Fugu*°♡ It's winter, isn't it? The restaurant is lovely, with a Kyoto-like entrance. The street outside may be a bit dark, but once you open the entrance a little further back, it's bustling with people having a great time. Gathering at a delicious restaurant with everyone in the cold winter, enjoying a warm meal together is the best feeling. This time, we ordered a course meal. It started with boiled kogori (so tasty!), followed by sashimi, fried dishes, grilled dishes, and finally a delicious soup with zosui. We really enjoyed it. Grilling the fish was a bit tricky, as it stuck to the grill. And using chopsticks to pick up the tofu-like egg sacs in the hot pot was also challenging. It's confusing to eat things we don't usually have, right? Oh, and we also had some fin sake, which really warmed us up. The crispy grilled fin was amazing. We were so happy and full with just the delicious food.

For dinner in Kyoto, I had fugu at the reserved restaurant called Kyonofugu-ya Suetoku in Kiyamachi. Established in 1949, the restaurant is located between the Kamogawa and Takasegawa rivers. As you walk through the charming alley, you will see the noren curtain. I had the course meal which included appetizers, sashimi, hot pot, and porridge. The fugu skin stew was delicious. It was a treat to have it after a long time. We had a private room with a view of the Kamogawa River. You could see the lights of Kiyomizudera Temple. The sashimi with daidai citrus and homemade ponzu sauce was delightful. We also ordered fried fugu, which was freshly cooked and tasty. The hot pot with fugu bones was flavorful. The porridge was made by the staff at the table. The lightly seasoned porridge was perfect. We enjoyed the dessert until the end.

Fugu restaurant located on Kiyamachi Street, near Matsubara. The interior of the restaurant is designed like a traditional Kyoto-style eel bed, with a long layout divided into private tatami rooms on both sides. The staff, dressed in traditional attire and providing excellent service, create a welcoming atmosphere reminiscent of a ryokan (Japanese inn). The fugu dishes were exquisite and I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. I would definitely love to visit this restaurant again!

"Suemaru" in Gojo-Kiya-machi. I visited Suemaru in Gojo-Kiya-machi for a work meeting. It's an old-fashioned high-class fugu (blowfish) restaurant. It had been a while since my last visit, about 4 years ago. The restaurant has counter and tatami seating, but we chose a table for 3 people this time. The layout is well-organized and the landlady's service is polite. It's a great restaurant. While they offer courses, we opted for a la carte this time. We intended to keep it light since it was a business meeting, but we couldn't resist and ended up ordering a lot. We indulged in a fugu feast! We started with thin-sliced fugu sashimi, then enjoyed fugu fin sake, grilled fugu, fugu tempura, and fugu hot pot. Everything was delicious. The fugu tempura here is a personal favorite. The crispy coating and tender meat are delightful. We couldn't resist ordering more fugu fin sake. The grilled fugu with a slightly spicy sauce was also a hit. We even had fugu hot pot with various cuts of fugu. The vegetables soaked in fugu broth were amazingly tasty. We ended the meal with fugu broth-infused rice porridge, a perfect finish to a satisfying feast. In the end, we were stuffed and satisfied. Thank you for the feast!

I have been going to this restaurant since the time of the previous owner. I always have the grilled fugu and tetchiri. The sake is irresistible, delicious, and cheap. Be careful during the warm seasons as they have long holidays. I recommend making a reservation before going. I believe they are closed from May to September.

