Today, my husband had a day off, so we decided to visit a popular restaurant called Rairin located in Kyoto Ohara, which was featured on the TV show "Kaere Monday". It is known for long queues, with a waiting time of over an hour. I tried to make a reservation in advance, but all the slots were already full! Not wanting to wait for over an hour in this heat, we arrived at 11 am even though the restaurant opens at 11:30 am. There were already 3 groups of customers ahead of us. Since there was no parking available, we parked at a nearby paid parking lot, close to the Ohara Sanzenin Temple, which has plenty of parking spaces. It was about a 3-minute walk from there.
The restaurant opened at 11:30 am, with reserved customers being seated first, followed by first-come, first-served. Inside the restaurant, there were several table seats and one sofa seat, as well as 3-4 terrace seats, which were empty due to the heat. Luckily, my husband and I were seated inside, as the tables were filling up quickly. We narrowly avoided a 1-hour wait. For lunch, they offered an obanzai buffet, featuring small rice balls with various fillings and curry made from vegetables harvested in Ohara. Today's selection included simmered Kamo eggplant, fried Manju chili peppers, burdock salad, potato salad, okra with sesame dressing, chilled cucumbers, konjac, shredded daikon, and bitter gourd salad, among others. Each dish had a gentle flavor that brought out the taste of the ingredients, and the bite-sized rice balls made it easy to try everything.
The highlight for me was the fresh vegetable salad with delicious dressings, including onion and carrot dressing, and celery and apple dressing. I particularly liked the celery and apple dressing, which I ended up buying to take home. There were also many foreign customers at the restaurant. Although I often pass by Ohara, I rarely venture into the interior, so it was nice to discover new places today. The lunch was a bit pricey, but it was definitely worth it, and I look forward to visiting again in the future! Thank you for the meal! I will be back!
