Visit on May 3, 2022. I used to buy from this shop often when I came to Sugamo, but this was my first time since I started posting on Tabelog. It seems to be a shop with many titles, such as the originator of the famous Sugamo salt daifuku. It was around 2 PM. The line at the storefront was as usual, but the turnover was fast so there wasn't much of a wait. When it was my turn in line, I ordered and paid on the right side. I bought 5 pieces of salt daifuku for 650 yen and 5 pieces of bean daifuku for 650 yen to go. I tasted the bean daifuku first. The outer mochi is thin, with plenty of smooth red bean paste inside and a moderate sweetness. The beans add a nice texture. On the other hand, the salt daifuku has less red bean paste, but with each bite, you can taste the saltiness along with the refined sweetness of the red bean paste. The contrast of salt enhances the umami of the red bean paste. That's why there is less red bean paste in it. If you haven't tried it yet, please try this delicious daifuku that you won't get tired of.

I love Japanese sweets but I'm not very familiar with them, so I wanted to try a variety of treats! I found this famous shop and decided to visit. I tried salted daifuku for the first time in my life! It was delicious and went well with tea! I've had mitarashi dango before, but the mitarashi dango from this shop was incredibly delicious!

[First Visit on September 23, 2023] When I exited from Exit A3 of the Toei Subway Sugamo Station and walked towards the opposite direction of the JR station, I entered the "Sugamo Jizo-dori Shopping Street" and soon saw a shop on my right. It was a Saturday, and after having curry for lunch in Kanda, I decided to explore some Japanese sweets shops. The first shop I visited was here. When I arrived around 2:30 pm, there was a long line of more than 20 people. It took more than 10 minutes just to make a purchase. This shop is known for its "Original Salt Daifuku" as indicated by the noren curtain. I decided to buy one each of the "Original Salt Daifuku" and the "Special Salt Daifuku". That night, I tried them out! ① Original Salt Daifuku - The mochi had started to harden a bit, probably because more than 6 hours had passed since I bought it. It's best to eat it right after purchase. The mochi, along with the surrounding powder, contributed to its firmness. When I cut it in half, I noticed that the overall moisture content, including the sweet bean paste, was on the lower side. As for the taste, the saltiness was stronger than expected, and the sweetness was mild. This flavor suited my preference perfectly as I don't like overly sweet sweets. The salt enhanced the sweetness, creating a perfect balance. I could eat a lot of these! ② Special Salt Daifuku - I tried this one right after the first one. It was individually packaged, which may have helped maintain the mochi's texture better than the first one. The mild saltiness spread throughout the mouth, complementing the subtly sweet bean paste. I wonder if the bean paste is the same in both daifuku. The use of very refined sweet bean paste adds to the appeal. The attention to detail in the packaging and the use of "Ogasawara salt" may be why this one is labeled as "Special". I would recommend this one, especially if you want to prevent deterioration over time. It's only a 10 yen difference! I ended up eating both daifuku in quick succession. If these daifuku had been overly sweet for their size, I might have reached my limit, but surprisingly, I could still eat more! I should have bought more. Considering the size and taste, the price is quite cheap! I will definitely revisit this place. Thank you for the delicious treats.

Grandma's favorite neighborhood in Harajuku, Sugamo. Despite being on the Yamanote Line, it has a traditional downtown atmosphere with many long-established shops. One of the specialties of Sugamo is the salted daifuku! Sweet and salty is always a winning combination! This time, for the Higan festival, I tried the ohagi for ¥160 and the salted daifuku for ¥130. First, the ohagi... mmm, this is delicious! The sweetness of the mochi rice and the smooth sweet bean paste are irresistible. I will definitely come back here next year for more of this simple yet delicious treat. And now, the famous salted daifuku... oh, so good! Simply sweet and salty! Truly the best of simplicity! It's no wonder this popular shop is a long-standing favorite! Highly recommended, I would love to visit this shop again!

I went for a walk to Sugamo, visited the Throwing Away Bad Luck Jizo, and bought the original salted daifuku from "Mizuno." I purchased it from a friendly saleswoman at the shop, and the moderate distance felt just right. The Sugamo Throwing Away Bad Luck Jizo shopping street has a pleasant atmosphere with just the right amount of liveliness. As for the salted daifuku, the mochi is delicious with a good chewy texture. The salted daifuku has a refreshing taste that I love. It feels like I could eat many of them. It's a wonderful salted daifuku at a reasonable price.

I tried the salted daifuku and bean daifuku from a selection of top 100 stores. The prices were reasonable and the taste was delicious. The Togenuki Jizo Shotengai is filled with daifuku and traditional Japanese sweets shops. I don't see much difference between the top 100 stores and the others in the shopping street. In terms of traditional Japanese sweets, it seems that the hard work of the Japanese people over the years has led to a lack of variation in taste. Chain stores like Taneya, Toraya, and Kan Shouan, on the other hand, are able to create modern and delicious products by updating existing items and trying new things. Personally, I don't believe that something being nostalgic automatically makes it delicious.

