Even when the ramen shop nearby has a long line, this place is spacious and welcoming. Their post-COVID service system is self-service from ordering to tray return, which is efficient and convenient. Their shoyu-based ramen with burnt green onions is easy to eat and delicious. The gyoza is small but tasty.

I arrived around 1pm on Wednesday, September 30, 2020. The restaurant is spacious and has a nice atmosphere. I ordered the Bikkuri Negi Ramen with fried rice set. It was incredibly delicious and I am very satisfied and happy. The menu is extensive, so I want to try more dishes next time. The soup was excellent with the crunchy leeks. Thank you for the meal. I will definitely go back. I will enjoy all the ingredients in this world with gratitude. I'm calling for delicious food♪ The more I eat, the more power I feel overflowing♪

Today's work was near a place with many foreign tourists, but luckily everyone here was Japanese. Since it was my first visit, I decided to go for the daily lunch special. I had yakisoba, water dumplings, and egg and cabbage soup. While other restaurants in tourist areas tend to be expensive, this place was reasonable. It cost me 842 yen.

A Chinese restaurant located near Higashioji-dori Street (Shimizu-dori) was filled with Chinese tourists. The menu offers classic Chinese dishes like mapo tofu and shrimp in chili sauce, as well as lunch options such as Chinese bento boxes and negi soba. I ordered the "Surprise Soba" (half fried rice set) for 1188 yen. The negi soba was a ramen dish with plenty of three types of green onions - kujyo negi, charred negi, and white negi. The "Surprise Soba" came with 10 dumplings on top, creating a unique and somewhat junky dish. It was surprisingly good, but I think eating the dumplings separately might be better. The fried rice was quite oily and heavily seasoned, but for an additional 200 yen to make it a set, it's not bad.

I visited the restaurant at noon on a holiday, and it seems to be loved by locals. It is located near Kiyomizu Temple, but there were hardly any tourists, so I was able to get in right away. They are known for their delicious gyoza, and I decided to try the "Surprise Ramen" (900 yen) which caught my eye. It was a light negi ramen with ten bite-sized gyoza on top, which was surprising visually. The ramen had a gentle and light taste, and it paired perfectly with the fatty chashu. The popular gyoza was also delicious, and I left feeling very satisfied. Next time, I want to enjoy the gyoza on its own to savor its true taste!

I stopped by on my way back from visiting Kiyomizu-dera. This time, I ordered the negi soba and a set of 5 secret gyoza. The soup was very light with little oil and had a gentle flavor of green onions. However, I couldn't taste the burnt green onion flavor much, and the noodles were quite soft, which was disappointing. You might want to ask the staff to adjust the cooking time for the noodles. The secret gyoza was described on the menu as bite-sized, but they were even smaller than expected. Despite their size, I could taste the flavor of the vegetables. Overall, the flavors were not very strong, and I'm not sure if I would visit again even if I pass by.

We had lunch at a restaurant called "Gyoza-ya Shoen Tei" located along Higashioji Street, just north of Gojo Street. I had seen this place on TV and passed by it often when visiting a nearby graveyard. It was lunchtime and a few regular customers started coming in after us. The restaurant was quite spacious with sunken kotatsu seating and a separate smoking area. There seemed to be a second floor as well. The lunch menu had a variety of options at affordable prices. I ended up ordering the Gyoza Rice Bowl for 880 yen, which came with gyoza topped with plenty of green onions and greens sautéed in scallion oil. The gyoza were smaller than expected, with a firm skin and a strong garlic flavor. The egg soup and scrambled egg were a bit bland. The meal also came with cold tofu. My friend had the Gyoza Feast Bento for 890 yen, which included 5 fried gyoza, 10 pan-fried gyoza, and 3 boiled gyoza. The fried gyoza were a bit tough, while the boiled gyoza had delicate skins that easily fell apart. The soup had a slightly tangy and rich flavor, which was delicious. The restaurant also sells gyoza for takeout. Address: 4-17 Kiyomizu, Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto Tel: 075-541-0884 Hours: 11:00-14:30, 16:30-21:00 Closed on Mondays Website: http://www.gyozaya-shoentei.com

