Menchi Katsu Curry (large portion) for 980 yen including tax. The restaurant has a spacious and calm atmosphere. The curry is thin with no ingredients, but it has a decent richness. The Menchi Katsu is crispy and very juicy, with the meat itself being delicious. The sausage was average. There was no Fukujinzuke, but there was pickled radish instead.

I rode my bicycle over the mountain and stopped by on my way back home on a Sunday. I ordered the shrimp fry curry for 980 yen (tax included). It came with a side of shredded cabbage, which made the set look a bit meager, so I felt it would be better without it. I was disappointed that the curry was served at a lukewarm temperature instead of piping hot. The cold tea from the pot was not very cold either, which may explain why it wasn't crowded on a Sunday afternoon. The taste of the curry was okay, so it might be a relaxing place for those who want to avoid crowds.

It seems to be a popular dish, so I tried the katsudon. It was a style where you put the katsu on the rice yourself. It was hot, so let it cool a bit before eating. The breading was thick and crispy rather than crunchy. It was delicious. The restaurant was larger than I expected, and it seems like a place where you can spend a relaxing time.

I went to a tonkatsu restaurant and ordered a katsudon. I liked that the rice and egg were served separately. The tonkatsu was crispy and the broth was plentiful. When poured over the rice, it became very juicy, and I understood the reason for the spoon provided. The flavor was not too sweet, but I found it delicious. The pork was not too tender, a bit on the firm side, but considering the price, it was worth it and I didn't feel like I wasted my money. I didn't order it this time, but they also have seasonal limited-time menu items that I would like to try in the future.

While walking and saying "I want to eat tonkatsu," we happened to come across a restaurant (lol). The second floor is a yakiniku restaurant. We went around 6 pm on a holiday and there were already quite a few customers, so I thought it might be a popular place. The menu wasn't very extensive, with some unique items like tonkatsu in a chige hot pot. Overall, I think it's reasonably priced! Maybe that's why there were a lot of families. I ordered the shrimp and pork cutlet set meal, which came with two shrimp tempura and a pork cutlet. The shrimp tempura sauce seemed store-bought rather than homemade, and the shrimp tempura and pork cutlet were just average. The sauce was on the thinner side and slightly spicy. They also had pickled vegetables for free, along with miso soup and cabbage.

On November 24, 2022, Thursday, I visited for lunch. When I arrived, it wasn't too crowded, but by the time I left, it was full. I sat at the designated counter seat and placed my order. I chose the katsudon with karaage. It took about 10 minutes from ordering to being served. The fried food was all crispy and freshly fried, including the katsu in the katsudon. I understand why it took some time. There were pickles on the table, so I made sure to eat those too. It seems like customers also get a parking ticket for the rear parking lot, which might be another reason for its popularity.

Ebi Hire Teishoku ¥1046 is a set with 2 shrimp and 2 fried fins. We went with multiple people and the service was fast, making it easy to eat quickly. Even on a holiday night, it was not crowded so you can also relax.

Visit date: Monday, November 15, 2021, around 1:00 PM. Located at the intersection of Kawaramachi Marutamachi, next to "Bikkuri Donkey," making it easy to spot. As I passed by the front of the store, I was initially drawn to the autumn limited-time offer, "Cheese Sauce Katsu Set ¥990." Upon entering, there was a counter for solo diners, but I was selfishly alone and was guided to a table in the back. Looking at the menu, there were various tonkatsu, katsudon, value lunch sets, katsu curry, etc., making it a tough choice. In the end, I decided on the "Miso Katsu Set ¥1170." Rice can be upsized for free, but I opted for regular rice, which turned out to be a mistake. Additional rice costs an extra ¥200. The dish arrived a few minutes after ordering. On the table were complimentary pickles, mustard and sansho pepper, and original sauce. The miso katsu was a 140g pork loin cutlet with a slightly sweet miso sauce, crispy and delicious! Cabbage with original sauce, sprinkling mustard and sansho pepper on the tonkatsu for flavor variation. The default miso soup was "butajiru," which was a nice touch. I wish rice refills were free as I wanted at least two more servings. I finished at about 70% full. It seems like a chain restaurant but is a casual and popular tonkatsu eatery. There is also a video on Instagram @moritapan7.