Jizo Street was lively with a festival, featuring mikoshi (portable shrine) and floats. I bought salted daifuku, bean daifuku, bean mochi, and sushi from the well-known store "Mizuno." Despite the line, the staff efficiently served customers, so I didn't have to wait long. The sushi set included 3 rolls of kampyo maki and 2 pieces of inari sushi. The kampyo maki had a gentle flavor, while the inari sushi was not too sweet and refreshing. The bean mochi was tasty, but it felt like there were fewer beans in it. However, the bean daifuku didn't give that impression. The salted daifuku was simply delicious, with no noticeable saltiness.

This is a traditional Japanese confectionery shop located in Sugamo shopping street. As it is a shopping street, you can count on its stability without any irregular closures. I tried salted daifuku for the first time, and the extra umami from the salt was indeed proven by the salted watermelon, which was delicious as expected... The texture and flavor of the brown sugar dumplings further impressed me... The firmness and taste of the red bean paste were excellent.

A traditional Japanese confectionery shop. I bought the most popular salted daifuku and bean daifuku. Both the salted daifuku and bean daifuku were priced at less than 200 yen, very affordable. The mochi skin of the daifuku was firm, made with simple traditional ingredients, so it might harden over time. The salted daifuku was delicious, but the beans in the bean daifuku were a bit hard. I was also interested in the red rice they were selling, but I had already eaten a lot, so I decided to pass on it this time.

TACKNMON

Today's snack is from the famous traditional Japanese confectionery shop "Mizuno," located about a 5-minute walk from JR Sugamo Station on Jizo Street Shopping Arcade. Mizuno was established in 1923 in front of Sugamo Station, originally under the name Darumaya, and has been well-loved as a local specialty in Sugamo. The original idea for their signature salted daifuku was born from the desire of Mizuno's predecessor, Ryukichi, to create a specialty and revitalize the town. The second generation, Saburo, drew inspiration from his experience in salt production in Kujukuri Beach, Chiba Prefecture, and the local "salted an bean mochi" to create a unique and refreshing sweetness daifuku with a distinct Sugamo flavor. Today's snacks include: - Dorayaki (200 yen): A comforting and delicious treat, with the shop's mascot, Sugamon, faintly drawn on the surface. - Kibi Dango (130 yen): A delightful treat loved by various animals, with a tasty kinako coating. - Mitarashi Dango (110 yen): A popular choice, with a sweet and satisfying flavor that makes you want to have another. - Original Salted Daifuku (130 yen): The flagship product of Mizuno, made with red awa and Ogasawara salt, premium mochi rice, and Hokkaido red beans, offering a unique and delicious combination of flavors. I also tried the Akameshi (red rice) for 320 yen, influenced by the Sunday drama "VIVANT." It was a delightful experience to enjoy red rice again after a long time. Mizuno is famous for its Original Salted Daifuku, but all the other traditional Japanese confections were equally delicious. I hope this long-standing shop continues to thrive. Thank you for the wonderful treats. Cheers!

The famous traditional Japanese sweets shop in Sugamo, "Original Salt Daifuku," has been selling its products directly from the factory in Sugamo without relying on commissioned manufacturing since its founding. I wanted to buy their red rice as well, but it was already sold out. It seems to sell out quickly these days. I bought the original salt daifuku instead. It definitely has a salty taste. I ate one the next day, and the mochi was a bit hard. I recommend eating it on the same day for sure.

Takeout [Food Log: Tokyo's Top 100 Traditional Japanese Sweets and Dessert Shops 2023] - Original Salted Daifuku ¥130 (per piece, tax included) - Mitarashi Dango ¥110 (per serving, tax included) In the Sugamo Jizo Shopping Street, there are several long-established traditional Japanese sweets shops such as "Sugamoen" and "Iseya Kashiten". However, the origin of Sugamo's specialty "Salted Daifuku" is known to be from the shop called "Original Salted Daifuku Mizuno". This popular shop attracts long lines of customers daily in search of their famous salted daifuku. This year, it was selected as one of the top 100 traditional Japanese sweets and dessert shops on Food Log. If you visit around 2:30 PM on a weekday, you may be lucky to find no line. They offer a variety of traditional Japanese sweets such as the "Original Salted Daifuku", regular red bean daifuku, dorayaki, and kusa mochi displayed in the showcase. I purchased the "Original Salted Daifuku" and the "Mitarashi Dango". The saltiness of the daifuku was milder than expected. The filling was smooth red bean paste, with a mild sweetness overall. The mochi was stretchy, but the daifuku as a whole felt slightly lacking. I speculate that they may have kept the flavors mild to cater to the elderly residents in the area. The mochi of the Mitarashi Dango was firm and chewy, with a strong sweet and savory soy sauce glaze. I plan to try daifuku from other shops and compare them with this one next time.

Located about a 4-minute walk from Sugamo Station, this shop offers Salt Daifuku for 140 yen. I stopped by after a long time passing by. I ate the Daifuku right away, and the salt flavor was actually quite mild. It had a very gentle taste, with the sweetness of the ingredients being the most characteristic. It seems like a flavor that would be liked by a wide range of age groups, from children to the elderly. I would like to visit again if I have the chance.

