I visited the restaurant on March 30, 2023, a little after 1 pm. The restaurant was about 60% full. I sat at a casual counter-style seat and ordered the obvious choice - Chinese soba. It's one of the joys of being a ramen lover to try out Chinese soba at different eateries. It only took a few minutes for the dish to arrive, and surprisingly, the Chinese soba had a rich broth for an udon shop. The noodles were on the softer side, and the chashu had a nice meaty flavor. I noticed there was duck mixed in, not sure if it was a special touch or a standard ingredient. I quickly finished the meal.

At the western end of Nishiki Koji, near Horikawa Street where there are no tourists in sight, when you step inside and slide open the door, you are greeted with a warm "ookini, oideyasu." Hearing this Kyoto dialect makes you feel instantly warm inside. The flavorful "oyako nanba soba" is unforgettable. It's a meal that makes you want to come back again. I hope this kind of restaurant continues to thrive for a long time... Thank you for the meal.

I had the Tsukimi soba. The egg hidden in the seaweed looked just like a hazy moon. The raw egg dropped into the hot broth had the white slightly solidified and the yolk was half-cooked. The landlady's Kyoto dialect was so thick that it was rare to hear nowadays, and I found myself listening intently. It's a restaurant with a calm atmosphere.

Lunch in Kyoto at Kawadoya Shiten Kawakyu for curry udon. I mistakenly ordered the hangover curry udon instead of the Chinese soba that I had written down in my notes, but it turned out to be the right choice with its comforting broth, spices, and heartiness. As the weather gets hotter, slurping udon while sweating is the best way to break down the alcohol accumulated in the liver. The cozy atmosphere of the restaurant, run by a husband and wife, with its Kyoto charm, made enjoying curry udon a delightful experience. Thank you for the meal.

I stopped by because it was nearby. The restaurant was empty due to COVID-19. The prices are reasonable. The mother works in the hall and the father in the kitchen. The mother provided very polite service, making me want to come back again. The noodles were not extremely delicious, but the cost performance is good. Also, the rice balls were tasty. The texture of the rice was good!! I support this place.

We went to Kawakyu, a branch of Kawadoya, for lunch on the 11th. I ordered oyakodon and small soba, while my companion ordered tempura soba. The oyakodon was generously topped with eggs and chicken, as shown in the photo. The soba and donburi were both sweet, which I liked. There were many menu options, so I will definitely add this restaurant to my lunch rotation. Thank you very much.

Visit in June 2019 at 1:00 PM. The restaurant had a rating of 3.10 on Tabelog with 11 reviews. I had the Oyakodon for 850 yen. The restaurant is located between Karasuma Station and Omiya Station, serving soba, udon, and rice bowl dishes. The atmosphere felt like a traditional soba restaurant. The menu was displayed outside, offering a variety of noodle dishes. The restaurant had a total of 22 seats, including 1 table for 2 people, 3 tables for 4 people, and 2 tatami rooms for 4 people each. The Oyakodon had a soft and moist egg with tender chicken, but the portion was a bit small. The broth was flavorful. It was easier to eat the Oyakodon with a wooden spoon rather than chopsticks. The daily special was chirashi sushi and udon, but they were sold out when I tried to order. The miso soup with tofu, fried vegetables, and seaweed was on the salty side. I added a touch of Sansho pepper towards the end for a different flavor and finished the meal. I would like to try their noodle dishes next time. Thank you for the meal.

"It's cold this week, isn't it? I had lunch at Kawaku. I had the daily an-kake with soba noodles. The an-kake here is quite substantial. It holds up until the end, so you can enjoy the soba and flavorful an-kake together until the last bite, keeping you warm. This element is important in an-kake dishes. The daily special comes with two rice balls and a small side dish, a great value set. Since it seems like cold days will continue, I'll definitely be back again soon ^^"

I used to often go to eat curry ramen at this place. The restaurant has a long history and a cozy atmosphere with attentive service. This time, I heard that their Chinese ramen (800 yen) was also delicious, so I decided to revisit after a long time. The soup is cloudy, and it comes with 5 thick slices of chashu made from braised pork belly, chopped green onions, and bean sprouts. The hot soup and thick noodles make for a tasty combination. It has a nostalgic taste similar to Tokushima ramen, with no artificial seasonings. The bamboo shoots have a good texture and flavor, and there is a generous amount of it. Even when adding pepper, the flavor of the soup remains strong. I really enjoyed it. It's much better than your average ramen shop. Additionally, their set meals and udon are also delicious and a good deal.

