Now, it's Kyoto Station again. It's become a tradition to have lunch before watching a play. Last time I went to Mange, which is right across, but this place caught my eye too. I arrived 10 minutes before opening and was the 7th in line. Since there were only 6 chairs, I had to stand and wait. I was guided to the counter on the left side as soon as I entered the restaurant. It was a spacious area with 4 seats available, and they said it was okay to use this area more widely. I had decided to go with the Premium Minoru-zan, which includes tempura, side dishes, roast beef, and grilled fish. I also wanted to have a little bit of delicious Japanese sake, so I asked the staff. They mentioned that they have a tasting set of 3 different kinds of sake. When I asked about the quantity, they brought a glass to show me. I inquired if a slightly larger glass was available, and they brought a glass in a masu. The staff was very kind and cheerful. I had the Tomio Junmai Ginjo in a glass. The sake had a slightly subdued aroma of ginjo, with a crisp taste, making it quite a refreshing Junmai Ginjo. Then, the meal arrived. There were many small side dishes! My excitement went up. (I forgot to take a picture of the menu, so this is from memory) - Chrysanthemum greens and yuba ohitashi - Kujo green onion with vinegar miso dressing - Simmered hijiki seaweed - Roast beef - Mackerel grilled in Saikyo miso - Daikon radish with plum dressing - Homemade tofu (with arrowroot? A chewy texture) - Tempura (fiddlehead fern, eggplant, sweet potato) - Deep-fried taro - Chicken wrapped in egg - Fried fu with sweet miso - Tomato and mozzarella - Chopped Shibazuke pickles - Strawberry - Rice and miso soup (with daikon radish, fried tofu, and shimeji mushrooms) Everything was delicious, but the standout dishes were the deep-fried taro, which was seasoned with salt, and the large, juicy sweet potato tempura. The sweet potato tempura was like a sweet treat, moist and unlike any other I've had before. It was a very satisfying lunch.
