Thoughts of the moon have been turned into traditional Japanese sweets. The "Tsukishiro" shaped like the moon uses Hokkaido red beans. When you take a bite, the flavor of red beans spreads throughout your mouth. It is shaped using agar and goes well with tea. Mamesei is a long-established store in Kyoto that sells bean sweets such as Echigawa Goshiki Beans and Suhamadango. They also have beans for Setsubun.

The board product is Suhama Dango ♬ My partner purchased it at a department store's specialty confectionery shop... It wasn't even in my options. But when I tried it, it was delicious (^◇^)!! It looks very sweet... I didn't buy it, but you never know until you try it, right? I'm planning to go to Kyoto for the first time in a while, so I want to visit the main store there٩(^‿^)۶ Rent a bicycle from Demachiyanagi, head to Esblue, then to Mame Masae near Kyoto Gyoen♬ Wow! It's quite a long-established store with a dignified appearance. I heard it was founded 138 years ago... In Kyoto's terms, it's still relatively young or middle-aged, right?? The staff were friendly and let me try the products I was interested in♪ However! I'm interested in all of them (^^) I grabbed a basket and filled it with various items, including Suhama Dango... A half-cooked dumpling packed with the richness of roasted soybean flour (kinako) (^^) The sugar on the surface is also nice♬ Tsukishiro... How can I express it... Anyway, the red beans come out plump from the caramelized sugar... Sweet but delicious!!! The Kyoto Marumado... I don't know how to describe it. When it comes to souvenirs from Kyoto, I always thought of nama yatsuhashi. But I often see these three-colored Suzumadamochi as well, so I decided to try them. They are coated in sugar, which is unusual for dumplings, and they look firm and not soft. I couldn't imagine the taste and texture just by looking at them! When I tried them, they had a rough texture, yet slightly moist and sticky on the inside. The flavor is a mix of kinako (soybean flour) with a dominant sweetness of sugar, giving a natural taste of the ingredients. It would be perfect for those who like sweet treats or to enjoy with coffee or matcha in between.

On this weekend day, I miraculously managed to get a timed ticket for the extended exhibition period of the special exhibition "National Treasure: The Complete Works of Choju Giga" at the Tokyo National Museum, so I made a pilgrimage to Ueno. I entered at 4 p.m. and seeing the actual Choju Giga was truly amazing. It's surprising that there were people in Japan 800 to 900 years ago who had such expansive brushwork and solid drawing skills. It's understandable why it's designated as a national treasure and why many copies have been preserved. I viewed the first volume on a moving walkway, which was quite convenient for viewing the long horizontal scrolls. There was no typical congestion, which was nice. I also found the lesser-known second, third, and fourth volumes interesting to view. Lastly, I found a product at the museum shop from a long-established bean confectionery shop called "Taste Journey" for 540 yen. It comes in a package with Choju Giga illustrations and contains what is known as "onoro beans," which are peanuts wrapped in rice flour and baked. In the museum shop, most of the sweets are usually sweet, but this one is a mix of spicy and sweet items. I bought a bag thinking it would be a good accompaniment to alcohol. Inside are salty, sweet, red, and green flavors, totaling eight varieties. The crispy rice flour and peanuts make a good combination. When I thought about it, it's similar to Kaki no Tane, so it makes sense that they go well together. With various flavors like seaweed and shrimp, it surprisingly tasted delicious as a tea snack or beer accompaniment. Upon further research, I found out that the main store is located near the Kyoto Imperial Palace, quite far from Takayama Temple where Choju Giga is housed. I'm not sure how it ended up in the museum shop, but it seems to be a well-known product in Kyoto, as it is also sold in major department stores in Kyoto and at temples such as Kinkaku-ji, Ginkaku-ji, and Kiyomizu-dera. Once the situation with COVID-19 settles down and I can visit Kyoto, I would like to buy it locally.

The bean sweets from Azuki no Azuki are something I've been picking at home since I was a child, so it's hard to put into words my thoughts after eating them again. The wasabi soybeans are not just spicy, but the aroma of the beans that spreads in your mouth is richer than the typical snack-like bean sweets you find. As for the Kyoto Marumado, it has a waffle-like dough with roasted soybean flour cream sandwiched in between. I really want to eat some sushi-hama dango, but they don't last long... I want to eat some fresh sweets!