A long-established Japanese confectionery shop located in the shopping street from Sugamo Station to Togenuki Jizo, selected as one of the top 100 traditional Japanese sweets shops in Tokyo in 2023 by Tabelog. Founded in 1937 by the Japanese confectioner Ryukichi Mizuno, who trained for 15 years at Shinbashi Seigetsudo before opening his own shop. Mizuno was called up for the Pacific War, causing a temporary closure, but he reopened at the current location after the war. The Salt Daifuku was developed by Mizuno with the desire to revitalize the Sugamo area, drawing on his experience of salt production in Kujukuri to create the product. Initially, it was challenging as sweet treats were in demand, but the shift in taste preferences over time allowed it to become popular. This specialty of Sugamo can also be found in other shops in the area, offering variations in taste. The Daifuku, meaning "big fortune," is considered auspicious. The mochi is very soft, making it suitable even for elderly individuals. It makes a great souvenir as well. The glutinous rice used is the Kogane Mochi variety, with red beans sourced from Hokkaido and salt from Akō and Ogasawara. Mochi is carefully pounded in a stone mortar to create a firm Daifuku. They also have a special selection called Tokusen (premium) Salt Daifuku. The Akō salt might be exclusive to that. The Salt Daifuku costs 130 yen (cash payment). May a lot of good fortune come your way! ☺️

I stopped by on my way back from a stroll in Sugamo. It is said to be the origin of the famous salted daifuku in Sugamo. It is a daifuku in the shape of a small rectangular cake like a croquette, and as the name suggests, you can taste the saltiness. This might be a love-it-or-hate-it kind of treat. The mochi is soft and chewy, and delicious, while the sweet bean paste is not too sweet, making it a flavor that doesn't get boring.

Around 12:30 in the afternoon on Tuesday, I visited this shop located on Togenuki Jizo Street. There was only one customer ahead of me, but I was quickly asked for my order. They had two types of salted daifuku, a traditional one for 130 yen and a salt-focused one for 140 yen. I chose the latter as I was planning to eat it on the go, and they served it to me right away. They also provided a place to dispose of trash, which was convenient and affordable. It was a really hot day, so the saltiness of the daifuku was refreshing and delicious! Thank you for the meal. I will definitely visit again!

I bought it on the go. Since I was already there, I got a salt daifuku. It seems that if you buy only one, it's +2 yen (for the plastic wrap around the daifuku). The mochi was chewy, and the red bean paste was slightly less moist. It was a bit dry, but still delicious.

There are two types of salted rice cakes, "Special Selection" and "Original", but the "Original" one is recommended. The "Special Selection" comes in individually wrapped packaging with a logo, making it visually appealing. It is said that the salt used is different (from Ogasawara and Akaho salt). However, the original salted rice cake, which is the birthplace of salted rice cakes, is the way to go. It is a square-shaped white rice cake that is firm enough to be easily cut. When you taste it, you might expect a stronger saltiness, but surprisingly, the saltiness comes in the aftertaste. The rice cake is not sticky and has a good texture. The sweet bean paste is more like smooth red bean paste. It has a lower moisture content and a firm bean paste. Oh, I see. The sweetness is moderate. I understand now. The original salted rice cake is priced at 130 yen each. Just for reference, the carefully made salted rice cake costs 140 yen each. Thank you for the meal. It was nice to be able to try a famous one! I felt like the level of traditional Japanese sweets has been raised!

I stopped by at 10:40 on Sunday. On my way to get a temple stamp at the Tokei Jizo Temple, I bought a salted daifuku for 130 yen. Let's eat it right away! Itadakimasu. I was surprised by the softness of the daifuku mochi with the first bite! The refined sweetness of the anko inside was also surprisingly delicious. The smooth anko and the texture of the azuki beans tasted and felt great. I could eat as many of these as I wanted! Maybe it was freshly made, but it was incredibly delicious. So this is the origin of salted daifuku! Among the many traditional Japanese sweet shops in Sugamo, I praise myself for choosing this shop. Thank you for the meal!

This shop is said to be the originator of salt daifuku and is always crowded with people! I decided to try the special salt daifuku. They use salt from Ogasawara and Akō. I ate it about 5 hours after purchasing it, and I was a bit disappointed because the skin was a little hard. Maybe it would have been better to eat it right after buying it? Even though it was within the expiration date, it seems like it's best to eat it right away after purchasing it! The skin had a stronger saltiness than I expected, and the sweet bean paste was quite mild in sweetness. It might not be satisfying for those who like sweet daifuku. I think next time I'll eat it right after buying it. Thank you for the meal!

I got takeout from the famous shop "Mizuno" in Sugamo, including their original salted daifuku, bean daifuku, sugar-only sweet, and kusa mochi. The traditional taste of the salted daifuku, said to be the originator of salted daifuku, is irresistible with its salty sweet bean paste. The texture of the black beans in the bean daifuku is also amazing. All of the traditional Japanese sweets are delicious and I couldn't help but eat too much. They go perfectly with green tea. I am completely satisfied.