We visited this restaurant for a party to celebrate our work visit in April. It is located in Kiyamachi. We arrived later than our reserved time and were in a rush due to the shortened hours request, but the staff handled it very well. We had the "●●Suehiro Course" which included grilled shirako, dessert after the meal, simmered fugu, tessa, grilled fugu, karaage, tecchiri, grilled shirako, nabego zosui, and dessert: pudding. The simmered fugu didn't leave much of an impression. The tessa had a good texture and the homemade ponzu sauce was subtle, allowing the flavor of the fugu to shine through. The grilled fugu was lightly seasoned with chili pepper, adding a nice accent. It had a good flavor and umami in a light and refreshing taste. The karaage was seasoned lightly with pepper after frying, and the more you chewed, the more umami came out. The tecchiri was simmered with various vegetables and had a gentle flavor from the homemade ponzu sauce, enhancing the taste of the fugu and vegetables. The grilled shirako had no unpleasant smell, was not too firm nor too soft, and was very delicious. The nabego zosui was made by the landlady who added rice after lifting the pot. It had a gentle and flavorful taste, and surprisingly, it went down easily. The dessert after the meal, pudding, was light and refreshing. Overall, the fugu was delicious and the homemade ponzu sauce complemented it well. The staff, especially the landlady, were very polite, friendly, and made our time there very pleasant. I would like to make time to visit regularly. The price is quite reasonable compared to the famous courses at other restaurants in Gion. It's nice to have a fugu course once in a while.

Located in the quaint streets of Kiyamachi, Suhiro-san serves delicious fugu dishes. The atmosphere is serene, and you can even catch a glimpse of the Kamogawa River during the day. Starting with fugu sashimi, grilled fugu, fried fugu, and porridge, it was a fugu feast! The fried fugu milt was especially delicious. Overall, it was a great dining experience.

This fugu specialty restaurant has solid COVID-19 measures in place. While they used to offer Kyoto cuisine in the past, they now focus exclusively on fugu dishes and are closed during fugu off-season. We opted for a course menu priced around 10,000 yen. The grilled fugu was particularly interesting, and the traditional firm pudding at the end was to our liking. The service was excellent, with staff members showing great hospitality and a high awareness of COVID-19 precautions, making us feel safe. Interestingly, most of the customers that day were young groups, but everyone was dining in private rooms, which was reassuring. The menu included: simmered fugu, thin-sliced fugu sashimi, grilled fugu (with thick cuts and a unique eating style), hot pot, porridge, and pudding. We also had fugu fin sake, sake for toasting, and beer.

I visited at night. Established in 1949, the long-established restaurant "Suehiro" stands along Kiyamachi Street by the Takase River. This restaurant offers fugu dishes in private tatami rooms. It is located facing the Kamo River between the Kamo River and the Takase River, and the entrance is tucked away from Kiyamachi Street, so you have to follow a narrow private alley. Although there is a quaint "roji" alley often seen in Kyoto, I somehow forgot to take a photo of the exterior. What a shame. Despite being a long-established restaurant in a somewhat hidden location, they had a menu displayed on the street, and the fugu course was reasonably priced, so I decided to visit on a whim. In modern times, you can check the budget and reviews online even for unfamiliar restaurants on-site, which is a great convenience. I am grateful to the predecessors who left records. I had the Pine Course for 6,700 yen including tax. It's common for prices not to be in the order of pine, bamboo, plum. However, the menu was also not arranged in price order, which was a bit tricky. Among them, I chose a traditional course that included tessa and tecchiri. - Fugu skin boiled in kogori - Tessa - Tecchiri - Zosui (rice porridge) - Dessert The homemade ponzu sauce made with daidai citrus brought out the fresh taste of the fugu even more. The tofu in the tecchiri was smooth and firm, allowing the soybean flavor to shine through. I was impressed by the excellent tofu in Kyoto. Afterward, I found a review praising the grilled fugu, which made me slightly regret missing out on it. There seem to be many regular customers, but as first-time tourists, we were warmly welcomed and able to relax without feeling out of place. Thank you for the wonderful meal.

I had fugu for the first time this year. I had the Matsusaka course, which was a good deal, but I recommend the Take course. The tessa was delicious, the grilled shirako was cooked perfectly, and I had a great time sitting at the counter!

