side dishes, vegetable tempura, yudofu, white rice, and pickles. The small dishes were surprisingly delicious. The tempura lacked crispiness and the salt provided was plain. The yudofu, served in a simple manner, was tasty. The tofu, made in the morning, had a nice texture and flavor. The ponzu sauce for dipping was sweet and flavorful. The white rice was tasty, but it would have been nice to have something more unique like mixed rice for a tourist spot. Considering the lower price compared to other shops, I can't complain, but next time I might splurge a bit and try a nearby high-end restaurant. Thank you for the meal!

On Sunday around 1:30 PM, I went to another restaurant but there was a line of 20 groups waiting, so I gave up and walked around. I found this place nearby and was able to enter right away. This restaurant only serves one type of Yudofu set for lunch, and the service was quick and efficient. I ordered a bottled beer and it was served in no time, followed by freshly fried tempura. I was surprised! The tofu in the Yudofu was smooth and delicious, and the vegetable tempura was also good when eaten with salt. The cost performance was great and I was very satisfied. ☺️

I came to Nanzenji Temple to see the autumn leaves and felt like eating yudofu, so I happened to use this restaurant that was available. It is about a 5-minute walk from Nanzenji Temple, and there are other places where you can eat yudofu, but luckily a reservation slot was available so I was seated in a tatami room. For lunch, they only had the yudofu set meal (2500 yen). It comes with tofu, appetizers, vegetable tempura, rice, and pickles. They also provided children's tableware and small chairs. After ordering, the appetizers arrived in about 5 minutes, and the stove was already set up for the tofu. The yudofu comes with condiments and ponzu sauce. The vegetable tempura and rice arrived in about 10 minutes. The appetizers included simmered sweet potatoes, persimmon in a Japanese dressing, and edamame, with a sweet flavor. The yudofu was warm and tasted good with plenty of condiments. While it may not have a distinct Kyoto taste, it was still delicious. The vegetable tempura included carrots, burdock root, pumpkin, bell peppers, and sweet potatoes, and had a decent portion size. The taste was average, with the tempura coating lacking crispiness. If you want to try the famous yudofu of Nanzenji Temple, this restaurant is conveniently located within walking distance for tourists to stop by after sightseeing. The taste is decently delicious and it's a convenient choice.

Visiting Kyoto on the hottest day of the summer! After cooling off a bit at the waterway under Nanzen-ji Temple, I went to this shop for some shaved ice! I got the classic Uji shaved ice for 450 yen! So nostalgic! It was refreshing! While fancy shaved ice is trendy, sometimes simple is best! It was delicious! ❤️

During a visit to Nanzen-ji Temple in Kyoto in autumn, my companion suggested trying Yudofu (tofu hot pot) for lunch since we were in Kyoto. The popular Yudofu restaurants had long lines, but we found Gouemon Chaya, a family-run shop with a cozy atmosphere. We were seated quickly despite the crowd. The menu that day only offered Yudofu set meals, which was fine with us. The food was served promptly, and I dug in right away since I was quite hungry. The Yudofu was simmered with kelp and eaten with dipping sauce and condiments. The silky smooth tofu was delicious, with a perfect balance of flavors. The rice was also well-cooked, and I enjoyed it with the Yudofu, vegetable tempura, and pickles. It was a healthy meal without animal protein, but it was satisfying and provided me with energy for the afternoon stroll in Kyoto.

I visited around 1 pm after seeing cherry blossoms. It was crowded on a Saturday, but I was able to enjoy the yudofu with plenty of condiments. I felt like I wanted some miso soup at the end, but overall it was a satisfying experience.

We wanted to try some Yudofu at a restaurant near Nanzen-ji Temple, but all the famous places were full or had run out of ingredients. However, we knew about this restaurant near the entrance of the Nanzen-ji Temple approach that is a hidden gem when all else fails, so we called ahead and were able to make a reservation. Our group enjoyed some delicious Yudofu there. It wasn't crowded and we had a great time.