I received a variety of souvenirs from a friend, and among them was a bean confection from Azukiya called "Kyoto Machikado." My friend knew that I like wasabi, so they chose a bean confection with wasabi for me. I tried the wasabi peanuts right away. The strong flavor of wasabi comes through, with a nice combination of seaweed and soy sauce. Once I started eating, I couldn't stop - I kept munching on them. They are perfect as a snack with beer. I enjoyed them very much.

When I come to Maruta-cho, I always end up stopping by the main store of Mamesei. The old building with a large display of colorful beans gives off a sense of history. There are various types available, but I always go for the same ones. They are perfect as a snack with beer. The curry beans are soft fried soybeans with curry powder, making them spicy and very delicious. They are my favorite. The wasabi beans, as the name suggests, are soybeans with wasabi and chopped seaweed. These ones are spicy with a sharp wasabi kick. My wife prefers these. The prices are reasonable too, which I appreciate.

Tea Dango [Energy 98kcal Carbohydrates 24g] / Founded in 1884, this historic Japanese confectionery shop offers tea dango. This was the year when the Tokyo Meteorological Observatory announced Japan's first weather forecast. The tea dango is a simple dango without any filling. The Uji matcha flavor is very strong but also delicate. It really captures the essence of the Japanese spirit, even for a Taiwanese person like me.

I think this might be my first time buying traditional Japanese sweets here. I bought the "Kurimochi" because of the packaging. Inside, there are mochi balls about the size of chocolate balls packed tightly. As the name suggests, there are chestnuts inside the mochi. The chestnuts are candied, with just the right amount of sweetness, which pairs well with the soft texture of the mochi. It's a good size for snacking, but on the other hand, once you start eating, you might not be able to stop... This is a delicious treat that I'm glad I came across. I definitely want to buy it again next autumn!

There are many different products available, but if you're unsure, black soybeans (black soybean paste) are a good choice. The beans are reminiscent of Tamba Sasayama, but they are also a specialty of Kyoto, particularly in the area around Sonobe just north of Kyoto City, which is connected to Sasayama in Hyogo Prefecture by a highway. I purchased some at a product fair at Seibu Ikebukuro this time. The quality is different. You can find black soybean paste at good grocery stores or dried goods stores. However, there is value in buying from a long-established shop.

I had seen this dango somewhere before, but didn't know where to buy it. The nearest location to the main store of Azuki Masahon is Marutamachi Station. The Azuki Masahon's Suhama Dango is a famous three-colored dango in Kyoto, along with the tea dango. It is made by kneading kinako with water syrup, and when you put it in your mouth, the taste of kinako slowly comes out, with quite a sweetness. It has a chewy texture due to the water syrup, even though it is a kinako mochi. Tea is necessary, but surprisingly, it goes well with coffee. I decided to eat one piece every day.

On the second day in Kyoto, I went to a photo session with my favorite geisha in Gion Kabu, while my husband went to participate in the Setsubun pilgrimage. We visited Yoshida Shrine, Yasaka Shrine, Mimurotoji Temple, and Kitano Tenmangu Shrine in that order, receiving lucky beans at each shrine. The lucky beans from Yoshida Shrine, Yasaka Shrine, and Kitano Tenmangu Shrine didn't have any labels, so we weren't sure where they were from, but the lucky beans from Mimurotoji Temple had the name "Mame Masashi" on them. When we opened the bag, we found a few colored beans along with soybeans. Even though they were just a few, the colored beans had a hint of cinnamon scent. The soybeans also had a faint cinnamon scent. We also received lucky beans from other shrines, but they were all the same (maybe from Mame Masashi?). We received beans equal to our age and scattered the rest in the garden, saying "Good luck to us!" for the birds to share. This year, there have been significant changes in our lives, and things have been quite busy, but we hope to get through it safely.

Kyoto's traditional bean confectionery shop "Mame Masu Co., Ltd." produces and sells Kyoto specialties such as Isegawa Goshiki Mame, Tsukishiro, and Suhama Dango, as well as traditional Japanese sweets and bean confectionery. This time, I got my hands on Wasabi Peanuts 70g (100g for 360 yen). The distinctive feature of Wasabi Peanuts is the sharp wasabi flavor that hits you! It is a masterpiece that combines the lingering taste of Kyoto-style light dashi flavor and the rich flavor of large peanuts. Perfect for beer snacks. "Mame Masu Co., Ltd." was founded in 1884 by its founder Masayoshi Tsunoda as a bean and cereal merchant in Isegawa, Kyoto (the same location as today). In 1887, he developed Goshiki Satoukibi (now Isegawa Goshiki Mame) and sold it at Kyoto Station, which became a Kyoto specialty. Today, they continue to produce over 30 types of carefully crafted bean confectionery, as well as Kyoto specialties such as Isegawa Goshiki Mame, Suhama Dango, and Tsukishiro, focusing on delicious beans.

