My partner had bought this dashimaki several times. We stopped by on the way back from a lunch at a Western-style restaurant. It was featured on TV this Wednesday in "The Next Living National Treasure" and I got one (≧▽≦) There were also autographs from celebrities displayed. This dashimaki is a small size, I think it was 350 yen. It's delicious even without heating it up. Heating it up enhances the fluffy texture. It doesn't have a strong dashi flavor. I usually prefer tamagoyaki over dashimaki, but this one seems to have a light dashi flavor. I haven't eaten dashimaki from other places to compare, though. There were tables inside the restaurant, so dining in might be a good option too! Maybe I'll try it during the monthly market on the 21st.

The restaurant is located in a residential area about 10 minutes from Toji Station, between Kujo and Hachijo. It is near the landmark of the strip theater DX Toji. They are known for being the originator of the Kyoto-style roll, which can be made with either Osaka or Kyoto style rolling. The restaurant now operates within Super Okamoto, but on the 21st of every month, they have street sales in the morning. On these days, the rolls are slightly cheaper. I purchased a sandwich this time, and the staff recommended one with a slightly burnt crust for a crispy texture. The roll was gentle and elegant in flavor, with a soft and thick texture. In Kyoto, Corona, which closed in 2012, and its successor Madrag (also available at the sister store Gabor) are also famous for their roll sandwiches. I remember Corona's roll being firmer, so I would like to compare them someday.

Every year at the end of the year, I go to buy dashimaki. It is located near Kyoto Station, walking towards Toji Temple, turning south before Ramen Kenkyusho, and it's a store attached to eat-in. At lunchtime towards the end of the year, there is a long line for the live demonstration sales at the storefront. The skillful handling of several grills at once and the exquisite grilling technique are captivating, and the 10-15 minute wait time is not boring at all. The price is almost half of department stores or specialty shops. The half size is 380 yen. For a family of four, one whole size is very satisfying. The taste is also highly recommended.

I bought it because it was being sold at a food market. It seems to be quite famous as it was also featured in a magazine. The shop is said to be the origin of dashimaki tamago. Compared to upscale shops like Nishiki, it feels more affordable. The main item is dashimaki, but I decided to eat it as a sandwich without taking it home. It costs 430 yen for the equivalent of two slices of bread, but each slice is long and narrow (cut into four equal parts) for easier eating. By the way, in Kansai, egg sandwiches are called thickly cooked, but is that really the case? Around here, we just use boiled eggs. Well, if it's supposed to be thickly cooked, it's a bit strange because this one is dashimaki. I feel like there's no need to intentionally pair bread and dashi together. It's not bad, though. I think it's just that the dashi flavor is really strong. If there's another opportunity, I'll try the dashimaki next time.

I had some errands to run near Toji Temple in the morning, and I remembered seeing Ishi-chan eating dashimaki at the Magic Restaurant before, so I decided to visit for the first time. The restaurant has a traditional storefront appearance with a big sign advertising dashimaki, so it's hard to miss. Inside, they had various types of dashimaki such as dashimaki with green onions, eel-wrapped dashimaki, dashimaki omelet rice, and dashimaki sandwich. I purchased the regular dashimaki and the one with green onions. Although there was seating available, I decided to take the warm green onion dashimaki home. It had a nostalgic taste and was delicious. Thank you for the meal.

Date: July 21, 2015 (Tuesday) around 10:30 AM Weather: Sunny/Hot Order: Dashimaki - ¥330 I feel like this type of dashimaki tastes even better when it's cooled down a bit rather than when it's piping hot. The seasoning with dashi and salt is just right, and I enjoy savoring it slowly (especially with some cold sake). Of course, it's delicious when it's hot too. Service: The service is good and friendly. Atmosphere: On the day of the Koboichi at To-ji Temple, they also sell freshly grilled dashimaki outside the store. In addition to the regular dashimaki, they also offer variations with Kujo green onions or eel. You can also request (sometimes even without asking) to purchase freshly made hot dashimaki. They also have various side dishes available for takeout. Access: It is located on the left side when you go down Inokuma Street from Hachijo Street.

