"From August 17, 2015, the restaurant has become completely non-smoking. I think it was a bold decision to make the izakaya completely non-smoking. After the smoking ban, I feel that the customer base coming to the restaurant has gradually changed. Of course, there are many regular customers from the neighborhood, but there has been a noticeable increase in female customers and younger people. Young women customers come in alone and enjoy sake at the counter. With the area around Yanaka, being featured in Michelin Travel Guide, foreign tourists also come to enjoy Japanese cuisine. I believe that as we approach the Tokyo Olympics, there will be more non-smoking restaurants, and Nishikiya is a successful example where this has had a positive impact on the business.
"Nishikiya" is an izakaya established in 1952 (66 years ago) in Sendagi. When you enter the restaurant, you feel like you have slipped back in time to the Showa era, a traditional izakaya. Despite being an old establishment, it is clean and pleasant, allowing you to enjoy drinking in a fun atmosphere. Loved by the locals, it is always bustling with office workers, students, regulars from the neighborhood, and even foreigners. They offer classic menu items such as "yakitori" and "nimono," but they also change the menu slightly according to the season, offering fresh ingredients at very reasonable prices. The appetizers are free and generous.
They also serve unique dishes like "noresore" (baby conger eel) and "tempura of young sweetfish," which I discovered for the first time at this restaurant. Handmade dishes like "sesame tofu," "ankimo," "satsuma-age," and "nikogori" add a special touch. Run by a family, their teamwork is excellent, and they efficiently serve dishes even when the restaurant is busy. It's easy to see why they are so popular.
Well, shall we have a drink and some food at "Nishikiya" today and head home?"