My favorite bean shop in Marutamachi. I always get beans from here for Setsubun bean throwing. This shop has a long history, and a big display of colorful beans catches your eye next to the sign. On the way to lunch, we stopped by and as usual, my wife bought a variety of beans. While browsing the shelves, I noticed fava beans. I used to eat fried fava beans a lot as a child. It's nostalgic. But what I found was curry-flavored fava beans. Curry beans. It's a simple flavor, but for some reason, it's addictive. I can't stop eating them. They were perfect with beer tonight.

I forgot to ask about the history of the Polipoli shop, but looking at the photos, there is a colorful skewered five-color bean dish. It looks antique. The large antique clock has a history of about 80 years. Mr. Mairevi recommended curry and sansho pepper, but I was drawn to the shrimp peas. They used to come in mixed rice crackers when I was a child. There were soy sauce flavored rice crackers, shrimp senbei, fluffy fried red and white snacks, dried fish, and shrimp peas. I bought the sansho pepper and shrimp peas, and enjoyed snacking on them while watching TV. It's not from Calbee, but I can't stop eating them. They're not incredibly delicious, but for some reason, I can't resist them. Keep up the good work with your shop, Polipoli.

The cute five-colored beans are used for good luck, with colors such as cherry blossom pink, white, green, brown, and yellow. They have a charming shape that is not perfectly round, giving them a handmade feel. The lemon-colored bean looks delicious. I wonder what they taste like? The brown one tastes like cinnamon, the green one tastes like seaweed, the white and cherry blossom ones taste like sugar, and the lemon one is a secret (laughs). It is believed that eating these beans will bring good luck. In Kyoto, people eat one bean for each year of their age. I will have a lemon-colored bean for warding off bad luck. It seems that they are sold for a limited time by Yoshida-san during Setsubun. It reminded me of the Otsu-e paintings such as "Buddhist Chanting by Demons" or "Demons Bathing". The Otsu-e paintings originated in Otsu during the Edo period. The use of colors in kimono is also fascinating, incorporating seasonal colors. Using colors that evoke spring flowers can create a gentle atmosphere. Using contrasting colors can create a sense of balance. Using eye-catching colors in displays is effective. Showing a variety of colors can expand the color image. The beauty of Japanese colors is truly remarkable. It's all about using colors effectively. The product I received as a souvenir is from a well-known bean specialty store in Kyoto. It seems that their warabi mochi is also famous as a gift item. Upon trying it, I found that the mochi is a bit hard for warabi mochi, and the sweetness is strong. Unlike typical warabi mochi, it seems to have a longer shelf life, so it is overall less moist and quite sweet. It is not individually wrapped, which may be a bit inconvenient for sharing with a large group, but the taste is elegant and unlikely to be disliked by anyone. Additionally, being a bean specialty store, the smooth yellow powder is a distinctive feature. It is easy to see why this product is popular for personal consumption.

Curry flavored edamame. There's no way it's not delicious! Spicy with just the right amount of salt. The only problem is once you start eating, you can't stop!

A famous shop known for traditional bean sweets and bite-sized three-colored Suhamagashi dumplings in pink, yellow, and matcha flavors, popular even overseas. The head of the Misyo school of the 34 schools of ikebana in Kyoto, Prince Takaho Sasao, introduced this shop as his favorite in a travel book. The main store offers a rich selection of products unique to the store, such as the new "Kyoto Machikado" series (featuring packaging inspired by Kinkaku-ji, Fushimi Inari, and Maiko). I personally love the Cream Goshikimame in the pink packaging. It's a fun moment deciding who to send these treats to. Recently, some bean sweets are available for purchase at the souvenir corner in JR Kyoto Station.

I went to buy some sweets. Speaking of Kyoto sweets, "Igawa Goshiki Mame" is a must-have. It is a colorful confectionery featuring red, white, yellow, green, and brown beans used in imperial celebrations. It has a refreshing sweetness from high-quality sugar. Delicious. "Suhama Dango" is a confectionery made of kinako (soybean flour) and starch syrup. Delicious and goes well with coffee or black tea. "Tsukishiro" is a confectionery made of red beans wrapped in agar in the shape of a full moon. Light and tasty. "Curry Beans" are fried broad beans coated with curry powder. Delicious. All of them are always delicious. These are famous Kyoto sweets. Thank you for the meal.
