I went to this place for the first time! At first glance, it may seem intimidating (lol), but once you step inside, you are immediately surrounded by a Showa era atmosphere. The ambiance of the restaurant was amazing. The food was simple yet comforting... just perfect. I went for a quick drink before dinner, so it was early and very quiet, which was very soothing. I came to Shizuka after a long time. In Kyoto, it seems like there has been a rapid increase in casual izakayas in the past ten years or so. The variety of drinks and snacks is rich, and the prices are so cheap, right? From "this is amazing!" to "well, it's alright," there are plenty of options. Shizuka stands out from such trends and has quietly continued for a long time. The modest sign of Shizuka. When you enter the store, you are reminded of how long it has been since you drank in such a space. Plain chu-hi, then sake. The dashimaki tamago is a must-have here. The hot egg omelette pairs perfectly with sake. On this day, I sat at a table, but the raised tatami area in the back envelops the history of drunken sake drinkers like a mandala, so it's worth seeing.

Jellyfish and sea urchin for 420 yen, sweet and sour pickled smelt for 500 yen, two hot sakes for 320 yen each. Total: 1,560 yen. The atmosphere inside the restaurant was like stepping back into the Showa era. The jellyfish and sea urchin dish could have had a stronger sea urchin flavor. The sweet and sour pickled smelt dish was originally supposed to be made with horse mackerel, but they were out so they used smelt instead. I knew beforehand that the menu was limited, but it was still a bit tough with such a small selection. However, I was able to enjoy a quiet and leisurely drink, so it was nice. Izakaya Shizuka @ Shijo Kawaramachi Finally finished the rush of year-end and New Year's projects... Had a 2-person party in Kawaramachi (laughs) This place is in the alley behind Shinkyogoku, near Yanagikoji!! The street is paved with cobblestones and has a charming atmosphere. The menu and the atmosphere of the restaurant are both very cool. All the fatigue was blown away in an instant (^皿^) Hehe. Ochaya for 120 yen, Jiyusu for 320 yen, Konjac simmered in small potatoes for 450 yen, Okara for 370 yen, Dashimaki for 490 yen. A wonderful restaurant that I would love to visit again when in Kyoto. I found this deep izakaya in Kyoto Kawaramachi when I visited in November 2020. I went there on a holiday night and it was moderately busy. We were able to use the private tatami room in the back, which was nice. The many graffiti on the walls gave a sense of history, it was fun just looking at them. We ordered a lot of food, and the dashimaki tamago was excellent. The atmosphere was good, and I would like to visit this izakaya again. Payment is cash only, which is unfortunate.

Located on Yanagi Koji Street, "Shizu" is a popular standing bar near the Shijo Kawaramachi bus stop. The street has recently been renovated with cobblestones. It is situated across from the well-liked "Taka" bar. The interior of "Shizu" has a Showa-era style and is in a chaotic state, but it exudes a comforting atmosphere. It is more about enjoying the ambiance than the taste. We ordered yudofu for 550 yen, shiokara for 320 yen, and sake for 320 yen. With 80 years of history, it is said to have been raided by the GHQ during student protests. Reflecting on such history while enjoying a drink might be a good idea...

Following the first restaurant 'Toho Saikan Honten' that I learned about in Gregor Aoyama's essay manga 'Shibuchin Kyoto Sanpo', I visited this place as well. It is a graffiti-covered restaurant, which piqued my interest. So, on the third night of my business trip to Kyoto, I visited this second restaurant. It was around 7:50 pm on a Sunday. I did not make a reservation. The restaurant is located on a quiet alley (Yanagi-koji) close to the intersection of Shijo Street and Kawaramachi Street. It is a two-story townhouse with a quaint exterior. A light brown noren curtain hung at the entrance. The interior, however, had a Showa-era popular atmosphere, quite different from the exterior. On the first floor, there were 2-3 small raised tatami rooms for 6-8 people each, about 3 tables for 4 people, and a few counter seats. There seemed to be seating on the second floor as well. We were led to a private room on the first floor, which was even more graffiti-covered than I expected. The walls, sliding doors, and even the ceiling were covered in graffiti, some of which seemed quite old. There were even some philosophical and nonsensical scribbles. The phrase 'Ritsumeikan' stood out (laughs). Two middle-aged women were running the place, both of them were friendly and cheerful. When we visited, there were two other groups of customers on the first floor besides us. One group was a middle-aged couple, and the other was two office workers, both seemed like regulars. The menu offered a variety of simple izakaya dishes, probably close to 50 items. The drink selection was limited. The prices were reasonable overall. There were seven of us, and we ordered "Hakusai Tsuke 420 yen" x2, "Dashimaki 490 yen" x2, "Chikuwa Tempura 450 yen" x2, and "Nasu no Age Dashi 450 yen" x2. I had a "Lemon Highball 420 yen" for my drink. There was no appetizer. The food was served relatively quickly. The dishes had a comforting home-cooked taste. The sweet and fluffy "Dashimaki" and the crispy "Chikuwa Tempura" with a crunchy texture stood out. The lightly flavored "Lemon Highball" also left an impression (laughs). The atmosphere felt like stepping back in time to the Showa era, quite soothing. If there was a place like this nearby, I would probably become a regular customer.

I came to visit Shizuka, my favorite Chinese restaurant, which I couldn't go to last time I was in Kyoto. It is located right in front of Yagi-koji TAKA, where I had a standing lunch earlier. TAKA was super crowded, but in contrast, this place was quiet and the name truly lived up to its reputation. A part-time worker came in and said, "I'm here instead of XX who couldn't make it. I'm XX." Isn't it unusual for a stranger to come as a pinch hitter like that? They quickly explained the system and brought us some salami. We were all surprised and laughed together. My friend wanted to eat Yudofu in Kyoto, so we ordered it, and while it was delicious, I couldn't help but think, "Is it really necessary to eat Yudofu in Kyoto?" (LOL)
