As soon as I arrived in Kyoto, I searched for a restaurant to fill my stomach. I didn't expect it to be open early in the morning, but it pleasantly surprised me. The squid liver salad was so delicious that I immediately ordered some sake. The chilled Junmai sake from Kamikura was fantastic. The sashimi exceeded my expectations. The pickled water eggplant also paired well with the sake. I'll have to order more sake. Let's keep it a secret that the kushikatsu was smaller than expected (laughs).

Eating delicious pickles and drinking in the morning is the height of luxury. The restaurant is open from 6 am. I was planning to have breakfast, but I ended up having a drink first. It's like the pot calling the kettle black... I came up with excuses for myself while enjoying delicious pickles and drinking in the morning. The big screen TV in the restaurant is playing "Tora-san" movies. I watched Tora-san while drinking and coming up with excuses. Breakfast is decided: salmon ochazuke. I found a good excuse early in the morning near Teramachi Street and Nishiki Market.

I stayed near Kawaramachi and took my usual morning walk to Yasaka Shrine before wandering around. I found a restaurant near Nishiki Market that opens from 6 am. When I visited around 8 am, there was already one customer. They had a morning set menu, but I decided to start with a bottle of Sapporo Red Star beer. I also ordered their specialty dish, Ham Cabbage, which was ham topped with plenty of cabbage with a delicious seasoning. Adding some shichimi spice made it even better. I also got a side of macaroni salad and a lemon chu-hi. The chu-hi was surprisingly strong for the morning, maybe made with awamori instead of shochu. The macaroni salad tasted homemade. I will definitely visit again when I stay around Kawaramachi.

This day was the last day of the trip. After leaving Cafe Delica (which I reviewed including this day a month ago), I visited Kennin-ji Temple, the first destination. Then, it was lunchtime and I didn't have any plans, so I was at a loss for a moment. I bought Shibazuke at Kamado Kama Gion store and thought about rushing into Doi Shibazuke Honpo Gion store, but I didn't really want to eat a lot, so I skipped it and decided to enjoy some sake. I thought of a place in Nishiki Market and headed there immediately. I wanted to go to Tachinomi Kaka, but there was no room to stand, so I chose the adjacent place. It's the same group, so there's no problem. I was seated at a table and looked at the menu. They had a lunch set, so I ordered that. You could choose between draft beer or the local sake "Matsumoto," and I was in the mood for beer, so I chose the former. Pickled vegetables were served as an appetizer (it's a pickled vegetable shop after all), and when I was drinking, the sausage tempura arrived. It went surprisingly well with the batter and was delicious. The potato salad was also good. I thought about having another drink, but I wanted to visit another place, so I decided to end it there and left the restaurant.

I visited a cafeteria that serves alcohol from the morning, out of curiosity. Their "morning" menu consists of sake and snacks. Surprisingly, there were also foreigners there, and it was fun to communicate with them. When asked if Japanese people drink in the morning, I emphatically denied it. Please note that if you cannot drink alcohol, you may not be welcomed. Even if you are there for the morning menu, this place is still an izakaya (Japanese pub).

The miso soup with sake lees was delicious, with a strong umami flavor. The ingredients were not too many, but the flavor was rich, possibly due to the broth. The pickles were a bit less sour than I prefer personally, but it's understandable for serving a wide range of customers. Overall, I was satisfied with the meal. Thank you!

I stayed at a hotel without meals included, so I went to Nishiki Market in search of breakfast. I visited "Nishiki Market Shokudo Takakura-ya Shoten" located on the east side of Nishiki Market for the first time. This restaurant opens at 6:00 am. I ordered the Morning Set with a draft beer. It came with macaroni salad and pickled eggplant and cucumber mix. A cold beer in the morning, perfect amount of mayo in the macaroni, it was the best combination for the first drink of the day. I finished with the Ham and Egg set meal, with deep-fried sweet potato as a side dish. The miso soup with pumpkin and onion was comforting. It was a restaurant where you could drink and eat early in the morning. Thank you for the meal!

I went to a restaurant with two friends for a daytime drink. We randomly chose a place around Nishiki thinking we could drink there during the day. When we looked at the sign, it said you can drink from 6 in the morning, which was quite unusual! I entered around 2 in the afternoon. They had a set with edamame, sweet potato fries, and a drink for 880 yen, so I ordered one. The other two ordered drinks separately and we also got a potato salad for 380 yen and assorted pickles for 480 yen to share. The atmosphere was lively and the staff was very friendly. After drinking too much the previous day, I overslept significantly and struggled to get out of bed due to the hangover. However, I forced myself to get up and hurriedly showered before leaving the hotel. As time passed, it was approaching noon and I was starting to feel better, with my energy returning and my appetite coming back. I decided to visit a restaurant that had caught my eye before - a shop run by Bucky Inoue, known for his izakaya establishments like Hyakunen and Tachinomi Kaka. Located near the entrance of Nishiki Street from the Nishiki Tenmangu Shrine, it was bustling with customers, but luckily I managed to secure a seat at the counter. I ordered the conger eel rice bowl set, which was served with side dishes and pickles. I couldn't resist ordering a lunch beer to go with it. The spring roll salad and pea and egg dish were delicious, and the conger eel bowl was flavorful without being overpowering. Although the eel could have been a bit softer, it was still tasty. After satisfying my hunger, I left the restaurant without ordering more drinks. I look forward to visiting again for a lunchtime drink.

