During a business trip to Kyoto, I took a leisurely stroll by myself in the evening, admiring the red lanterns. I stumbled upon a mysterious shop with lanterns hanging outside, but with a sign that looked like a bookstore?? And there was even a magazine rack outside with books on display. Curious, I decided to take a look inside! The interior had a homemade feel with table seating and a round table. In a spot that seemed like a bookstore counter, a staff member was pouring drinks and enjoying themselves (lol). I sat at the round table and ordered a bottle of beer. For snacks, I got tuna sashimi for 390 yen, simmered fish tendons for 350 yen, and a mix of five skewered cutlets for 350 yen. While waiting for my beer, I looked around the shop. There were second-hand books for sale on the back wall. Stepping through the curtain behind a map of Kyoto, I entered an adult space (lol) and the main attraction was the bar (lol). It seems the bookstore started this as a way to avoid losses. The president was in charge of cooking, and the floor staff were old friends from the bookstore days. A strange shop indeed. As I chatted, the snacks arrived. The tuna was average, but the tendons were good. Just the right amount for one person. The fried skewers were worth the 350 yen, and even had shrimp in them. Originally, I planned to leave after this, but with the light snow falling in Kyoto, it was too cold... So before I knew it, I was drinking hot sake (lol). For some reason, I suddenly wanted to eat fried bamboo fish cakes for 180 yen (lol). As I leisurely chatted with the master, a junior colleague who was late to our second stop showed up (lol). He just had to drink at the bookstore... (lol) In the end, we ordered more and more, with additional hot sake, and before we knew it, it was quite late (lol). From tofu hot pot and oden to Kyoto-style snacks, we even ended with potato fries (lol). We filled up the young staff member's stomach, so the bill ended up close to 6000 yen, but we did order quite a bit (lol). It was a fun experience sitting in the bookstore, well, I was sitting on a chair, but you get the idea (lol). Most people who just had a quick drink paid around 1000 yen. I hope these kinds of shops, which are part of the local community, thrive. Thank you for the meal.