I thought I had a map in my head, but I ended up going in circles before finally arriving... or rather, I couldn't recognize the place because it looked completely different from the store I passed by earlier. It was labeled as a supermarket, so I was expecting a big store, but in reality, it was more like a small convenience store. Inside, there were juices, snacks, and a corner with side dishes like fried udon. I bought the Kyoto-style rolled omelette, one full piece and one half piece. Although there were machines for cooking eggs in the store, it felt a bit lacking in atmosphere, so the rolled omelette seemed like a regular one you would buy at an ordinary supermarket. Well, I guess it's not surprising to go at that time. The taste will be a surprise when I get home. I also stopped by a cake shop on the way back. Now, I'll give it a try. It's quite filling and tasty... but if you ask if it's exceptionally delicious, I'm not sure. It might stand out to someone who eats it, distinguishing it from the rolled omelettes sold everywhere, but I couldn't tell the difference...

Yesterday I visited Hiroe Koubou, a popular restaurant. It was crowded with many people. Hiroe-san, the owner, has a special promotion on the 21st of every month, which also drew a long line at Okamoto's shop. On this day, the price of Kyoto-style rolled omelettes is reduced to 250 yen each, so it was worth waiting in line. In the back of the shop, the owner was busy cooking the omelettes, while his wife and mother were wrapping them up at the front. It was a family-run business with a cozy atmosphere. The craftsmanship and skill of the owner in making the rolled omelettes was impressive to watch. The process was quick and the omelettes were delicious. I also tried one on the spot, and it was fluffy and flavorful. The warm omelette had a rich dashi flavor, while the cold one I took home had a milder taste. The eat-in area had old photos of the shop, adding to the nostalgic charm. It was a delightful experience, and I highly recommend it to those visiting Toji Temple.

It's a nice season to have lunch outside, so we decided to go to Umekoji Park for some fun. It has become a tradition for us to eat lunch while watching various JR trains, as my son loves trains. I wanted to try some delicious rolled omelette for lunch, so I did some research and found this restaurant. We rode our bikes there, keeping the location in mind. It was a bit off the main road, tucked away in a quiet corner of the city... The restaurant had an old-fashioned grocery store feel, with a scent of Showa era. The rolled omelette I was looking for was on the right side of the store... and there was one left... I was relieved. It was there... and the price was still like in the Showa era... only 300 yen... quite cheap. It would probably be double the price in a supermarket. And the taste? Just one word: "delicious." This is how rolled omelette should taste. This is Kyoto's rolled omelette, a delicious treat that I have enjoyed since long ago... and at such a reasonable price... I will definitely continue to visit this place.

Near Toji Temple, there is a local egg omelette shop that has been loved by the community for a long time. The omelette is really delicious and I have been eating it since I was a child. Today, I went on a business trip to Kyoto Central Wholesale Market. While I was visiting my familiar wholesaler, the young staff from the shop brought some freshly made omelettes for us. We all enjoyed the warm omelettes together. The omelettes were so flavorful and comforting, especially in the cold winter. It's a great experience to eat them on the spot like this. As a bonus tip, I recommend checking out omelette shops near central wholesale markets across the country. They usually offer delicious omelettes at affordable prices, starting from around 200 yen. It's a great way to enjoy a tasty treat and maybe even bring some back as souvenirs for your family.

Kyoto-style dashimaki tamago is also a great souvenir from Kyoto☆ It seems like they are being cooked inside a small supermarket (Okamoto) run by a local owner in the remaining downtown area. When I went in the evening, there were only two packs left in the deli section, and they still had some residual heat. I couldn't tell the difference between Kyoto-style dashimaki tamago and regular dashimaki tamago, but it was fluffy and delicious^^ I enjoy cooking dashimaki tamago myself, so I might have wanted to see them being cooked as well...♪ Store Information ※Please check the blog for images as I have not provided any links.