Today's shop is Suehiro, a long-established fugu restaurant with over 60 years of history on Kiyamachi Street, a 7-minute walk from Kiyomizu Gojo. I have introduced this restaurant on my blog before, but this time, I had the honor of attending the renovation party where some parts of the interior were renovated! (By the way, I am not affiliated with the restaurant staff, so no worries, haha). The entrance is also looking beautiful! ○New, but still classy with the walls looking neat! The walls have been beautifully redone! The "classy" feel of over 60 years is still intact! This time, they have added two more table seats! Safe for those with knee or back issues! ○The Fugu Course is still delicious as ever! I had the "Suehiro Course" for 10,000 yen! Appetizer, tessa, karaage, grilled fugu, tetchiri, zosui! The taste is as amazing as before! Appetizer The appetizer is simmered kogori (a type of fish) - elegant umami taste! The chewy texture of the simmered kogori with the crunchy texture of the octopus inside is great! Tessa Fresh tessa is a luxurious treat to enjoy with the special ponzu sauce! It's refreshing and delicious! Karaage The fugu karaage is incredibly juicy!! It's full of flavor! Grilled Fugu And the highlight of this meal is the grilled fugu! Grilled just right, with a quick sear on both sides, the tender texture remains intact, and the amazing aroma spreads in your mouth! Tetchiri Then there's the classic tetchiri! Filled with fugu meat, it's rich and flavorful! Waiting for it to cook, then adding the gentle homemade ponzu sauce made from hand-squeezed oranges enhances the flavor of the fugu even more! The vegetables also soak up the fugu broth well! Zosui Lastly, zosui made with the flavorful soup from tetchiri! Made by the staff, it's a gentle and delicious taste that goes down smoothly even after all that food! I also had the fin sake for 750 yen! After eating fugu, you'll want to drink fin sake too! So I had it! The moment you open the lid, the wonderful aroma... it's irresistible! I ended up getting a bit tipsy! Thanks to the delicious fugu, I felt happy and satisfied! Thank you for the meal! I felt like eating fugu, so I visited Suehiro in Matsubara, Kiyamachi. I made a reservation for the private room with a view of the Kamo River, and ordered the Suehiro course along with a separate order of shirako sashimi. I also had sweet potato shochu and soba shochu. The appetizer was a flavorful and chewy simmered kogori that made me want seconds. The tessa was thinly sliced and served with special ponzu sauce. The grilled fugu was lightly seared and had a juicy and delicious texture. Even though I was already full from the tetchiri, the zosui was light and I ended up eating two bowls. Fugu is known for being light, but this meal was very satisfying. The only thing I forgot was to drink the fin sake ^_^; I'll remember next time. Despite the intimidating exterior, the restaurant has a cozy atmosphere once you're inside. Give it a try!

This was my first fugu meal in years. I had a full course meal with fugu dishes such as tessa, karaage, grilled fugu, tecchiri, and zosui. The tessa was delicious as expected, but the fugu karaage was surprisingly light and crispy, making it easy to eat. The grilled fugu was advised to be cooked until the meat turned white, and it was just as tasty as the tessa. The zosui served after the tecchiri was not made by adding rice to the remaining broth, but prepared separately. Everything was delicious and I left the restaurant feeling satisfied.

"Suemaru" is one of the few fugu specialty restaurants in Kyoto. Located on the famous Kiyamachi Street, this renowned restaurant offers a relaxed and tranquil atmosphere where you can enjoy fugu dishes at your own pace. Whether you're dining with a group or solo, you can savor a variety of fugu dishes, including hot pot and porridge to finish off your meal. The courses include several small dishes before the hot pot and porridge, while the a la carte menu offers a wide selection of fugu dishes such as simmered fugu and fugu hot pot, perfect for enjoying with drinks. It's a restaurant that you'll want to visit at least once every season.

I was treated to fugu! It was my first time this winter. The entrance is a bit hard to find, located quite far south on Kiyamachi Street from Shijo. The restaurant is long and narrow, with small tatami rooms extending deep inside. Both the tessa and grilled fugu were delicious! There was quite a lot of grilled fugu (I was very satisfied with the generous portion), maybe it was three servings? The creamy texture of the shirako was rich and satisfying. I enjoyed a fugu meal after a long time.
