Accommodation for a family trip in Kyoto is at "Shuhokaku" inn. There was a little hiccup with the room, but dinner was plentiful. Starting with Kyoto-style obanzai, we had sashimi, chawanmushi, hot pot, and fried food. The rice dish was crab kamameshi. For dessert, we had apple compote, persimmons, and kinako pudding. Chiya and Chihiro had the elementary school menu, which included fried food, sashimi, and meat. Yamato had the preschooler menu, which seemed to be non-cooking items like fried food and obanzai bento. Mikoto was treated as an accompanying preschooler, so everyone shared with her. We walked a lot today, so we must be hungry, right? A drink was included, so kids had juice while adults could choose sake or even non-alcoholic beer. The portions were generous, and we managed to finish most of it. Thank you for the feast. The price for just the food is unknown since it was part of a travel package. It seems to be a relatively affordable inn based on the food log rating of 3.20 (as of 11/07/2020).

During a business trip to Kyoto, my wife came to visit, so we decided to stay at a traditional inn in Kyoto for one night. I found this hotel and made a reservation. We enjoyed a meal of nine small dishes beautifully arranged. The duck hot pot was delicious with a rich kombu broth. The buckwheat noodles for the final course were also very tasty. The price after New Year's was around 20,000 yen for two people with two meals included, which was a great deal. It was a satisfying dinner for the night, and we were able to experience a different way of staying compared to a regular hotel.

During my trip to Kyoto, I stayed at this inn. The access from the station was good, and I was looking for a place where my family of five could stay in the same room at a reasonable price, so I found Shuhoenkan and made a reservation. The plan included breakfast and dinner, and although our stay was short (2 nights, 3 days), I was surprised by the luxurious dinner on the first night. There were many dishes, and they were all delicious. They cooked mixed rice right in front of us, and they made chestnut rice and crab mixed rice, which were both very tasty. In the end, we ended up having dinner and breakfast at Shuhoenkan every day. I was also happy that the menu was different on the first and second days. The facilities were also convenient to use and the stay was comfortable. Thank you very much.

I stayed at Hotel Shuho-gaku near Gojo Station in Kyoto. The room was a traditional Japanese style room and I was able to relax comfortably. It was quite cold in winter, but the room was warm and cozy. I chose the breakfast plan for this stay. When I went to the dining area in the morning, a delicious homemade tofu, simmered dish, and tasty fish were prepared. I usually don't eat much for breakfast, but eating in the morning somehow made me feel energized. Thank you for the meal!

I stayed in Kyoto for 1 night and 2 days on September 16-17, 2018. The location was not very convenient, with the nearest station being Kiyomizu Gojo Station, which requires one transfer from Kyoto Station. However, access to Gion, Higashiyama, and Kiyomizu Temple from here is excellent. Free kimono rental is a nice touch for female guests. The interior has more of a traditional Japanese inn feel rather than a hotel. The room was a simple Japanese-style room and was well cleaned, although there was no towel at the sink, which was a downside. [Dinner] The meal was satisfying in terms of taste and portion size. The 9-course appetizer was excellent, and the sashimi was fresh and had a good texture. [Breakfast] It was not a buffet, but everything was prepared. It was a luxurious and delicious meal that gave me energy in the morning. Thank you for the meal!

Stayed at a ryokan during a package tour. The location is close enough to walk back from Kiyomizu-dera Temple, with a Family Mart nearby. The ryokan is a bit old, including the rooms. It's not a very large building. Stayed in a tatami room with four people. The hot spring is small despite what the brochure says. Dinner was ok, with a variety of dishes. The all-you-can-drink option is 1500 yen for 60 minutes, soft drinks are 600 yen. Breakfast is generous.

It was around the middle of July when I searched various travel sites on Jalan. Jalan is great - they sometimes give exclusive points as gifts. This time, I received 1000 points, so I immediately searched for a place to use them. I found a place called "Shuhoenkaku" located a 5-minute walk from Kiyomizu-Gojo Station in Kyoto. Surprisingly, even though it was during the Obon festival, they had a summer sale on Jalan where I could stay with 1 night and 2 meals included for only 10,000 yen per person (tax included). The reviews were good, the meals looked luxurious, and they offered free private baths, late-night snacks, colorful yukatas, and samue. As a special offer, we could choose between grilled Wagyu beef or a drink during dinner. Plus, the transportation cost within Kyoto city was less than 1000 yen one way! There must be some nice places for daytime drinking within walking distance too. So, I made a reservation right away! Of course, I also used the 1000 points gift for a reservation for two people, totaling 19,000 yen. On the day of the trip, we started with daytime drinking, of course. We got off at Gion-Shijo Station, one stop before Kiyomizu-Gojo Station, and walked a few minutes to "Hyakuren" where we had booked, and also found "Wine Izakaya" for a light lunch and daytime drinks. I will write about these places later. We checked in at Hotel Shuhoenkaku before 3 pm. It was about a 15-minute walk from Kawaramachi. The reason we checked in before 3 pm was that the private bath reservations started on a first-come, first-served basis from 3 pm. We were the second group, and we wanted to use the bath from 4 pm or 5 pm, but there were many people that day, so we ended up with a slot from 3:20 pm to 4 pm. We had to hurry! We went straight to the room, but the washlet was broken - the bidet function didn't work. We immediately contacted the front desk, and they came to check and repair it. While waiting for the repair, we were able to go to the private bath, so it worked out well. The bath was quite warm, so we had to add hot water, but it was nice with a wooden bath and tatami floor. When we returned the key to the private bath, the toilet had been repaired (the bidet was fixed). It was a bit of a hassle, so we immediately went to the nearby convenience store in our slippers to buy canned beer and wine. The staff said it was okay to go out in slippers for that. The room also had an empty fridge, which was very convenient! It could fit about 20 cans of beer. The room also had its own bath, and it was spacious with 12 tatami mats and 4 tatami mats. The view from the window was not great, just a bunch of mixed buildings, but the room itself was nice. We enjoyed evening drinks with canned beer and red wine, and at 6 pm, it was time for dinner. The inn did not offer in-room dining, so we headed to the dining area. There were about 5 table seats in the tatami room, perfect for my friend who didn't like sitting on the floor. Some dishes were already laid out on the table, and we immediately ordered the special drink. However, to our surprise, they said one medium bottle of beer was for two people. If we had known, we would have ordered one Wagyu beef teppanyaki (50g) per person instead. So, I asked if we could change the special offer from a drink to Wagyu beef teppanyaki, and they kindly allowed it. A regular medium bottle of beer was 500 yen (tax included), while the Wagyu beef teppanyaki (50g) was listed on the menu for 1500 yen, so it was definitely a better deal. We ordered the regular medium bottle of beer and toasted. Then, nine dishes were served for us to enjoy various appetizers. Next, a sashimi platter with three kinds of fish was served!