After enjoying the autumn leaves at Kiyomizu-dera, I got caught in a terrible traffic jam of autumn leaf viewers and spent almost an hour descending Sannen-zaka (Sanneizaka). Feeling hungry and exhausted, I stumbled upon a place that I thought was a dumpling shop, but it turned out to be a type of ramen called "negi soba". Despite the slightly dim atmosphere inside, perhaps due to power-saving measures, I decided to take a break and ordered the negi soba (¥580) and the gyoza set meal (¥680). The negi soba had a generous amount of crunchy Kujo green onions, white leeks with mizuna, and charred leeks, creating a triple onion attack. The rich aroma and the slightly chewy texture of the leeks paired well with the Japanese-style broth. The noodles were from a place called Gion Goju-ban Seimenjo, thin to medium thickness, straight noodles that were quite soft. It felt more like a noodle soup with lots of leeks rather than ramen. The broth was seasoned with dashi, making it more enjoyable when paired with fried rice rather than as a standalone dish. As for the gyoza set meal, it might not satisfy gyoza enthusiasts as the gyoza was small and lacked presence. The skin was thin, and it didn't leave much of an impression when eaten. It also came with egg soup, cold tofu, and pickles. You can choose whether or not to have garlic. Overall, it was more of a light meal to rest and recharge rather than a filling one, perfect for a quick break to soothe fatigue. I also got to enjoy some celebrity sightings, adding to the overall experience.

Located near the approach to Kiyomizu-dera Temple, on Higashioji Street. I am a university student living nearby. Sometimes after school, I ride my bike here quickly. I often see groups of people having a great time at round tables. The dumplings are small but you can choose whether to have them with or without garlic. The noodles are delicious with the accent of toasted oil. When you order the dumpling set, you can get free refills of rice and soup, so you can eat until you're full. I go with friends or by myself. I will continue to rely on this place as a local neighbor. (Updated and corrected in November 2014)

Today I went to the Gyoza restaurant called Shoen Tei. I remembered that they use Kyoto vegetables to make gyoza when I had a reason to go to Kyoto, so I decided to visit. I wonder what kind of place this is. The exterior of the restaurant is brightly lit, making it stand out even from a distance. There is a large sign that says "Kyoto Shimizu Departure Gyoza Restaurant Shoen Tei" and a banner that says "Bukkake Gyoza." I wonder what Bukkake Gyoza is like. There is also a large temple bell visible in the background with some writing on it. I approached to read it and it said, "In chaos, do not forget wisdom; in wisdom, do not forget chaos; at Shoen Tei, do not forget gyoza." I will definitely not forget to eat gyoza. I started with a beer, which was surprisingly cheap at 390 yen for an Asahi Super Dry. Delicious! Gyoza and beer are a must. This time, I ordered the Bukkake Gyoza (with garlic) for 580 yen, as it caught my attention and was also recommended by the restaurant. It is topped with Mizuna sautéed in leek oil and plenty of Kujyo leeks, which are a familiar sight in Kyoto. The visual impact of the greenery is amazing and irresistible for leek lovers. The gyoza was cooked perfectly and the flavor of the carefully selected ingredients was spot on. The atmosphere inside the restaurant is calm and beautifully decorated, with white tables and black chairs in the center and counter seats at the back, leading to the kitchen. Shoen Tei, established in 1967, offers a secret gyoza that was truly enjoyable. In addition to pan-fried gyoza, they also have boiled gyoza, fried gyoza, as well as leek noodles and fried rice. I would like to try a different kind of gyoza next time. If you are near Kiyomizu Temple or Yasaka Shrine, I recommend stopping by. I will definitely go again.

I received a request from a fellow reviewer to try out this place, so I decided to go after work. It was just before 5 pm and there were no other customers in the restaurant. I approached a woman who seemed to be the owner and sat at a table near the entrance. The interior of the restaurant was very dark and had a strange layout. It felt like the place was closed or on a break, even though it was open for business. I ordered the "Negi Ramen Set B (680 yen)" which came with Negi ramen and 5 gyoza. While I was waiting, a supplier arrived with a truck to deliver ingredients. The door was left wide open during the delivery, letting in a lot of heat. I felt like I was in Iraq because of the intense heat. I waited patiently for the delivery to finish, but after 3 minutes, I couldn't take it anymore and closed the door myself. The owner told me that the delivery was still ongoing, but I had to close the door for my own comfort. I was surprised that there was another entrance for deliveries. The gyoza arrived 4 minutes late and they were tiny. They tasted okay but had a strong chemical flavor. The ramen was more like a chemical Chinese soup, very salty and artificial. Overall, the food was not impressive and seemed to rely heavily on artificial flavors.