I often visit Kawakyu and ordered the chilled Yamakake Soba for the first time, priced at 850 yen. I think it's perfect for hot weather. The soba noodles are topped with plenty of grated yamaimo, raw egg yolk, seaweed, and other traditional toppings. The simplicity of the ingredients allows you to fully enjoy the deliciousness. Dip the noodles in wasabi, pour the special broth over them, mix well, and enjoy. I believe that the best way to savor the flavor of soba noodles is by eating them cold. [Oyakodon Stroll: Course No.11] Looking for a place to have oyakodon for dinner, I came across this restaurant that caught my attention. After trying the oyakodon in Karasuma Oike, I wanted to try the fluffy Kansai-style oyakodon, so the picture of this oyakodon intrigued me. Beyond fluffy, it was gooey. It almost looked like a drink. The moment I opened the door, I was the first customer as there was no one else. The friendly lady who took my order made the experience pleasant and heartwarming. When the oyakodon arrived, it was gooey and soft. It truly felt like a Kansai-style drink-like oyakodon. The sweet and gentle taste of the dashi-infused egg or the egg-infused dashi, I'm not sure, was delightful. The crispy green onions mixed in added a nice texture. The chicken was large, tender, and had a good chewy texture, with a hint of sweetness from the fat. The rice was a bit softer, perhaps to complement the gooey oyakodon. Although it wasn't exactly in my strike zone of dashi flavors, I enjoyed the sweetness of this dish. It was a comforting and calming taste. I came with a big backpack, and at the end, the lady thanked me for coming all the way. It was heartwarming until the very end. Gion Festival night. Everywhere is crowded. Tired from walking, I stumbled upon this place near my hotel. A traditional soba restaurant. It felt nostalgic. I had curry nanban and cold kitsune soba. Nothing special, but the comforting taste was delicious. The staff was also very friendly. I feel like dropping by again.

I like this cozy soba noodle place. The broth is light yet flavorful, and when I add shichimi to the soba, it really helps me relax. I love the broth, so I always order the chopped kitsune soba. I enjoy how the kitsune absorbs the broth and becomes delicious. I also get a rice ball set for 850 yen. It's convenient for me because it's close to my workplace. August 2016 Revisit Exactly one year since my last visit. I had planned to come during the colder season this time, but once again it turned out to be a visit in the middle of summer. I was craving the sticky sweet oyakodon that I had last time. This time, I had the "Tempura and Egg Rice Bowl (950 yen)" and added a mini udon. The egg and tempura had the same sweet flavor as the oyakodon. Ahh, I just love this sweet, sticky egg so much. It's a taste I find myself craving at least once a year. As always, the service from the wife was lovely. August 2015 First Visit Located on Nishioji Nishikikoji Nishikikikyo, I decided to try "Kawadoya Shiten Kawakyu" because of its good reviews. The shop is run by a friendly elderly couple. There is a washroom at the back, making it seem like a home-based shop. The menu is extensive, but I opted for the oyakodon with mini soba or udon set for 250 yen. What I ordered: - Oyakodon (850 yen) - Mini soba (250 yen) It was ready in about 15 minutes! The oyakodon had a sticky egg. It looked similar to Maruki in Nishiki Market and Hisago in Gion. The flavor of the broth spread throughout my mouth with the first bite. It was quite sweet, but not overly so. I personally really enjoyed the taste. The consistency of the sauce was just right, coating the rice evenly. A very stomach-friendly dish. I wish they could deliver when I have a cold... (laughs) It was the best oyakodon I've had recently. It was delicious. You can choose between hot or cold soba. Let's come back for warm soba and oyakodon when it gets colder.