I knew there was a restaurant there, but I found a new one that I had never been to before. I decided to go in out of curiosity. The restaurant is called "Katsudon Gen Kawaramachi Store." It is located at the corner of Kawaramachi Street and Marutamachi Street, with a "Bikkuri Donkey" on the second floor. Both of these stores are operated by the company "Kabushiki Kaisha Motohiro." While this company usually operates franchise chains like "Marugen Ramen" and "Bikkuri Donkey," "Katsudon Gen" is an original concept. There used to be three locations in Kyoto, but now there are only two left.
I visited the restaurant around 1 pm, so I was able to get a seat right away. The interior of the restaurant has a unique L-shaped counter and table seating in the back. I was seated at the counter since I was dining alone. The menu offers a variety of options, and the prices are quite affordable compared to other tonkatsu restaurants nearby. They even offer free extra rice, which is not common in other tonkatsu places where cabbage and rice refills are usually free.
I ordered the "Hirekatsu Set." When the food arrived, I saw that it came with three pieces of hirekatsu, with a cut in the middle. As a Kansai local, I always need mustard with my tonkatsu. The hirekatsu was tender and crispy, nothing extraordinary but still satisfying. I also tried the miso soup, which was full of ingredients and had a unique spicy flavor, not commonly found in Kyoto.
Overall, it was a good experience, and I realized I need to explore more lunch spots in the area.

A tonkatsu restaurant located in Marutamachi Minamihigashi. They are open until close to midnight, even after the end of the shortened hours request due to the state of emergency. They offer various types of katsudon and tonkatsu set meals, but I ordered the grated radish tonkatsu set meal. You can get a free extra serving of rice. The katsudon dishes have slightly smaller portions of tonkatsu, making them more affordable. The tonkatsu set meal was quite generous. The tonkatsu was crispy and the cabbage was plentiful, making me very satisfied.

It's been a while since I had tonkatsu ☺️ When I walked in, the inside was spacious. They had a great lunch set menu with a choice of regular or large rice. The tonkatsu was crispy and the shrimp fry was big. The cabbage with light dressing made it a refreshing meal.

My husband and I stopped by after visiting the clinic. It's located at the intersection of Kawaramachi Marutamachi, with Katsudon Gen on the 1st floor and Bikkuri Donkey on the 2nd floor. We had been to Bikkuri Donkey recently. Both of us ordered the B lunch set. I can't eat shrimp fry, so the B lunch comes with tonkatsu and karaage. It was a generous portion and only 870 yen! It's a great deal if you're not worried about calories. The tonkatsu was delicious as usual. I would recommend it to those who don't mind checking their weight after eating.

I visited this place for a late lunch at the southeast corner of Kawaramachi Maruta-cho on the 1st floor (2nd floor is a Don Quijote store). The interior had a clean and organized layout with counter seats and tables spaced out just right. I ordered the plum and shiso cutlet, which may be a seasonal item. The fluffy cabbage salad and the not too overpowering plum and shiso flavor paired well with the freshly fried cutlet, which turned out to be surprisingly filling. The rich miso soup made the rice even more enjoyable, and I left the restaurant feeling satisfied. Thank you for the meal.

I ordered a pork cutlet bowl with miso soup for lunch, and the cutlet was really hot. The breading was crispy and the taste was delicious. I would like to visit this restaurant again if I am nearby.

I stopped by because it was open on New Year's Eve. My go-to is the tonkatsu with shrimp fry. I like that the sauce isn't already on it so I can choose different flavors. The tonkatsu restaurant's miso soup is always delicious, right? ^ ^

Chain restaurant specializing in pork cutlet dishes. I ordered the pork cutlet with egg on top, but it didn't come with miso soup as I expected. Instead, it had a clear broth soup.
