Impressions: This eel restaurant, also featured on "Kitanai Shuran" by the comedy duo "Tonneruzu," is located in a shopping street on the way from Uji Station to Byodoin Temple. You can see the eels being grilled outside the store, making it easy to spot. The interior of the store has a homely atmosphere. The main eel dish is prepared after you order, taking about 25 minutes to be ready (officially stated as 15 minutes). If you sit at the counter, you can watch the fresh eel being prepared, which adds an entertaining element. I ordered the special eel bowl for ¥4400, and the taste was truly excellent. The eel was tender and thick, the sauce was not too sweet or too thick, creating a perfect balance. Overall, I believe this restaurant can be considered one of the best for eel dishes (compared to other nearby eel restaurants like Unagiya in Osaka and Daikokuya Unagihei). As the location in Uji is not too crowded these days, it might be a good choice to visit.
Evaluation Details:
1. Store, Atmosphere, Service: 40 points
The interior is somewhat cluttered and stained with eel oil and soot. The service by the owner's wife is homely, and the master's conversation is enjoyable for those who like chatting. The store has only one large 6-person table and a counter.
2. Food and Taste Evaluation: 80 points
Primarily known for eel dishes, they also serve tempura, which looked appetizing. I would like to try it next time.
2-1 What I Ate: Special Eel Bowl ¥4400 - 3 pieces of eel on rice with a side of eel bones and internal organs, beer, and bone senbei (appetizer?)
2-2 Taste Evaluation: Eel - Tender and thick eel without any fishy taste, with just the right amount of oil. The sauce is quite delicious, not sticky like regular eel sauce. Rice - Average. If there was more emphasis on the rice, the overall rating would be much higher. I believe this place is among the top nationally for eel dishes. Bone Senbei - Provides calcium and nutrients from eel liver, fried to a crispy texture, perfect with beer.
3. Cost Performance: 60 points
The special eel dish (1 eel) costs ¥4400, which is quite expensive. Considering the location and store, it may seem overpriced. However, the eel bowl was ¥2800, and I remember the portion being the same, so I think the evaluation is at a normal level. (I would like to try the eel bowl and tempura next time to give a more accurate evaluation)
