I found a highly rated izakaya called Tameshiteya in a minor area when searching for a place to eat near the tenth district. Unfortunately, it was already full when I called to make a reservation. So, I decided to head towards the Kujo area where I stumbled upon this Western-style restaurant near the Goju-no-to of To-ji Temple. The friendly restaurant had a counter and eight table seats in the back. I followed the recommendation to try the assorted appetizers, which included cod milt, conger eel, octopus, Tanba black beans, spinach quiche, marinated sea bream, roast beef from black-haired Wagyu, and separately served Camembert cheese crackers and salmon marinated dish. It was quite a spread. After finishing the beer, I tried this year's Beaujolais Nouveau and then a half bottle of 2007 Pouilly-Fuisse. The owner of the restaurant is a great storyteller, but his non-stop talking, although entertaining at first, became a bit overwhelming towards the end. In the midst of his talk, he recommended trying the Russian classic dish, Cream Stew in a Pot. The dish is baked in the oven with bread dough as a hot lid. The bread dough was soft and fluffy, perfect for dipping in the stew. It was delicious, and the unique presentation in a small pot resembling a Japanese pickled plum jar was quite amusing. I also tried the sautéed spinach with a hint of garlic, chicken karaage with plum meat, and a complimentary flavor-filled fried chicken recommended by the chef. Overall, the restaurant had high-quality dishes, but the slightly overpowering saltiness was a minor issue. The fluffy omelette rice from the lunch menu also caught my attention and is something I would like to try next time.