Get off at Gojo Station on the Keihan Main Line and walk east to find the ryokan "Shuhoen". Every year in early summer, my group stays at this inn for a gathering. The inn's biggest feature is its location. It is conveniently located near famous sights such as Kiyomizu Temple, as well as within walking distance of the downtown area of Kyoto from Shijo to Sanjo. Since our purpose is not sightseeing or dining, we don't pay much attention to the food, but it is not bad (rated above 2.5 stars). We enjoyed a delicious dinner set at night. The presentation was very Kyoto-like. The two dessert options were surprisingly tasty. I have never tried it, but the late-night somen noodles are said to be popular. Breakfast is Japanese-style and quite substantial. I usually have bread and salad (or vegetables) for breakfast at home, so I appreciate the variety and amount of food for breakfast. Therefore, the food and taste during the day are rated at 3.5 stars. We stayed in a room for six people. The air from the air conditioner feels a bit stuffy, but it's not unbearable. Additionally, it seems that the hot springs are very nice. By the way, the reviews on Jalan.net and Rakuten Travel are as shown in the links. Just a one-stop walk north from the ryokan, there are many restaurants with ratings around 4 stars on Tabelog, so staying without meals and using this as a base for sightseeing and food exploration might be a good idea.

This time, I would like to introduce the night snack "nyumen" available exclusively for guests at "Shuhoenkan" in Gojo, Kyoto. I stayed there on January 23, 2010. I had been curious about this place since I visited the pottery market before. At the entrance, there is a space where guests can enjoy matcha tea in the evening, and you can choose from three types of sweets. Furthermore, there are two types of hot springs available for unlimited use. I tried the "nyumen" service for the night snack, and it was surprisingly delicious. Eating "nyumen" in Kyoto for the first time, I found the broth to be very light and the seasoning to be refreshing and elegant. You can adjust the taste by adding shichimi or ichimi yourself. I highly recommend this "nyumen" for women. When staying at this ryokan, I recommend trying this "nyumen".

I took a spontaneous trip to Kyoto and booked this inn, which was ranked 2nd on Jalan. I was a bit worried because the other options listed were significantly cheaper, but once I arrived, the excellent service from the front desk staff put my mind at ease. I was quickly seated for a late-night meal, and the carefully prepared dishes were served in a timely manner. The two waitresses were very warm and their explanations of the food were delightful. I used to think that high-quality service came with a high price tag, but I was proven wrong. The breakfast the next morning was also meticulously prepared and it was a great way to start the day. The bath was also very comfortable, and I truly felt that coming to Kyoto was a great decision!! I regret not trying the free Nyumen, but if you ever visit Kyoto, this is definitely an inn worth staying at.

I used this place during my trip to Kyoto. I had a plan to eat dinner outside on a riverside terrace, so I only had late-night snacks and breakfast here. The night soba noodles were different from other hotels in the Kyoritsu Maintenance Group, as they were served in a hot broth. It was light and gentle on the stomach, and very delicious. I wanted to have seconds, but I stopped at just the right amount (lol). It comes in a small bowl, so even at a late hour, I think it's okay for elderly people and women. The breakfast was a traditional Japanese set meal. If I have the chance to visit Kyoto again, I would like to stay here.

After taking a morning walk to Kiyomizu-dera, I returned to Shuhoen and had breakfast. Instead of a buffet style common in hotels these days, I had a set breakfast served in the dining room. It included tofu, salad, miso soup, rice, pickles, and... a wooden rice container? Inside, there were plenty of side dishes, arranged neatly in two tiers! It felt very Kyoto-like to have tofu with so many side dishes. The drinks were self-service, and even natto was self-serve. With so many side dishes, I couldn't help but go for seconds on the rice. It's okay since I took a morning walk, right? After eating well, I'm thinking of exploring Kyoto city today. Thank you for the meal. I wonder if "Other" was the right category for breakfast? As it was part of a travel package, I'm not sure about the individual price of the food. I've heard that this inn offers relatively affordable rates. Foodlog rating: 3.20 (2020/11/07)