On a Sunday when there was an election, I was walking around the town feeling a bit dizzy. It was so hot that I needed a drink desperately! As I was heading towards the convenience store, I saw a sign: "Limited offer! Draft beer for 100 yen"... Seriously?! Cheaper than a can of juice! Is it a lie or the truth, or maybe just a tasting size? But for 100 yen, anything is fine at this point! I went in! What came out was a glass of "Premium Malt" beer. Really?! Since it was a great deal, I also ordered the dumplings at the same price. 10 dumplings for 210 yen! They were a bit small but easy to eat. 10 dumplings and 2 glasses of Premium Malt beer for a total of 410 yen, amazing! It seems like a spontaneous pricing, but next time I'm in the Shizuka area, I won't be able to take my eyes off it! Today was such a lazy day... I woke up around 9 am, had a beer while watching "Waratte Iitomo", then went back to sleep, woke up in the afternoon to watch "Nep League", and fell asleep again... When I suddenly woke up, it was already 5 pm. My stomach was empty except for the morning beer. I was feeling hungry, so I decided to try this restaurant. It only took me about 5 minutes to get there by bike. As soon as I arrived in front of the restaurant, I could smell the delicious scent of dumplings even through my helmet! My expectations were high. The restaurant was quite spacious, and I could hear Chinese from the back. It seemed like a group of tourists. Why Chinese food in Japan? Haha. I was guided to the counter on the right as soon as I entered. It's a casual place where you can go alone or with a large group. The menu was quite extensive, with an all-you-can-eat dumplings option and your choice of 4 Chinese dishes. But I was there for the "negi soba" set menu. It's so cheap! A ramen and 5 dumplings for 680 yen! Cheaper than a regular ramen elsewhere. If you order the ramen alone, it's 580 yen. This is already cheap, but for an extra 100 yen, I would definitely go for the 5 dumplings! And when I looked closely at the menu, there was a set with half-fried rice added. Ramen, dumplings, and fried rice for 880 yen. So cheap! I had to order that immediately. While waiting, I observed the restaurant and saw dishes like "surprised soba" with ramen and 10 dumplings. It seemed like there was a set menu for that too. Also, the cold noodles had a set menu as well. Overall, the set menus seemed like a great deal. It was busy, but my order arrived in less than 10 minutes. Oh man, it's a set full of my favorite foods! I'm getting excited! Haha. I was hesitant about what to eat first, but the dumplings outside the restaurant smelled so good that I started with them. They were a bit small but delicious with a crispy skin! You can choose whether you want garlic or not when ordering, and I chose the garlic option this time. It might be good even if it's in the ramen! The negi soba had a gentle soy sauce flavor with a strong green onion aroma. The chashu was small but tender, and the noodles were just the usual kind that has been around for a while. Well, it was delicious as usual. The noodles seemed to get sticky quickly, so you should eat them quickly. As the name suggests, there's a lot of green onions in it, so even this one dish can be quite filling. Considering the price, it's more than enough. The fried rice didn't have any special features, but it was tasty without any flaws. It had green peas in it, which you don't see often these days. I wonder if people have preferences for that? For someone like me who usually struggles to decide between dumplings and fried rice for the set menu, this ramen set was really nice. Since it was close to home, I want to use it more and more from now on. Maybe I'll go for the cold noodles set next time. Thank you for the meal!

For lunch today, my family of three visited "Shoen-tei." I had been curious about their negi soba and bite-sized gyoza, so I convinced my wife, who wanted Italian food, to come here. The restaurant is located on Higashioji-dori, between Yasaka Shrine and Kiyomizu Temple. They don't have a parking lot, but there is a coin parking lot right next door with space for three cars. The negi soba, which I had imagined to be similar to ramen based on the photos, turned out to have a very Japanese taste. The broth is more like a dashi broth, with a katsuobushi base, reminiscent of udon or soba. The toppings include plenty of Kujo green onions and mizuna, giving it a lot of Kyoto vegetable flavor. The noodles are Chinese-style but quite light. The chashu pork was also authentically flavored with a sweet seasoning. The bite-sized gyoza was also full of vegetables, with a creamy filling that I personally found very satisfying. I wish I could have had a beer with it if I wasn't driving. The negi soba with a generous amount of noodles and five gyoza in the B set was 680 yen, I believe. My wife ordered the negi soba and fried rice set, also for 680 yen. Very reasonable prices, friendly to tourists and wallets alike. I would love to visit again if I have the chance! Thank you for the meal!

