Today, I met up with two friends from my university days for drinks after a long time. My classmate S and S-senpai, who I recently forced to come along with his girlfriend and sister. S had made a reservation in advance for the Fūjin course, which includes the popular menu items like the negima nabe. It's a luxurious course where you can taste the best dishes of the restaurant. The day was long, and we were able to hit the town in broad daylight, which was quite enjoyable. We entered the restaurant at the reserved time of 6:00 PM. To the left, there were nostalgic snacks and toys, like a flip calendar, and to the right, there was a telephone from 70 years ago. My expectations were rising. We left our shoes at the entrance and climbed the steep wooden stairs to the second floor. The interior had not been overly renovated and still gave off a vibe of the 70s, which was very calming. We were given a free cup of bamboo sake, and we each ordered our drinks. It was nice to see a selection of Sapporo beers, which is very Asakusa-like! We ordered by using the room's intercom system and giving our room number. The service was quite good. We progressed through the appetizers, sashimi, dumplings, beef tendon, the main dish of negima nabe, and finished with udon and two raw eggs. For dessert, we had monaka ice cream. Considering the quality, the price of 5300 yen was very reasonable. The taste was rich yet refreshing, lacking the typical sweet and savory flavors of the downtown area. The medium fatty tuna was so good that I wanted to eat it as sashimi. When paired with the soft and sweet Senju green onion, it was absolutely delicious. The additional order of chicken skin was perfectly cooked and had a great balance of fat, it was truly outstanding. It paired well with the Dassai sake. They had a variety of famous local sakes and shochu, and the menu prices were all listed in "mon," which was a fun touch. One "mon" is equivalent to about 12 yen. I've met S-senpai a few times recently for drinks, but S had been avoiding going out during the pandemic, so it had been 4 years since we last met. The conversation flowed, and before we knew it, we had stayed until the closing time of 10:00 PM. On the way back, we took a stroll through Senso-ji Temple and Nakamise Street, and then headed to the Ginza Line. The illuminated five-story pagoda and Kaminarimon gate were incredibly beautiful, and at this late hour, there were few people around, making for a pleasant walk. It was a wonderful restaurant, and I definitely want to come back again. The total bill for three people was 30,600 yen. Good job!
