When heading towards Kawaramachi Gojo from one of the ten streets, you will find Aranishi Shoten on your right, which has a dining area attached. It seems to be a butcher shop, so the food is expected to be delicious. Climbing a small spiral staircase to the second floor, I found a cozy dining area with about 5 tables and I was the only customer there. A waitress came up from downstairs to take my order. The daily menu changes, and today's special was "Assorted Fried Foods". I opted for the daily lunch set at 570 yen, looking forward to trying the meat dishes next time. On Tuesdays, they serve "Steak" or "Teppanyaki Set", Wednesdays offer "Thinly Sliced Grilled Meat and Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura" or "Beef Curry Set", Thursdays have "Beef Cutlet" or "Minced Cutlet", Fridays feature "Mini Hamburger and Shrimp Fry", Saturdays offer "Yakiniku and Croquette", and Sundays are closed. So, visiting every day or choosing the day with your favorite menu is a good idea. The TV was on in the restaurant, and while waiting for the food to arrive, I had the place to myself as the waitress went back downstairs. After about 10 minutes of relaxed waiting, the waitress returned with the dishes. The meal included miso soup with seaweed, rice, and a plate of assorted fried foods consisting of two small shumai dumplings, one cream croquette, half a boiled egg, half a fish cake, one shrimp fry, and one skewered cutlet. Mustard, ketchup, and tartar sauce were provided for seasoning. I tried the croquette with ketchup, shumai with mustard, and shrimp fry with tartar sauce, and while they tasted okay, they were enjoyable because they were piping hot. The egg and fish cake were more like side dishes, and while the onion in the cutlet was tasty, the meat was a bit tough and the portion could have been a bit more generous. However, considering the price of 570 yen, this was probably the best they could offer. In terms of cost-performance, I think it's a bit on the high side, but the fact that you don't have to worry about anything is a plus point. It's a hidden gem for a casual lunch.