Nishiki Market is constantly changing, and although it has become more lively, the new atmosphere feels a bit lonely yet exciting. This shop is a sister shop next to the pickled vegetable shop and the standing bar Kaga-san, and it has just opened. The amazing thing is that it opens from 8 am! Whether you're coming back from a night shift or a morning drinker, you can enjoy a cozy breakfast here. Of course, if you still want to drink, you can do that too, starting from the morning. I was looking for a place to have a drink during the day, but many places were closed or not open yet, leaving me in a bit of a refugee situation. Finally, this shop was open as per its regular hours. There were a few older male regulars sitting separately, while the staff were all young. I sat at the counter. The long red table resembles the Kyogoku Stand, and the mirrored design is similar too. They have a set for a light drink, including two small dishes and a drink for around 1000 yen. I ordered normally since I wanted more. It's impressive that they have awamori available. The small dishes allow you to enjoy a variety of flavors. The mackerel miso was delicious. They also served miso soup as a service, which seems to be available all the time. It tasted different from what I expected, perhaps due to the ingredients or the miso used. But delicious soup always brings happiness. They have a variety of rice dishes and side dishes, so being open from morning is likely to make them popular. The ham and eggs also look tasty. I'll definitely visit again soon!

I searched for a place where I could drink in the morning. It seems that the set meals finish early, so if you want to drink, you might have to ask the staff in the middle of the day to let you in. The kimchi platter was outstanding. The white kimchi was like a medicinal dish, similar to mul kimchi... It had a unique taste that I really liked. This place belongs to the author of this book.

I recently started my evening at my favorite restaurant, Takakuraya. They have a beer set and delicious sashimi, it's perfect! The staff is also very friendly and welcoming. It's easy to stop by for a drink during the day as well. The second floor seating is nice and relaxing. I will definitely visit again.

Visited for the first time around 8:15 on a Friday (holiday) in February 2022. "Takakuraya Shoten" is a restaurant opened by a pickle shop located near the eastern end of Nishiki Market street. They open from 6:00 in the morning. There were no other customers at the time of my visit. The menu is a single sheet on the table, with morning menu and drink menu options, as well as daily recommendations on a whiteboard (which included dishes like yellowtail sashimi, horse mackerel fry, and oyster fry). This time, I ordered the Morning Menu set which included a draft beer, macaroni salad, and pickles for 580 yen. It was quite appealing to have an alcohol set available in the morning. The set was served and I enjoyed the macaroni salad and delicious pickles. The beer went down smoothly. Wanting to have a little more to drink, I decided to try the "Miyaginotsuru" Ryukyu Awamori, which was advertised as only available here outside of Okinawa. I ordered the set which included the awamori with water, a small dish, and pickles, adding an extra small dish. The "Miyaginotsuru" was quite good. I enjoyed it with the two small dishes and finished my meal. It was a delightful morning drinking experience. Thank you for the meal! Although I only drank this time, two other solo customers who arrived later were enjoying a hearty breakfast with the Ham and Egg set, which looked delicious. I might try having breakfast here next time.

I visited the restaurant a little after 7 o'clock. This restaurant is located in Nishiki Market in Kyoto and serves breakfast from 6 am. I had the "Traditional Spicy Salted Salmon Set Meal" (680 yen) this time, but they also offer various other breakfast set meals. The set meal included salted salmon, miso soup, pickles, and rice. The salted salmon was cut into cubes and looked very salty. When I picked it up with chopsticks, it was firm and when I took a bite, it was very salty, but when eaten with rice, it was delicious. The miso soup had a rich broth with plenty of mushrooms, leeks, and burdock, and the saltiness was mild. The pickled dish had small fish, cucumbers, and seaweed, and was simple but tasty. The pickles included radish, eggplant, and cucumber, all of which were delicious. Although the salted salmon was very salty, the miso soup, pickles, and pickled dish were well-balanced and delicious. This restaurant not only serves breakfast from early morning but also offers alcohol, so it's a great place to stop by when exploring Nishiki Market.

A food hall produced by the pickles shop "Nishiki Takakura-ya" has opened in Nishiki Market. They are open from 8 am and offer a variety of dishes such as miso soup with lots of ingredients, rice from Takashima, pickles, and dishes that go well with sake. The "Delicious Rice Set" (380 yen) includes rice, hearty miso soup, and pickles, and you can choose your favorite side dish to complete your meal. I chose the "Tuna Sashimi" (480 yen) and was pleasantly surprised by the thick and large slices of tuna. It can also be enjoyed as a tuna bowl. There are few places in Nishiki Market where you can have breakfast, so this place is sure to be popular.