While looking for a place to have lunch during sightseeing in Kyoto, I came across this restaurant and decided to go in since I was quite hungry. When I first entered the restaurant, I thought it wasn't very spacious, but it seemed like two shops had been combined, with more seating towards the back, making it quite a large restaurant. My wife ordered the fried rice and fried chicken set, while I chose the dumpling set with garlic dumplings. The dumplings were a bit small but tasty. I also tried my wife's fried chicken, which was juicy and delicious. The fried rice was a bit light in flavor, but still elegant. It's nice that you can have unlimited refills of rice and soup. The negi soba set looked appetizing too. I noticed that they also serve homemade roasted pork here, so I'd like to try that next time.

In mid-August 2011, I visited this restaurant alone at 9:00 PM. Located near Kiyomizu Gojo in Kyoto, this place is convenient for a visit after exploring Kiyomizu Temple or Rokuharamitsuji. I decided to visit this restaurant while staying at the amenity hotel above it. The exterior of the restaurant displays appetizing samples, which caught my attention as I walked by. The prices seemed reasonable, so I decided to give it a try. Inside, there was only one group of four young women, probably because it was close to closing time. The restaurant is divided into two spacious sections, giving off a traditional Chinese eatery vibe. I ordered the Negi Soba Set for 680 yen, which included negi soba made with three types of green onions and homemade chashu, along with a side of fried rice. It was surprisingly cheap and filling. The taste exceeded my expectations. Despite the restaurant being named "Gyoza-ya Shoen-tei," I decided not to order the signature gyoza. The set that arrived amazed me. The aroma was delightful, and the soup had black specks of burnt soy sauce floating on top. The flavor was refreshing yet rich, with a perfect balance of thread-like chili peppers and chashu. The chashu was delicious, with a well-seasoned taste that stood out on its own. It complemented the ramen beautifully without overpowering it. The chashu here is truly remarkable! The small portion of fried rice that came with the set also featured the tasty chashu. The rice was fluffy and coated in a well-beaten egg, making it easy to eat. The subtle saltiness and the finely sliced chashu made it a delightful accompaniment. All this for just 680 yen. In recent years, the ramen scene has seen a rise in prices, but this restaurant offers quality at an affordable price. It's flawless. If I have the chance to visit Kyoto again, I will definitely try the signature gyoza next time. I have no doubt it will be just as delicious.

Located near the intersection of Higashioji Street and Shimizumichi Street, "Shoen-tei" is a restaurant that caught my eye with its displayed food samples when I passed by in a car. Today, while strolling around this area, I had the opportunity to stop by on foot. The restaurant is on the first floor of an amenity hotel, and it seemed that they specialize in gyoza based on the samples displayed outside. So, I decided to order the "Gyoza Feast Set" for 890 yen. Upon entering, I was told to choose any seat I liked, so I sat at a table near the entrance. I could hear the female staff making gyoza in a separated space next to the entrance. A tall, somewhat handsome male staff member wearing the restaurant's T-shirt came out from the back and took my order for the set meal, asking if I wanted garlic in the gyoza or not. I ordered it with garlic. I thought I was the only customer, but there were also foreign guests dining in the back room. In total, there were about 7 tables including the front and back rooms, 2 tatami seating areas, a counter with 4 seats, and a large table for 8 people. There was also an elevator that seemed to connect to the upper floors of the hotel, as the staff member brought some dishes and went upstairs. After about 15 minutes of waiting and observing the flow of cars and people passing by on the street, the food was brought to me. The set included three types of gyoza, soup, rice, and pickles, with a decent amount of food. The egg drop soup was ordinary but tasty. The main gyoza dishes consisted of 10 pieces of pan-fried gyoza, 3 pieces of boiled gyoza with vegetables, and 5 pieces of deep-fried gyoza with a mayo-like sauce. The pan-fried gyoza was delicious when dipped in the special sauce, the boiled gyoza had a tangy flavor and a chewy texture, and the deep-fried gyoza had a crispy exterior with a hint of nutty oil aroma. The menu for takeout also seemed extensive, so I recommend trying it out. Overall, the cost-performance ratio, taste, atmosphere, and service were decent, but there is room for improvement in the service aspect. Rating: 3.5 stars (70/100)
