Google review 4.3, Ikyu.com 4.38, a well-known restaurant featured in the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper, yet inexplicably rated 3.35 on Tabelog. Is the scoring criteria okay?! This restaurant is located on Sanjo Street, which used to be the main street in Kyoto. The area is filled with historic buildings, shops selling incense bags, tabi socks, origami, and Japanese paper. It's a bit away from the main area of Kyoto near Oike Station.
[Interior & Operations]
The restaurant is on the second floor, with a wide staircase and handrails. The chef greets you from the kitchen through an arched window as you enter. The interior has spacious table seating (two tables for 4 people, two tables for 2 people) and a counter with 5 seats. It was fully booked on the evening of January 3rd. Initially, I was worried as there was only one chef in the kitchen and one staff member for service (sommelier). The chef even brought the dishes to the table. Another staff member joined later, and the operation ran smoothly.
[Drinks]
This place is known for its great selection of drinks. With a sommelier present, you can enjoy wine. The variety of wine glasses was enjoyable to see. The most noteworthy aspect was the availability of draft Heartland beer, which surprised me as I had only had it in bottles before. The sommelier explained the wine, but being young, the taste descriptions were a bit vague. It seemed difficult to convey the flavors accurately. I hope they can improve their ability to describe the taste more effectively in the future.
[Menu]
The menu is presented on wooden boards with a mix of printed and handwritten fonts, which adds a nice touch. However, the content was not well conveyed. Some menu items like Saltimbocca, Tagliata, Caprese, and Bistecca were written in katakana, making it hard to understand. It might be off-putting for customers to keep asking the staff for explanations. Small notes on the menu were hard to read, and having photos would be helpful.
[Dishes - Vegetable-rich Salad]
This dish is a must-try at this restaurant. When my brother-in-law ordered it, I was initially skeptical due to the unassuming name on the menu. However, the dish was impressive with a variety of vegetables. It was a delightful surprise. The menu name could be more descriptive.
[Dishes - Norwegian Salmon Tagliata]
The salmon melted in your mouth, and it was delicious. However, the presentation was disappointing as it blended with the transparent plate. Using a transparent plate for this dish didn't do it justice. When asked about plate selection, the staff mentioned they use whatever is available, which was disappointing. They should choose plates that enhance the presentation of the dish.
